Intrductin Mnitring Business Critical Applicatins with This dcument describes hw t use VMware vcenter Operatins Manager t mnitr the perfrmance f SAP, Micrsft Exchange, Micrsft SQL Server databases, and Oracle databases in a VMware virtual envirnment. VMware categrizes these sftware prducts as business critical applicatins (BCAs). SAP and Exchange are direct applicatins, whereas SQL Server and Oracle databases are cmmnly used as backend persistent data strage fr packaged and custm business critical applicatins. vcenter Operatins Manager prvides a unified view int the health, risk, and efficiency f the virtual infrastructure and the health f applicatins t help imprve quality f service and prvide early detectin f perfrmance, capacity, and cnfiguratin issues. Visibility int business critical applicatins is pssible using ff-the-shelf adapters fr SAP, Exchange, SQL Server, Oracle, and VMware vfabric Hyperic. vfabric Hyperic is an agent-based perfrmance management slutin that can extract cunters frm the guest perating system and applicatins r databases. This dcument fcuses n these adapters and shws hw they can be used t extract and mnitr applicatin perfrmance cunters and metrics that are relevant fr SAP, Exchange, Oracle, r SQL Server database administratrs. While many ther applicatins and sftware prducts fall within the business critical applicatins classificatin (many f which can als be mnitred with vcenter Operatins Manager and vfabric Hyperic), the scpe f this dcument is based n the sftware prducts described in this sectin. 1.1 Purpse In physical envirnments, applicatin administratrs (defined in this dcument as SAP, Exchange, SQL Server database, and Oracle database administratrs) traditinally rely n perating system level cunters t mnitr the infrastructure. This is n lnger adequate in the VMware virtual envirnment where visibility requires access t the VMware vsphere layer. vcenter Operatins Manager prvides single-pane visibility int the entire stack frm the applicatin level t the guest perating system and underlying virtual layer. The cntent in this dcument is intended t prvide guidance t administratrs. It des nt present strict design requirements, because enterprise requirements can vary frm ne implementatin t anther. 1.2 Target Audience This dcument is intended fr SAP, Exchange, SQL Server, Oracle, and VMware administratrs respnsible fr managing the peratins f business critical sftware applicatins n the vsphere platfrm. Overview Mnitring Business Critical Applicatins with The fllwing sectins describe the wrkings f vcenter Operatins Manager and vfabric Hyperic, and hw t use them as part f yur mnitring strategy. 2.1 vcenter Operatins Manager vcenter Operatins Manager ships as a virtual appliance that can be quickly installed and used t manage the perfrmance and health f the vsphere infrastructure. vcenter Operatins Manager includes the fllwing functinality: Operatins Dashbard prvides at-a-glance views int health, risk, and efficiency f the virtual infrastructure. Health and Wrklad Views helps identify anmalies, faults, and stressed wrklads that can impact the infrastructure perfrmance and health. Wrklad Details View prvides in-depth analysis f the causes f perfrmance and health issues n virtual machines, hsts, data stres, and vsphere clusters. Adapters prvide visibility int ther applicatin prducts. vcenter Operatins Manager uses adapters t cllect data frm a variety f data surces, including thirdparty prducts such as business critical applicatins. Adapters wrk with the vcenter Operatins Manager Cllectr t cllect and prcess data. The Cllectr acts as a gateway between vcenter Operatins Manager and its adapters. Depending n the data surce and the adapter implementatin, an adapter might cllect data by making API calls, using a cmmand-line interface, r sending database queries. The fllwing adapters are cvered in this dcument: vfabric Hyperic adapter Cllects data frm vfabric Hyperic, which includes plug-ins t mnitr many applicatins. Micrsft System Center Operatins Manager (SCOM) adapter Cllects resurce metrics, resurce availability, and resurce relatinship data frm Micrsft SCOM databases. Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) adapter Cllects data frm Oracle Enterprise Manager database management tables. SQL Lader adapter Reads data frm an external database. Perfrmance Analytics Receives data gathered frm mnitred resurces, analyzes the data, and creates statistical mdels t detect abnrmal behavir. File System Database (FDBS) Stres all f the metrics. Custm dashbards are created using this user interface. Administratin UI Prvides a user interface fr maintenance and management tasks. Capacity Analytics Prvides capacity metering and trending and ability t right-size and ptimize resurces. 2.2 vfabric Hyperic vfabric Hyperic mnitrs the applicatin infrastructure fr custm web applicatins and databases acrss physical r virtual infrastructure envirnments. It includes ut-f-the-bx mnitring f databases applicatins and guest perating systems (bth Windws and Linux based). The main cmpnents f vfabric Hyperic include vfabric Hyperic Server, Agent, Database, and the vfabric Hyperic User Interface, als knwn as the vfabric Hyperic Prtal. A vfabric Hyperic Agent runs n the guest perating system f each virtual machine that needs t be mnitred. The vfabric Hyperic Agent autmatically discvers the resurces and sftware in the virtual machine such as architecture, guest OS, RAM, CPU speed, IP address, and dmain name. The agent uses resurce plug-ins t discver sftware prducts such as Java-based applicatin servers, web servers, and database servers. Agents send the inventry and perfrmance data t a central vfabric Hyperic Server which stres it in the vfabric Hyperic database. A vcenter Operatins Manager vfabric Hyperic adapter runs SQL queries and uses standard JDBC access t retrieve data frm the vfabric Hyperic database. This adapter cllects metrics frm vfabric Hyperic and creates vcenter Operatins Manager resurce bjects dynamically accrding t platfrm types and server types in vfabric Hyperic. 2.3 Determine Mnitring Strategy This sectin cmpares the metric data available frm vfabric Hyperic and the ther BCA data surces thrugh vcenter Operatins Manager adapters. The ther BCA adapters prvide additinal cunters that applicatin administratrs can use fr in-depth analysis f the applicatin tiers. SCOM is typically used nly in Windws envirnments where vfabric Hyperic can be deplyed acrss many varieties f guest OS. vfabric Hyperic autmatically discvers the applicatins in the guest OS and can mnitr applicatinspecific metrics with minimal assistance f an applicatin administratr t help with setup and cnfiguratin. It des require an agent installatin in each virtual machine. The ther adapters (SCOM, SQL Lader, Oracle and SAP) require mre invlvement frm an applicatin administratr fr crrect peratin. vfabric Hyperic and SCOM can prvide access t all guest OS cunters. The remaining BCA adapters als extract guest OS metrics, but nt the cmplete set. A key capability f vcenter Operatins Manager is t highlight perfrmance issues and aid in perfrmance trubleshting. It can be the starting pint fr an investigatin and can guide the analysis twards the crrect layer and specific cmpnent in the applicatin stack. 15 3.1 vcenter Operatins Manager Setup Mnitring Business Critical Applicatins with vcenter Operatins Manager is distributed as a vapp. Installatin prcedures are described in the vapp Deplyment and Cnfiguratin Guide ( ) The adapters fr the examples in this dcument were installed and cnfigured as described in the Adapter Guide ( 3.2 vfabric Hyperic Setup vfabric Hyperic Server is available as a vapp. The vfabric Hyperic vapp cnsists f tw virtual machines, ne fr the vfabric Hyperic Server and ne fr the vfabric Hyperic database. The database is vfabric Pstgres The vfabric Hyperic vapp was deplyed as described in Install Hyperic vapp ( ic_vapp.html). vfabric Hyperic agents were installed in each virtual machine running a business critical applicatin. vfabric Hyperic autmatically discvers the applicatins fr which it has a plug-in and the guest OS inside the virtual machines. The fllwing figure shws the discvered virtual machines. All f the discvered applicatins are cllected by the vcenter Operatins Manager vfabric Hyperic Adapter and created as resurces in vcenter Operatins Manager. 16 3.3 System Center Operatins Manager Setup Mnitring Business Critical Applicatins with System Center Operatins Manager 2012 (SCOM) was installed and cnfigured accrding t Micrsft installatin guidelines. 3.4 Resurces and Overview f Installed Adapters A resurce is any entity in the envirnment fr which vcenter Operatins Manager can cllect data, such as a virtual machine, database, applicatin server, r a cntainer that hlds ther resurces. Installatin f a BCA adapter creates a resurce kind (type r classificatin). The adapter resurce kind is used t create a resurce that is assciated with r pints t a specific data surce such as an SAP system r database instance. The resurce enables access t the specific cunters and can be manually cnfigured r autmatically created by the adapter. The installatin f multiple adapters generates multiple resurce kinds within vcenter Operatins Manager as described in the fllwing table. Table 3. 19 3.5 Review Metrics Dashbard Mnitring Business Critical Applicatins with This sectin describes a dashbard that can be used as a quick methd t navigate t a resurce and view the assciated metrics. T create a dashbard, lg in t the custm user interface in a web brwser. The tabs near the tp f the Hme page shw yur dashbards. This sectin describes perfrmance management using vcenter Operatins Manager fr Exchange Server The examples in this sectin invlve an Exchange 2010 envirnment that was deplyed as shwn in the fllwing figure. The blue line is the actual memry utilizatin fr that metric cllectin interval. The yellw regin shws the metric is currently running utside its dynamic threshld. The mnitring prvided by this management pack includes availability and cnfiguratin mnitring, perfrmance data cllectin, and default threshlds. SQL Lader adapter This adapter uses select statements in SQL query files t retrieve data frm surce database tables. Micrsft has created Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) that cntain all the SQL server perfrmance metrics. The SQL Lader adapter can be used t query data frm the DMVs. An example is shwn in Appendix A: SQL Lader Adapter Cnfiguratin. Adapter fr vfabric Hyperic - SQL Server Plug-in vfabric Hyperic has a SQL Server plug-in that discvers and mnitrs SQL Server database metrics. SAP wrklads can be I/O intensive s this is a useful metric t bserve. Merging the SAP and vsphere cunters in the same dashbard allws bservatin f hw a pssible I/O bttleneck that drives up the I/O latency values can affect the database respnse time as measured by SAP.
