JOB PURPOSE: The learning, teaching and assessment of students at undergraduate and postgraduate level as directed. This will involve preparation and delivery of teaching and learning material within the relevant modules/programmes and the formative and summative assessment of student work. The successful candidate will undertake pastoral duties in support of students as required. They will consolidate and develop external partnerships and professional/industrial relationships and engage with scholarship/ research/knowledge transfer/income generating projects as directed by the Head of Department.

2 7. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Department is dynamic and future-focussed, with excellent, energetic and caring staff, an innovative curriculum and diverse research interests. Our students are our raison d etre, and they benefit enormously from the collective expertise in the Department. Recent development has resulted in a new contemporary gallery / art space and staff office accommodation. There has also been significant investment in resources in book arts production, printmaking and casting technology. Work in Fine Art is long established at Chester, with Graphic Design and Photography launched in The Department now offers single and combined honours in Fine Art and in Graphic Design and combined honours in Photography. Single honours Photography will launch in the near future. An MA in Fine Art has run successfully for many years, and a recently validated MA in Design welcomed its first cohort this academic year. There are currently 365 full time equivalent undergraduates (128 in Fine Art, 165 in Graphic Design and 72 in Photography) and 10 postgraduates. There are a small number of PhD students. We have 15 full time academic staff supported by visiting lecturers, five technicians and a dedicated secretarial team. The Faculty relocated in 2007 to the Kingsway site. Facilities are good and facilitate a wide range of traditional and contemporary visual arts practice. There is dedicated graphic design studio space, and technical workshop areas that include, textile space, photographic dark rooms, printmaking studio, a dedicated new media lab, and shared lecture theatre and seminar/classroom access. Library provision is good and is based on the main campus which is a twenty minute walk away. The Department shares the Kingsway site with the Department of Performing Arts which offers degrees in Dance, Drama and Popular Music and it is also home to programmes in Journalism that are offered by the Department of Media. (The Media Department is otherwise based at our Warrington Campus and offers degrees in TV Production; Radio Production; Commercial Music Production; Advertising; Media Studies; Film Studies and Journalism.) Delivery of Single and Combined honours provision in Graphic Design is to be consolidated at the Kingsway site only as of The Department of Art and Design also oversees BA Honours and Foundation Degree provision at a number of partner FE Colleges. The Department does not itself offer Foundation Degrees. The Department made its second RAE submission in 2008 and obtained a proportion of 3* rating outputs. The Chester Centre for Research in Arts and Media (CCRAM) is located in the Faculty of Arts and Media and forms an overarching support structure for the research activities of the faculty s three

3 departments. By encouraging critical exploration of contemporary practice and its reception and interpretation, the Centre seeks to further the gathering body of knowledge in the areas of Art and Design, Media, and Performing Arts, and develop innovative models of best practice in the methodology and realisation of this knowledge. CCRAM is supported by the department in particular through Maxine Bristow, Reader in Fine Art and a subject panel member for RAE Colleagues exhibit and publish regionally, nationally and internationally, and engage in both traditional and practice based research. The Department is currently engaged in a number of successful knowledge transfer and curatorial projects and has ambitions to expand this area of activity. The successful candidate will be fully committed to working in education and have a sound knowledge of the forms and practices of Graphic Design as both practical subject and academic discipline. They will be experienced as a practicing Graphic Designer / Design Educator. They will have the flexibility to communicate a range of digital and non-digital print and screen based design concepts in contemporary graphic communication with a particular focus on emerging network communication development, web 2 interaction and design for portable devices. This will include the theory and practice of emerging developments in typography, composition, illustration, multi-media, web design and visual research. 8. WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS: 8.1 Communicating Effectively To communicate effectively with colleagues and students, orally and in writing, to ensure effective delivery of the subject area. Provide timely and effective oral and written feedback to students regarding aspects of their work as appropriate. Promote and evidence professional approaches and standards when dealing with external agencies and contacts in the development of industry contacts, external links and educational partnerships. 8.2 Leadership and Working Collaboratively As part of an established team contribute to the positive working atmosphere in the art and design department in general and the graphic design team in particular. Lead and/or contribute to teams responding to external briefs in respect of knowledge transfer/income generating project opportunities. 8.3 Liaison and Networking Represent the subject area across university working groups and committees as directed by the Head of Department. Make a full contribution to team and Departmental meetings. Foster collaboration with external contacts, networks and partnerships

4 including educational bodies, employers and professional bodies. Identify and develop research and/or knowledge transfer initiatives and where possible foster collaboration with external agencies and generate income as appropriate. 8.4 Delivering a High Quality Standard of Service Prepare and deliver effective teaching and learning opportunities and provide timely and relevant feedback to the students. Take pastoral responsibility for an agreed number of tutees and keep effective records of meetings, recommending referral to institutional support where necessary. 8.5 Effective Decision Making To contribute to the decision-making processes involved in effective delivery of the above services to students. 8.6 Planning and Organising Self and Others To plan alongside colleagues ensuring effective delivery strategies and understanding the resource implications of these decisions. 8.7 Innovation and Improvement (Effective Problem Solving) Supported by the Graphic Design team and the wider department structures to respond to issues both programme/subject related and pastoral. 8.8 Analysis and Research To undertake subject specific scholarship and research as appropriate. 8.9 Sensory and Physical Demands Expected levels of physical effort may be required for occasional use of, for example, portable camera and lighting equipment, or in the preparation of shows and exhibitions from time to time Work Environment The role holder will work in classrooms, lecture theatres and studio environments. Further off site working may be appropriate i.e. touring

5 exhibitions, careers fairs, industry networking and formal and informal partnership meetings Pastoral Care and Welfare The role holder will undertake Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) duties. This role will require the tutor to meet regularly with students, keep accurate records of meetings and refer students to relevant institutional support where necessary 8.12 Team Development The post holder will be required to take part in the department s annual staff development processes, including Performance Development Review (PDR) and the department s peer observation processes. 8 DEPARTMENT OF ART AND DESIGN LECTURER IN GRAPHIC DESIGN SALARY SCALE TSR 3, Points 31 34, 31,020-33,884 per annum. CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT Those candidates who do not possess either a postgraduate teaching qualification or Higher Education Academy membership will be expected to work towards one of these. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 35 days per annum. Two extra privilege days during the Christmas period. MEDICAL EXAMINATION The successful candidate will be required to complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire and will also be required to undergo a medical examination. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualification as outlined on the Job Description and Person Specification provided. Upon appointment, copies of essential certificates will be required by HRM Services. CRB CHECKS The successful applicant will have to undergo a CRB check before an appointment can be made.
