The College has up-todate industry standard salons. You will work with real clients in the Colleges professional salons that are open to the public, giving you valuable practical and realistic working experience. This, plus essential external work placements will develop and prepare you for employment within the industry. Hairdressing Are you creative and do you enjoy working with people? Hairdressing offers you the opportunity to become employed locally or further afield in a career that is fast-moving and everchanging. You will gain work experience in both the College and hairdressing salons, compete in local and regional competitions, and visit trade exhibitions such as Salon International. Beauty Therapy Are you interested in a career that is exciting, flexible and can offer you worldwide opportunities? Our beauty therapy courses offer you the first steps to achieving a career in this rapidly growing sector. You will gain work experience in the College and have the opportunity to work in local beauty salons, as well as visit trade exhibitions such as Professional Beauty. 3
3 Career Prospects Hairdressing Beauty Therapy Functional Skills If you enjoy hairstyling and like meeting different people, this could be the perfect job for you. Hairdressers cut, colour and shape clients hair to create the look they want. To become a hairdresser you will need to have excellent customer service and people skills, and a willingness to learn new techniques and methods. You will need to be creative and have an awareness of fashion. A beauty therapist is all about making people feel good and look their best. Beauty therapists carry out face and body treatments for clients to help them look a feel better. They need to be a good listener, be open and friendly, and make their clients feel relaxed. To start work as a fully qualified beauty therapist you need a relevant Level 3 NVQ/VRQ qualification. You will study Functional Skills in addition to your subject area studies. These are the skills that are commonly needed for success in a range of activities in education and training, work and life in general: Maths English ICT Please visit our online course finder for the most up-to-date course details: Students who have qualified at Weymouth College have secured employment in local salons such as Designer s Edge Bridport and The Edge Dorchester. Students who completed this course have found employment with Steiner cruise liners, Embrace Beauty Salon, House of Health Beauty, Pure, Bliss, Breeze, Flawless Wellbeing Centre and Jessell s. Some of our students have gone on to open their own business or have chosen to work in health and fitness centres, cruise liners, health farms or hotel salons. 4 5
4 Hair & Beauty Salon Level 1 Introduction to the Hair & Beauty Sector Weymouth College operates its own professional hair and beauty salon where students gain experience in a realistic, professional working environment. You will carry out a full consultation before every service and only professional products are used. There are a wide selection of hair and beauty therapies are available to students and members of the public at low prices, offering great value for money. Full details of the salon services can be found on the College website If you are interested in hair and beauty this course will give you the opportunity to learn the fundamental principles of this exciting industry. Level 1 certificate in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector (industry-related vocational ) Awards/certificate in personal and social development You will be assessed throughout the course using: Appraisal of practical ability Written tests Portfolio work Industry research and career progression. Selection is by interview. To prepare, you should research the industry. You must have a minimum of 2 GCSEs including English and science at minimum grade D or equivalent. You will be required to pass an initial diagnostic test before the course starts. You must complete a summer holiday project, which will be given out before the start of the course. journals. Specific books will be advised nearer the time of study. You should set aside approximately 250 for equipment including books, correct footwear and uniform. You will also need to supply materials including tissues, cotton wool pads and cotton buds. With this qualification you may enter employment at trainee level or progress on to further education by choosing your preferred specialism in hair or beauty at Level
5 Level 2 Beauty Therapy Diploma Level 2 Women s Hairdressing Diploma This course provides an excellent introduction to the beauty industry. You will need to be prepared for the high standards required to work in this field, taking professional qualifications as well as covering the theoretical work required to become a professional beauty therapist. You will gain work experience in both the College and local beauty salons, and visit trade exhibitions such as Professional Beauty. You will study the following: Health and safety in the salon Working in beauty related industry Client care and communication in the beauty industry Provide facial skincare Promote products and services Remove hair using waxing products Provide manicure and pedicure treatments Apply make-up Provide eyelash and brow treatments Salon reception duties Head massage Facial care for men. You will be continually assessed throughout the course using: Appraisal of practical competence Oral assessment Written tests/online tests Portfolio work Assignments Selection is by interview. You should complete research on the anatomy and physiology requirements of the course. You must have a minimum of 2 GCSEs including English and science at minimum grade C or equivalent. You will be required to pass an initial diagnostic test before the course starts. You must complete a summer project, which is given out prior to the start of the course. journals. Specific books will be advised nearer the time of study. You should set aside approximately 300 for equipment including books, correct footwear and uniform. You will also need to supply materials including tissues, cotton wool pads, cotton buds and spatulas. On completion of this course you could gain employment in a beauty salon or progress to the Level 3 course which is recommended to advance your skills and widen your career opportunities. Students studying on this course will work as a hairdresser in the College salon, which is open to the public and be expected to work in a selected salon in the area for a variety of work experience. Participation in local and regional competitions is highly recommended, and a visit to the Salon International exhibition will be expected. Working in the hair industry Health and safety Client consultation Shampoo and condition hair and scalp Promote products and services to clients Cut women s hair Colour and lighten hair Perm and neutralise hair The art of dressing hair Salon reception duties Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector You will cover the theoretical and practical work necessary for each unit; this will be tested through online testing with the awarding body and practical assessment. is continuous throughout the year and will take place within a realistic working environment and assignments. Selection is by interview. A minimum of GCSE grade C is required in English and science, but maths would be an advantage. All applicants will be required to pass an initial diagnostic test. 6 Level 3 Hairdressing Diploma Students studying this course will work as a hairdresser in the College salon, which is open to the public, and also have the opportunity to work in a selected salon in the area for a variety of work experience. Participation in local and regional competitions is highly recommended and trips to the Salon International exhibition will be expected. 7 Level 3 Beauty Therapy Diploma You will be prepared for the high standards required to work in this industry, taking professional qualifications, as well as covering the theoretical work required to become a professional beauty therapist. You will gain work experience in both the College and local beauty salons, and visit trade exhibitions such as Professional Beauty. You will study the following units: Monitor procedures to safely control work operations Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities Provide electrical epilation treatments Provide body massage treatments Provide body electrical treatments Provide facial electrical treatments Carry out massage using pre-blended aromatherpy oil Provide tanning services. Selection is by interview. You must have NVQ Level 2 in Beauty Therapy. You must be able to demonstrate your ability to be successful in the theoretical and practical parts of the course, which may include completing a trade test. You will be required to pass an initial diagnostic test before the course starts. You are encouraged to work in industry to enable you to remain competent with Level 2 skills. You will be continually assessed throughout the course using: Appraisal of practical competence Oral assessment Written tests Portfolio work Assignments. journals. Specific books will be advised nearer the time of study. You should set aside approximately 150 for equipment plus correct footwear and uniform. You will also need to supply materials including tissues, cotton wool pads, cotton buds and spatulas. Additonal training in beauty or management can lead to opportunities in specialists salons or as industry consultants
8 Hairdressing Apprenticeships Course Information If you are already employed or wish to train on the job, an Apprenticeship will allow you to get qualified, get paid and get a career all in one go! You will need to be able to demonstrate that you have the potential, motivation and commitment needed to gain the high quality skills demanded by business and industry. Although you do not need any formal qualifications to start an Apprenticeship, do not be fooled into thinking they are the easy option; the can be demanding, but also very rewarding. The College has up-to-date industry standard salons, which allows you the opportunity to work with real clients, giving you valuable realistic working experience to prepare you for work or further study. You will have the opportunity to go on off-site visits to the Salon International at Excel, other trade and hair shows, and external workshops. You will also be able to participate in College competitions and photographic sessions. There will be an equipment cost of approximately 250 for any kit you require, including uniform and text books. Intermediate Apprenticeship 2 Year Programme with 1 day a week at college Diploma in Hairdressing Level 2 (NVQ) (QCF): G20 Health and Safety G17 Good Customer Service G7 Client Consultation GH8 Shampoo and Condition Hair and Scalp GH9 Change Hair Colour GH10 Style Hair GH11 Set and Dress Hair GH12 Cut Hair. Optional units include: GH14 Perming and Neutralising G18 Promoting Services and Products G4 Salon Reception Functional Skills maths and English Level 1 Employer rights and responsibilities. Career prospects Graduate stylist or you could begin training to become a colour technician. Advanced Apprenticeship 1 Year Programme with 1 day a week at college Diploma in Hairdressing Level 3 (NVQ) (QCF) Functional Skills maths and English Level 2 Employer rights and responsibilities Career prospects Hair stylist for film and stage Working on a cruise ship A role in salon management Progress to a higher education course to study to become a session artist Fees If you are aged as of 31 August on the year of enrolment no course fee. If you are over 19 as of 31 August and enrolling on a full-time of study a tuition fee will be applicable in most cases. Bursary funds There are financial support arrangements for year olds and hardship funds available for the over 19s.
