4 BA Business & Management This degree programme provides you with a strong grounding across the main areas of business and explores key themes and emerging challenges facing business in a global context. It is designed to prepare graduates for responsible, professional roles in both the public and private sectors. About the programme The programme focuses on the business environment including cultural context, markets, legal, financial and ethical constraints under which firms operate and their strategy, marketing and entrepreneurial direction. It also covers the internal aspects of the firm such as human resources, organisational behaviour and culture, operations, finance and accounting, ethics, management and IT. In the first year you will study modules in marketing and strategy, organisational behaviour, accounting and statistics, together with choices from law, economics and enterprise. In the second year modules include marketing management, international business strategy and accounting, with some modules involving experts from industry to share their expertise and experience. The School s Centre for Entrepreneurship also offers modules in enterprise and entrepreneurship, giving you the chance to take part in business planning exercises and a competition to develop and potentially even launch your own small business. In the third year you can choose to undertake a paid one-year work placement that will significantly enhance your CV and future graduate employment prospects, help you to build a professional network and provide a valuable opportunity to apply and further develop your knowledge and skills. In the final year there are no compulsory modules; instead you will examine areas already studied at a more advanced level. You will select from a wide of range of optional modules, allowing you to tailor your degree towards your own needs, interests and aims. Our graduates typically enter a wide range of careers including banking and finance, consultancy, management, accountancy, the Civil Service, sales and marketing, retailing and other service industries. In some cases successful placements lead to the offer of a permanent role within the same organisation upon graduation. 5 BA Entrepreneurship This programme equips you with the tools you need to start a new business or to fulfil key roles in other enterprises. It includes the main areas of management but primarily aims to develop your entrepreneurial skill set, notably in the areas of opportunity identification and in understanding the entrepreneurial process. The programme prepares you for the challenges of establishing your own business, and encourages you to create your own business during the final year. About the programme BA Entrepreneurship will enhance your academic and personal transferable skills. You will have the opportunity to develop and refine your communication skills, numeracy, self-management, problemsolving abilities, and will be encouraged to further develop and enhance these skills through a variety of opportunities available outside the curriculum. This programme provides you with an understanding of the language of business, as well as a thorough grounding in entrepreneurialism, accounting, enterprise, marketing, innovation and finance. The majority of students taking this programme will go on to create their own business; it gives you the opportunity to enter the career of your choice. The solid foundation in management will also put you in an excellent position if you choose to enter employment in other businesses. 6 BA Entrepreneurship & Management The BA Entrepreneurship and Management programme prepares you for the challenges of becoming a successful entrepreneur, equipping you with the tools required to start new businesses or fulfil key roles in other enterprises. It includes the main areas of management, establishing an understanding of the internal and external environment of the firm, but also aims to develop your entrepreneurial skill set, notably in opportunity identification and in understanding the entrepreneurial process. The programme teaches you how to establish your own business, and prepares you for professional leadership and managerial roles in the commercial or public sector. Graduates will be well qualified to develop a professional career in entrepreneurship, business or management. 8 BA International Management & Business Administration with French/German/Italian/Spanish These programmes provide a degree-level education in international management and business administration, with a significant emphasis on the relevant country s culture and a high level of understanding of the written and spoken language that you choose. The programmes are distinctive in their international business and culture aspects. At the same time they provide a good understanding of a range of key functional aspects of business. About the programmes These internationally focused programmes examine the key themes and emerging challenges facing business in a global context. You will examine the internal and external factors that impact on business performance and drive strategic decision making in any organisation. Progressive business focused modules span areas including marketing, accounting, finance, organisational behaviour and human resource management. You will also develop a high level of understanding of your chosen language both spoken and written and gain an awareness of the relevant country s culture and practices. A study year abroad or a one-year paid work placement in year three provides you with an outstanding opportunity to both apply and further develop your business related knowledge and skills, as well as your language capabilities. The final year builds on the professional and practical knowledge and skills you will have acquired and a range of optional modules allow you to tailor your degree towards your own interests and aims. In an increasingly globalised business world, multilingual employees are highly sought-after. Graduates will find themselves more career-mobile and better prepared to work in a multinational environment, and possess language and communication skills that will differentiate them from the majority of professionals. 9 BSc International Business & Finance This is an innovative programme based in expanding fields, bringing together international business and finance, taught within the Henley Business School and drawing in particular from international business and finance specialisms. It is a unique undergraduate degree in the UK with a thorough and balanced curriculum with regard to both disciplines. The study of international business and finance progresses through the programme so that you obtain a critical grasp of core theory along with thorough knowledge of application and analysis. About the programme The BSc in International Business & Finance is a multidisciplinary undergraduate degree that provides an in-depth understanding of the interrelationships between the areas of finance and the global economy. One of the hallmarks of globalisation is the growing significance of multinational firms that span multiple countries and industries, and the consequent need to manage business operations in this increasingly complex environment. This programme equips you with the knowledge to understand these changes and use this information to effectively progress your career. This programme examines issues from both a business and economic perspective. You will enhance your skills in communications, information handling, and analysis of context and cases in development. BSc International Business & Finance prepares you for a wide range of roles, primarily within banking and financial organisations worldwide. 10 BSc Management with Information Technology This degree programme combines a strong grounding in the functional areas of business with a specialist focus on IT. It prepares you for responsible and professional managerial roles in the IT sector, as well as in other areas. About the programme The programme explores the key themes and emerging challenges facing business in a global context. You will gain an understanding of both business and IT operations and develop the ability to design and develop IT applications, as well as effectively evaluate IT-specific needs within an organisation. You will focus closely on areas ranging from strategy, human resource management and organisational behaviour to e-business, software engineering and databases. You will also develop your knowledge of accounting, marketing and ethics. In the third year you will undertake a paid one-year work placement that will significantly enhance your CV and future graduate employment prospects, help you to build a professional network and provide a valuable opportunity to apply and further develop your knowledge and skills. In some cases a successful placement may lead to the offer of a permanent role within the same organisation upon graduation. In the fourth and final year there are no core modules. You will instead examine areas already studied at a more advanced level and select from a wide range of optional modules, allowing you to tailor your degree towards your own needs and aims. This programme is strongly industry oriented and can provide an excellent platform from which to launch a successful career in the IT sector as well as information intensive organisations. 11 How to apply Competition for places on our undergraduate degree programmes is strong, so we advise that you apply as early as possible. If you have any questions at any stage of your application, please don t hesitate to contact us. UCAS All applications, whether you are from the UK, EU or overseas, should be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Please apply online using the University of Reading s UCAS code, READG R12. You should aim to submit your completed application between 1 September and 15 January for admission in October of that year. We don t normally interview individual applicants, so please ensure that your UCAS application features appropriate information highlighting your academic and extracurricular achievements. A strong personal statement is also essential. This should demonstrate an informed interest in the degree programme you have applied for, explain why you have chosen a particular programme, provide examples of your past achievements and reflect on how you will use and further develop your knowledge and skills throughout your time at university. International students Henley Business School is home to a diverse and inclusive international community. Academic entry requirements Entry requirements vary depending on your chosen degree programme but generally you are expected to achieve grades AAB from 3 A Levels (excluding General Studies and Key Skills).
