3 We offer a range of programmes, including HNCs, HNDs, Degrees and BA Honours Degrees, for those interested in studying a higher qualification in sport, health and social care, and counselling. With vocationally specific content, the courses are designed to provide students with the relevant employability skills for their chosen career. Many can be studied either full-time or part-time and some are delivered across two days, allowing for the opportunity to work alongside the course. Students will benefit from high quality teaching, bringing together experience and expertise from the private and public sectors. Sport lecturers have extensive knowledge in coaching sport to elite level, while staff teaching the BCAP accredited counselling degree programme are actively involved in the academic and clinical aspects of the field. Within health and care, there are particularly strong links with service providers and professional organisations within the sector. There are excellent facilities for sport, including well-equipped fitness suites and a large, multi-purpose sports hall that has hosted international basketball matches. 4 Diploma of Higher Education Person-Centred Counselling This course focuses on person-centred theory and practice, it has taught elements, seminars, tutorial and personal development groups. The use of role play is a significant part of the programme. Students will work with clients under supervision and deepen their grasp of theory and practice. Different therapeutic modalities are studied and commonalities, as well as significant differences, explicated and critiqued. Validated by Who is this course for? This course is for individuals with an interest in mental health, the human condition and a willingness to work with others in times of significant distress. Applicants must be able to demonstrate capacity for self-awareness, maturity and stability and be able to cope with the emotional demands of the course. description The course will involve a comprehensive study of Carl Rogers theory and practice contextualised in a range of key paradigms. Students have the opportunity to work with clients through the counselling service with clinical supervision provided. The course is also validated by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and will enable students to apply for accreditation after further work with clients. This course is made up of two levels: The Certificate in Higher Education which is studied in year one, and the Diploma which is studied in year two. College-based learning makes up much of the programme and, in addition, clinical work and supervision are arranged on an individual basis, and take place on a non- College day. This programme is delivered through classroom based activity, guided assignment work, seminars, workshops, experiential and client work. 5 BA (Hons) in Counselling Studies This is professional training in humanistic, person-centred counselling/psychotherapy. Who is this course for? This course is for individuals with an interest in mental health and the human condition, and a willingness to work with others in times of significant distress. Applicants must be able to demonstrate capacity for self-awareness, maturity and stability, and be able to cope with the emotional demands of the course. description The course will involve a comprehensive study of Carl Rogers theory and practice contextualised in a range of key paradigms. All students will be expected to embark on personal counselling/psychotherapy at their own expense for as long as required. What our graduates do Some graduates find employment within the NHS, as part of the IAPT (improving access to psychological therapy) programme; others set up in private practice or work for voluntary organisations. It should be borne in mind that counselling/ psychotherapy is not a full-time activity and that most therapists work part-time or have other occupations in allied sectors. Students experience a psychologically demanding programme which will challenge their world view. Type Duration UCAS Code Applications Full-time 3 years B940 Via UCAS Entry Requirements 120 UCAS points achieved through two subjects at A Level, 5 GCSEs (grades A*-C) (preferably including English) or an equivalent qualification (e.g. NVQ Health and Social Care Level 3 or BTEC Diploma in Health and Social Care (12 units) or Access to Higher Education qualification (to include psychology or sociology and English). All applicants must have completed an introductory counselling course and have used these skills in a helping capacity. Two sound references. All applicants must undergo an extended interview process. Note: Applicants who have successfully achieved the counselling diploma (or equivalent) may be considered for entry to the third year of this programme. What our graduates do Opportunities for graduates exist in social care settings and in a wide variety of NHS positions. Our graduates, who were already in employment, have been able to access more senior positions with management and supervisory responsibilities. Others go on to work as teachers, social workers, nursing physiotherapists and occupational therapists, some of these careers do require additional professional training. The balance of placement was excellent. 8 Degree in Management of Sport This course will give students the opportunity to develop management knowledge in the sports industry and, importantly, the necessary employability skills required to be successful in their chosen management career. This is ideal for individuals who have the desire to progress and the aspiration to manage a gym, be a manager in a leisure centre, work in sports development or have an entrepreneurial flair and wish to start their own sports business. The full-time Degree allows students to gain these industry specific management skills in two years. description The Degree in Management of Sport programme provides the opportunity to develop and practice managerial skills and knowledge applied to the variety of sports industries. The team of lecturers delivering this programme are all experts in their field and importantly maintain their connections with industry which includes the Team Manager of Great Britain U20 Men s Basketball Team, the Sports Development Manager and Time Warner. A range of guest speakers and industry visits complement the team of lecturers and further emphasises the dedication the team have in maintaining the vocational relevance of the degree programme. In addition to the two days at College, students will be required to undertake one day per week in a work placement. Many students choose to do their work experience with their current part-time employers, but if this is not suitable, students are supported with finding suitable work placements. Excellent industry visits enrich learning and have included trips to the Olympic Village. content Year one The first year of the Degree programme is designed to introduce students to a range of management and sport subject areas and to develop the important academic skills needed in order to get the best degree possible. Modules include: Introduction to Management Exercise and Health Sports Development Coaching Skills Business and the Business Environment Investigative Project Year two Year two is designed to build on the knowledge of year one, developing problem solving, analytical and evaluative skills to a higher level. Modules include: Professional Practice Community Sports Development Sports Marketing Coaching Processes and Issues Contemporary Management Functions and Processes (which includes Marketing Human Resources Management Accounting Contemporary Issues) What our graduates do On achieving the Degree, the vast majority of students then progress onto the final year of the BA (Hons) in Management of Sport and, upon graduation, students have gained successful employment in a range of private, public and charitable organisations. 8

9 BA (Hons) in Management of Sport This course will develop the essential skills and knowledge required for a successful management career in the sports industry. Who is this course for? This course is for individuals who have the desire to manage a gym, be a manager in a leisure centre, work in sports development, or have an entrepreneurial flair and wish to start up their own sports business. description This BA (Hons) Management of Sport programme provides students with the opportunity to develop management skills and knowledge applied to the variety of sports industries. The team of lecturers delivering the programme are experts in their field and importantly maintain their connections with industry which includes the Team Manager of Great Britain U20 Men s Basketball Team, the Sports Development Manager and Time Warner. Modules include: Planning and Performance for Sports Development Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription Performance Coaching Strategic Management Undergraduate Dissertation Digital Marketing A choice of: Digital Marketing or Teaching PE in Schools What our graduates do Upon graduation, recent students have gained successful employment in organisations in roles such as FA Sports Development Officer, FE Sports Co-ordinator, Sports Marketing and employment with the Sports Trust in Disability Sport. Applying for a place All applications for entry to Colchester Institute full-time higher education courses must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The UCAS code is shown next to the course details. Direct applications You may apply directly to Colchester Institute using one of our own application forms ONLY IF: (a) it is your intention to study part-time or (b) you are currently undertaking a full-time degree at Colchester Institute and wish to transfer internally to another degree or (c) you are applying for postgraduate study. UCAS will receive applications for entry in 2015 from 1st September You are advised to apply as soon as possible and preferably before the first UCAS deadline of 15th January Art and Design courses at Colchester Institute have a deadline of 24th March Colchester Institute will usually consider late applications received after the appropriate deadline and 30th June 2015 and through Clearing if places remain available. Deferred entry Colchester Institute accepts applications for students looking to defer entry until September 2016 for all courses. Any student applying for deferred entry would be required to meet the conditions of their offer by 31st August How to apply All applications for entry to courses are made online using UCAS. 11 CAREER GUIDANCE WELFARE UCAS application fee The application fee for 2015 was not available CLASSROOM at the time of going to print. The fee for 2014 was 23 for a multiple LEARNING application and 12 for a SUPPORT single choice. To confirm the application fees for 2015 please visit the UCAS website for more information. Employed applicants If you are to be sponsored by your employer to study on a course with a UCAS code, you must apply through UCAS. Telephone Fees INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT PLANNING Major Government reforms to student finance commenced in resulting in universities and colleges being able to charge variable fees. Universities and colleges that want to charge more than the basic fee (level not yet set for ) must provide additional support to promote access to disadvantaged students. At the time of printing, Colchester Institute had not set course fees and support levels for Once we have done so, we will update the fees pages on our website. We therefore recommend you consult our website for this information before you submit your UCAS application for entry to study in autumn These changes apply to UK and EU students wishing to study higher education in England. Student Loans and Grants FINANCE How much money will I need and how do I get it? Budgeting for student life is a tricky thing. The key is to be aware of the student loans and grants that are available to you, and to make sure you apply for them in good time. These can include Tuition Fee Loans, Maintenance Loans and Grants, and Disabled Students Allowance. As well as student loans and grants, some students may be eligible for financial support through Access to Learning Funds which provides discretionary support to certain categories of student.
