DATE: September ORGANISATION Dean Head of ITT Programmes Programme Leaders BEd and PGCE Primary/Early Years Senior Lecturer Primary and/or Early Years Education Subject Leaders 5. JOB PURPOSE: The Faculty wishes to appoint a Senior Lecturer to contribute to teaching a relative subject(s) on its ITT Primary Programmes. To teach graduate and postgraduate students relevant subject and pedagogic skills. To be responsible for the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate Primary Programmes within agreed subject areas.

2 To provide a supportive learning environment for students to develop graduate level and subject specific skills. To develop and implement teaching and learning initiatives. To contribute to the wider teaching of the faculty as appropriate, e.g. postgraduate taught programmes and participate in research and research supervision. 6. BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Faculty of Education and Children s Services is a dynamic and expanding area of the University of Chester. The portfolio of the Faculty has enlarged significantly over the past few years building on a historic base of quality provision in Primary and Secondary initial teacher training (ITT). Undergraduate ITT is currently provided through four-year B.Ed (Hons) degrees for Early Years and Primary specialisms. Postgraduate ITT is through a one-year PGCE or GTP in Early Years, Primary or Secondary. All of this entails partnership with over 300 Schools. Additionally we offer HLTA training. A BA single Honours in Early Childhood Studies operates on both campuses and there is a BA in Education Studies offered at major, joint and minor within the combined honours scheme. Part-time undergraduate study is available through a range of Foundation Degrees offered at the Warrington Campus. The CPD programme for practising school teachers ( M level) operates mainly through negotiated modules which are pupil/school focused and aim to have real impact on what happens in the classroom. This is proving to be relevant for and attractive to, teachers and has been an expanding aspect of our provision. The Faculty also hosts a number of specialist Masters pathways and an Ed.D. Research and scholarly activity is an important feature of the Faculty s activities and the results of tutor research have been published in books, journals and on the Internet and presentations have been made at international conferences. The Faculty has 5 professors, a HE Academy National Teacher Fellow and a Visiting Fellow. The Faculty has organised and hosted successful conferences and is enthusiastic to develop this provision. 7. WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS 7.1 Communication To facilitate students learning through lectures, tutorials and seminars at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within an agreed subject area(s.) To produce Programme material at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. To write and publish research papers. To contribute to the writing of Programme validation documents as required. To contribute to the cross-faculty development of curriculum and Programme materials. To provide expert response to queries from schools, students and University staff within an agreed subject area(s).

3 7.2 Teamwork and Motivation To act as subject/module leader as required and, in doing so, contribute to building team morale and expertise. 7.3 Liaison and Networking To attend internal Programme and Faculty meetings in order to carry out day-to-day liaison and building relationships within those networks. To maintain contact with appropriate external professional bodies within own subject and contribute to national - and where appropriate, international debates within those bodies. To be an active member of relevant departmental committees. To initiate and lead short term internal networks for e.g. new Foundation degrees, coordinating teams of staff from University/department and External Examiners; to oversee the development of new Programmes, write documentation, gain accreditation, and secure approval of new Programmes. To chair departmental working groups as required. 7.4 Service Delivery To teach pedagogy and subject knowledge within an agreed subject area(s) on the B.Ed and PGCE Primary Programmes. To act as a tutor for School-based Training. To advise on School-based Training with reference to agreed subject area(s). To deal with external agencies in the form of schools, Governmental organisations (e.g. TDA) and Local Authorities and to adapt Programmes to developing needs. To enhance the quality of taught and research programmes at under-graduate and/or postgraduate levels. To act upon peer observation feedback, student feedback, and External Examiner feedback to maintain high quality in learning and teaching. To advise students appropriately on academic and professional matters within own areas of expertise. To provide timely and accurate marking of students work in line with Faculty and University guidelines. 7.5 Decision Making In the context of the role-holder s teaching duties, to make independent decisions on the content of individual learning activities and marking for student assessment purposes, and to provide advice to colleagues on such matters. To sit on student selection panels for the BEd and PGCE Primary Programmes and to advise on matters relating specifically to an agreed subject area(s). To make collaborative decisions with Programme teams on the content of taught programmes at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels. To provide advice on issues such as malpractice and other assessment issues which will impact on the students, and to ensure consistency across departments. To grade students work in line with University and Faculty guidelines. 7.6 Planning and Organising Resources: To undertake elements of departmental leadership in areas such as organisation of staff development activities, assessment, students with specific learning needs, use of technology to support learning, or curriculum or student development roles. To act as subject/ module leader as required. To contribute to cross-faculty programme organisation.

4 To contribute to the organisation of delivery of Programmes within the timetable and resources provided. To contribute to the preparation of high quality teaching materials for own and students use. To organise own workload appropriately outside timetabled hours. 7.7 Initiative and Problem Solving To deal with problems where solutions have not previously been developed e.g. a student s academic progress and/or professional progress in school and personal issues (e.g. responding to needs of students with learning difficulties through referral to the appropriate support departments within the University.) To design new modules as required. To develop suites of new modules and contribute to overall Programme design taking into account data and applying creative approaches to solving the problems that arise. 7.8 Analysis and Research To research teaching materials and to identify and utilise current best practice within an agreed subject area(s.) To conduct complex subject specific research and scholarship as appropriate, making use of different methodologies and identifying relationships in complex situations. 7.9 Sensory and Physical Demands Standard office environment although elements of work undertaken will be done during visits to Partnership schools/settings Work Environment To be responsible for the health and safety of students in their immediate working environment. To understand how the work environment could impact on their own work or that of colleagues and students. To take standard actions, within health and safety guidelines where applicable, to adapt to the environment Pastoral Care and Welfare To act as a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) giving advice on matters of standard procedure but also advising on complex academic and professional issues Team Development To undertake peer mentoring and review of colleagues. To contribute towards students development of teaching skills by providing guidance and feedback based on own knowledge. To mentor students within an agreed subject area(s). To undertake the role of Personal Academic Tutor for a number of students Teaching and Learning Support To design content of modules and Programmes for students, adapting delivery to suit learners needs.

5 To design and deliver one-off lectures or workshops as required, providing feedback on performance. To design and deliver modules on a long term basis within an agreed subject area(s), introducing new methods of delivery where required. To assess students overall performance. To be responsible for the overall quality auditing of Programme provision. To contribute to overall curriculum development and Programme design in specific area(s) of curriculum and involving innovative approaches and fostering informed debate. To teach on CPD modules appropriate to expertise and experience. To support students in school in their development of teaching expertise within agreed subject area. 8. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE Qualifications Will be required to have, or will achieve/undertake to register for a Masters level qualification and membership of a relevant professional body (HEA.) Qualified Teacher Status. Experience Must have suitable expertise to deliver lectures within agreed subject areas. Experience of successful teaching of children, appropriate for the position. Previous teaching experience in higher education or further education is desirable. Skills/Attributes An ability to keep abreast of, and lead developments in, teaching and scholarship specific to the subject area(s.) An ability to support students both academically and pastorally. Organisational and administrative skills. IT skills including the ability to use Word, , Internet. An ability to lead and/or work as part of a team. Research activity as demonstrated through publication or conference presentation. Up-to-date knowledge of development in the field of education within an agreed subject area(s.) Experience of successful teaching in Primary and/or Early Years settings. Previous teaching experience in higher education or further education is desirable. Desirable Requirements are those that would be useful for the post holder to possess and will be considered when more than one applicant meets the essential requirements.

7 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER TERMS & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT FACULTY OF EDUCATION AND CHILDREN S SERVICES SENIOR LECTURER IN PRIMARY EDUCATION 2 x 1FTE OR UP TO 4 FRACTIONAL POSTS 2 YEARS FIXED TERM CONTRACT SALARY SCALE University Scale TSR5, points 40 43, 40, , 016 per annum pro rata. CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT Those candidates who do not hold a higher degree will be required to make reasonable progress towards this. RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT It is a requirement of this post that within 12 months of appointment, the post-holder should live within a 30 mile radius or within a one hour travelling time by public transport from the University. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 35 days per annum pro rata (pro-rata during the commencement and cessation years). Two extra statutory days during the Christmas period. MEDICAL EXAMINATION Successful candidates will be required to complete an occupational health questionnaire, and may be required to undergo a medical examination. CRB CHECKS The successful applicant will have to undergo a CRB check before an appointment can be made. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualification as outlined on the Job Description and Person Specification provided. Upon appointment, copies of essential certificates will be required by HRM Services. PENSION SCHEME The University is an admitted body to the Teachers Pension Scheme. All academic staff are eligible for membership of the scheme, and upon appointment, will be asked to indicate whether or not they wish to join the scheme.
