OUTREACH INITIATIVES: The following outreach initiatives were completed by the SEU during the reporting period: A. Events Sponsored by Educational Institutions Related to Broadcasting Career Opportunities: 1. September 1, 214 College Student Tour. Fifteen seniors from colleges around the country were received. They were part of the Contemporary Music Center which is a training center for the best and brightest music major students nationwide. Students were given a tour of the radio station studios and offices. Following the tour they met with the station s PD and an AE/concert promoter for 2 hours. Topics discussed were: Overview of the radio industry, Programming/selection of songs, Career in radio/broadcasting, Becoming an intern/the station s internship program. 2. October 3, 214 Career Day at Brown s Chapel Elementary. Station s two Morning Show hosts spoke to a group of 4 th and 5 th graders for two hours regarding radio and careers in broadcasting. 5 3. March 3 & 9, 215 Homeschool Tour. A radio station and studio tour was given to a group of approximately 15 students and parents (per visit) from the HSC Homeschooling Together co-op. Students ranged in grade from kindergarten to high school. The goal was to inform them on how a radio station works, as well as provide them with information about broadcasting as a career. Tour included conversations with radio personalities and seeing a live broadcast. 4. March 9-13, 215 Job Shadow. A high school student from Franklin Road Academy job shadowed one of the Morning Show hosts. The student sat in during the Morning Show program all week, followed by one-on-one time with the Morning Show host. The student learned about radio, jobs of the on-air personalities, off-air responsibilities of the on-air personalities, and various aspects of broadcasting. B. Hosting a Job Fair: 1. The SEU hosted the New Year! New Career! Job Fair and Luncheon at The Tennessee Christian Chamber of Commerce on January 27, 215. The event featured New York Times Bestselling Author Karen Kingsbury as the guest speaker. The job fair and luncheon had over 14 participants. The SEU s local HR rep was on hand to distribute flyers on current job openings, talk to and recruit potential candidates. D. Job Banks: The SEU participated in job banks and internet programs designed to provide general information about opportunities in broadcasting and to encourage women and minorities to consider future employment. In addition, all job openings have been posted on websites to ensure broad internet recruitment. 6 E. EEO Training to Management-level Personnel: 1. The Salem Media Group Human Resources Director conducts monthly HR Network Training sessions via teleconference and powerpoint presentations, which includes review of EEO policies and compliance. The SEU s Human Resources Manager and Assistant participate in these training sessions each month and then routinely communicate with the SEU s General Manager and other management team members to keep all employees apprised of the company and SEU s policy on equal opportunity employment. 2. The SEU participates in an on-line program entitled Employment Law Training (E.L.T.), which is an ongoing program for all entry level managers and above to train them in methods of ensuring equal opportunity and preventing discrimination. Training modules include two (2) hours of Preventing Workplace Harassment and a module covering all forms of anti-discrimination. During this reporting period (in May 214), nine (9) SEU employees participated in the ELT program. F. Additional Activities: 1. April 4, 214 Adult Tour. Fifteen adults part of an independent artist retreat in Nashville visited and toured the radio station. Questions were asked and answered regarding broadcasting, radio programming and the music industry in general. 2. June 13, 214 Christian Business Leaders Roundtable Event. The station s Director of Promotions and Community Outreach spoke to a group of 5 business leaders for their annual Roundtable event. It was a Q & A session, and broadcast opportunities were touched upon. 3. September 18, 214 Christian Women in Media Event. The station s PD and an AE spoke to a group of approximately 3 professional working women. PD spoke on the ministry and business of our EU and the AE talked about sales and radio advertising. 4. January 19, Cub Scout Tour. Tour of radio studios was given to a group of 12 cub scouts and parents. The goal was to inform them on how a radio station works. Tour included conversations with radio personalities and other employees. Group was able to sit in on a live broadcast and commercial production. 5. March 23, Cub Scout Tour. Station s Morning Show host led a radio station tour for 4 cub scouts and 1 parent. They talked about various aspects of radio, recorded voice overs, and observed live onair broadcasting.
