The post holder may be based at any premises the University occupies and may be required to work at any University site or any other reasonable location where the University is undertaking its business. GENERAL The Faculty of Arts and Technology comprises of Four Schools: Art and Design; Media; Computing; Education. The BA (Hons) Interior Design course is located in the School of Art and Design. In addition to the Interior design course this School includes undergraduate programmes in Illustration; Fine Art; Fashion design; Landscape Architecture; Photography; Photography Editorial and Advertising; Photojournalism & Documentary Photography; Graphics; Advertising. Taught postgraduate programmes include MA Fine Art; MA Visual Communication; MA Photography and MA Landscape Architecture. An expanding cohort of research students studying for MA by Research; M Phil and PhD complete the School s academic provision. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible to: Head of School of Art and Design (Line Manager)

2 Academic Subject Leader in Design (Operational Manager) 1. Primary Functions 1.1 To contribute to the teaching and development of the Interior Design subject curriculum. To contribute to other Faculty programmes as required. 1.2 To provide tutorial support to students on the Interior Design course, individual modules for which the postholder has been assigned role as lead or contributing tutor, and, if required, through the Personal Tutor scheme. 1.3 To maintain professional standing and expertise by a process of continuing personal and subject development through participation in University and Faculty staff development events and through personal self-development. 1.4 To develop and maintain the professional standing of the Interior Design course with industry contacts, partner institutions, external organisations, alumni, professional practitioners and accredited professional bodies and associations. 1.5 Actively encourage student involvement and success through the undertaking of local, national and international competitions; work placements, field and study visits; exhibitions. 1.6 To ensure that Health and Safety procedures within classrooms, studio and workshop areas are adhered to. 1.7 To ensure University and Faculty policies and methodologies for teaching, learning, and quality assurance are implemented and adhered to. 1.8 To undertake assessment of student s work and ensure University and Faculty policies for the processes and stages of assessment, and appropriate feedback to students are achieved within stated time constraints. 1.9 To assist in student recruitment activities including interviews, open days and external recruitment events and maintaining a body of contemporary student work for use in publicity material 1.10 To be active in the organisation, curating and presentation of student work through publications and/or exhibitions. 2. Secondary Functions 2.1 To contribute to the administration of the Faculty. 2.2 To contribute to the development of new undergraduate or postgraduate programmes within the Faculty. 2.3 Contributing to maintaining the currency of curriculum both through review and subsequent implementation of changes identified in order to refresh or revise course content and structure.

3 2.4 To contribute to the knowledge transfer, income generation and consultancy activities of the Faculty. 2.5 To make a contribution to the Faculty research profile. 2.6 To undertake any other duties and responsibilities, commensurate with the grade of the post, properly directed by the Line Manager. These variations will not change the general character of the post or the level of responsibility entailed. This job description outlines the main duties and responsibilities of the post and should be read in conjunction with the guidelines for determination of the duties of academic employees and the library of academic role profiles. These are to be found in the Personnel Handbook. This job/role description is a guide to the work the post holder will initially be required to undertake. It may be amended from time to time to meet changing circumstances by mutual agreement. It is expected that the job/role description will be regularly reviewed by the post holder and his/her manager. MA in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture or equivalent relevant discipline. Training in Sustainable Design Practices Possession of a PGCFHE or equivalent. Postgraduate Qualification Membership of the Higher Education Academy. Membership of Interior Design PSRB or equivalent PhD in Interior Design or a relevant discipline. 2 Experience Experience of teaching in HE, or FE institutions. Proven track record of professional experience, knowledge and creative expertise in commercial Interior design practice. Subject-leading knowledge of discipline area and strong awareness of sustainable design strategies and principles and how they can enhance and inform the curriculum 3 Aptitude/Skills Excellent written, oral communication and interpersonal skills. Good technical skills. Strong awareness of contemporary practice appropriate to this subject area. Have access to a strong network of contemporary contacts within the industry. An ability in producing and delivering discipline appropriate high quality publications/outputs in major conferences and journals, or through practice Successful track record in securing external funding for research, business and innovation activity Ability to teach all elements of ethics, law and professional practice appropriate to Interior Designers / Interior Architects. Awareness of socio-

5 Knowledge and understanding of emerging and future trends in the Interior Design profession in particular of Building Information Modelling (BIM) economic, political and technical contexts which have informed historical & contemporary practice in Interior Design and an ability to effectively embed theory into practice. Knowledge and professional practice expertise of contemporary CAD packages e.g. Vector Works with BIM capabilities, AutoCAD, 3D Max, Adobe Suite, Sketch up 4 Disposition Good team player but able to take initiative. Able to work with good humour and to develop intelligent and innovative initiatives to support the progression of the course and its student cohort. Commitment to innovation in Interior Design & design for sustainable living. April 2015 Energetic, enthusiastic and ability to inspire and encourage students. *(Ref University Policy on Staff Participation in the PGCAP) Subject to the specific circumstances listed above, it is a condition of employment that all newly appointed staff on Academic Staff Contracts with fewer than three years experience of teaching in Higher Education, and not already possessing a teaching in Higher Education qualification, should acquire the University Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCAP). Instead of undertaking the PGCAP Staff with the equivalent of a minimum of two years full time teaching experience in higher education may seek the agreement of their line manager to apply for membership of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) after they have taught for the equivalent of one year full time at the University. Staff who are employed on a fixed term contract (FTC) which is less than three years will not be required to undertake the PGCAP. However, staff on a FTC of more than one year will be entitled to undertake the PGCAP whilst in employment.
