1 Academic 4 (SL&TF) Role Profile (Profile builds on the SL Profile which relates to the substantive role undertaken in addition to the Fellowship) Communication Disseminate conceptual and complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences using appropriate media and methods. Chair meetings with colleagues e.g. for staff deployment and timetabling and at Faculty level with other committees and working groups. Resolve student complaints (especially plagiarism), gathering evidence and mediating between unit leader and student as necessary, in relation to own units. Produce a range of written papers and policy documents to contribute to Faculty and Departmental strategy to support the quality assurance and strategic planning processes e.g. Learning and Teaching (L&T) strategy. Maintain and update L&T Web resources. Write funding applications for research projects and other initiatives. Teamwork Take responsibility for at least one team, for example a unit team, leading and coordinating effort of teaching and support staff. Member of teaching teams on a number of programmes. Supervise the work of others e.g. post graduate and research students and project teams. Provide academic leadership (e.g. by advising Programme Team) to those working within the programme areas co-ordinating the work of others and agreeing work plans of teaching staff. Member of Faculty Senior Management Group, providing input on L&T issues and developments. Contribute to quality enhancement and curriculum development of complex programmes, taking a principal role in L&T development and review. Advises programme teams in L&T matters e.g. to advance the e- learning and blended learning agenda or review validation and make minor/major modifications. Lead teams responsible for implementation of initiatives or programmes, or significant projects e.g. Faculty Working Group on good practice and innovation Lead action groups in L&T and e-learning at Faculty level. 1
2 Liaison and Networking Liaise and negotiate with professional bodies and associations on L&T issues and with groups that enhance L&T quality and/or accredit or validate programmes. Participate in cross-departmental working groups to review practice and procedures and plan strategic developments. Take a leading role in Faculty wide developments e.g. review of under graduate programmes. Coordinate MMU special interest groups. Chair Faculty L&T Committees and play a significant role in faculty L&T plans, creation of action plans and policy documents. Lead and develop internal networks by building contacts across the institution, chairing and participating in working groups and committees. Expected to be prominent in and liaise with HEA and to disseminate information. Liaises with HEA research teams Lead and develop external networks for example with external examiners and assessors, employers and other HEIs to promote the department or faculty, both in context of subject research and in L&T. Promote MMU in professional, business and the wider community. Develop joint research initiatives and establish strong links with relevant communities. Service Delivery Develop a productive learning and teaching environment including teaching support and assessment, designing and developing modules and imparting information and guidance. Conduct module or unit reviews/participate in programme reviews. Use knowledge gained from external networks to inform programme development. Provide advice on good practice to programme teams. Responsible for delivery of a specific project linked to Fellowship. Responsible for delivery of research and consultancy projects. Involved in strategic matters e.g. e-learning coordinator for Faculty. General leadership in L&T at Departmental level. Responsible for staff L&T development and Faculty L&T conferences. Raise profile of L&T in the institution through action plans and policy documents. Bring about cultural change in practice in L&T SLTFs are looked to as change engines. Develop and provide support for visit days, open days, sixth form days and similar activities. Develop publicity material. Seek external partners in the development and delivery of programmes e.g. industry input for new programmes and development of Problem Based Learning. Set internal and external standards through leadership and participation in working groups and undertaking peer review of academic journal articles. 2
3 Decision Making Processes Take sole responsibility for the design and delivery of own modules and assessment methods. Take decisions on the operational aspects of programmes. Decide on staff development programmes. Take day to day decisions on own research activities and contribute to decision making on research activities at departmental or faculty level. Contribute to decisions which impact on other programmes within the department school or faculty. Develop new policies and procedures in the way of approaching the whole teaching process which can affect student performance. Make decisions on initiatives or programmes which impact on the department or school. Make collaborative decisions in action groups. Lead discussions about opportunities for strategic development of new programmes or areas of activity both in programme and L&T contexts. Contribute to cross-mmu agendas, e.g. discussion of L&T in groups of committees across MMU and staff development across departments. Provide advice and make proposals on strategic issues in L&T and other performance matters affecting the department or school. Provide input to decisions as part of Faculty Senior Management Group. Planning and Organising Resources Undertake Unit leadership and all planning and coordination. Plan and organise student placements, field trips and student exchanges. Undertake course reviews at departmental/school level. Contribute to the programme planning process, resolving issues that arise and ensuring the effective planning of teaching resources and compliance with quality standards and regulations of the University. Contribute to the management of quality, audit and other external assessments at a Faculty level. Supervision of PhD students. Plan and organise L&T events and conferences. Contribute to the overall management of the departmental/school in areas such as business and financial management. Be involved in school/departmental level strategic planning. Contributes to Faculty L&T strategy. 5 year term with annual targets. Provide leadership in the implementation of e-learning in Faculty. Provide training and admin plans for support and implementation. General contribution to the institution s strategic L&T planning processes 3
4 Initiative and Problem Solving Resolve problems affecting the delivery of units within programmes and ensure that solutions comply with University regulations. Find ways to persuade colleagues to adopt good practice or to reflect on their own practice. Find the best ways to communicate with students in programmes which adopt new delivery methods; solve problems related to students, e.g. how to deal with hand-ins, feedback, plagiarism and other general issues when using new L&T systems. Contribute to the development of the departmental or school strategic plan and the development of action plans to support implementation. Provide advice on student issues such as increased flexibility and widening participation, the effects of increased e-learning etc. and devise innovative ways to address imbalances and overcome difficulties. Monitor market trends and developments and use intelligence gathered to lead internal debate about subject development and opportunities for the introduction of new programmes. Drive developments through to delivery. Track e-learning trends and activity. Develop and implement new L&T practice, provide a lead on Faculty issues, develop solutions and strategies. Analysis and Research Supervise research projects conducted by others. Extend, transform and apply knowledge acquired from scholarship and own research to teaching research and appropriate external activities. Investigate and undertake market and pedagogical research on areas affecting demand for programmes and their successful delivery. Undertake L&T research and specific project linked to Fellowship. Determine research objectives and submit research proposals at an individual and group level. Contribute to bids for research, consultancy and other additional funds. Carry out independent research and act as principal investigator and project leader. Participate as a member of a research Institute and Faculty Working Group and contribute to the development of research strategies. Act as a referee and contribute peer assessment on a regular basis across a range of publications in the discipline. Make presentations or exhibitions at national or international conferences or other similar events. Sensory and Physical Demands Use multi-media teaching aids. Dependent on discipline and type of work, use specialist equipment within a laboratory/workshop environment requiring appropriate skills. Balance the pressures of teaching, research and administrative demands and competing deadlines. 4
5 Work Environment Be aware of risks in the work environment and their potential impact on their own and others work. Identify hazards within laboratory/workshop and ensure adequate protective clothing/safety equipment is used by self and others and take responsibility for the health and safety of students in the area. Conduct risk assessments within laboratory/workshops and prior to field trips. Pastoral Care and Welfare Provide support and advice to students on a range of sensitive welfare issues. Act as a personal tutor, providing first line support appreciating the needs of individual students and their circumstances. Deal with referred student issues and pass on for professional help if required. Provide first line support for colleagues, referring to Head of Department or other sources of professional help if required. Team Development Contribute to formal staff induction. Organise and deliver staff development in e-learning. Act as a personal mentor to peers and colleagues and establish mentor relationships for colleagues, offering mentoring in specific areas. Provide ad-hoc mentoring in areas of expertise. Identify staff development and training needs and organise events for staff development. Organise team development events, away days and faculty L&T conferences. Undertake PDRs for staff and be formally involved in CPD scheme. Develop policy and guidance from results of project linked to Fellowship. Develop staff change management skills. 5
6 Teaching and Learning Support Design, develop and deliver a range of programmes of study at undergraduate and post-graduate level. Review on a regular basis programme content, teaching materials and method of delivery updating where required. Develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students. Design/ develop new modules and units in subject specialism and decide on teaching and learning process. Involved in course reviews, advising on L&T and other issues, such as ensuring that assessments meet learning objectives Expected to play a leading role in L&T innovation, trialling methods before implementation Deliver workshops for development of staff outside work team Deliver workshops at other HEIs Development of L&T, facilitating methods and techniques, strategic input to developments, trialling of new practices. Ensure that programme design and delivery is consistent with departmental/faculty approach and MMU quality standards and regulations. Knowledge and Experience Recognised as an authority in the subject area, demonstrated by contributions to development of knowledge in the field both internally and externally. Required to provide evidence of excellence in teaching Expected to have expertise in particular areas of delivery of L&T e.g. e- Learning Write papers for publication in refereed academic journals and present papers at UK and international conferences. Possess a range of administrative and managerial skills and has substantial academic experience to undertake the non-teaching aspects of the role. 6
