1 ST JOSEPH S INSTITUTION INTERNATIONAL Vice-Principal (Pastoral) Reports to: Principal Job Purpose: Enhance the quality of pastoral care and wellbeing for students and staff. Support the school in securing the highest quality of holistic education for all pupils and lead the continuous improvement of pastoral provision (for both students and teachers) in the school. Ensure the smooth running of the school through effective planning, implementation and evaluation of school structures and procedures. General description of the post All post-holders at SJI International are to ensure that the school s Lasallian vision, ethos and values are embedded in the day-to-day and long-term running of the School. The holder of this post is expected to carry out the professional duties as Vice-Principal (Pastoral) as described below. The Vice-Principal (Pastoral), working with others, is responsible for planning, monitoring and evaluating the School s performance to identify the priorities for continuous improvement and raising standards; developing policies and practices and ensuring that resources are efficiently and effectively used to achieve the School s values, aims and objectives. Main Areas of Responsibility The Vice-Principal (Pastoral) has accountability for the following: I) Pastoral Care of High School students
2 II) Enrichment Programme III) Wellbeing and Positive Education IV) Staff welfare V) General school systems VI) Development and implementation of school behaviour policies VII) Communication with parents VIII) Student attendance IX) Oversight of School Boarding provision The Vice-Principal (Pastoral) will be responsible for the following: I) Pastoral Care of High School students: a) Leading the Grade 7 to 12 Pastoral Team (including the Head of Senior School, Heads of Grades and Tutors) to support all students in reaching both their maximum academic potential and the highest standards of personal wellbeing. b) Develop positive strategies, in line with the schools core value of Mutual Respect, so as to promote collaboration and understanding between different students/groups of students so as to benefit from the diversity of student population. c) Ensure that organisational structures (such as the House system, Tutor Group allocations, 1-to-1 Tutoring, Student Council etc) provide students with the best opportunities for success and personal growth. d) Working with the Coordinator of Student Leadership, organise and develop further Student Leadership opportunities. e) Working with the Heads of Grade and Head of Senior School, organise the Registration/Tutor Period and Enrichment Period programme. II) Enrichment Programme: a) Lead the Assistant Principal (Enrichment) to ensure that the Enrichment Programme (Service Learning, Outdoor Education, and Activity and Sport Programme) provides our students the best opportunities to experience a truly holistic education. III) Wellbeing and Positive Education: a) Lead the School Support Service provision (Counselling, School Psychologist and Learning Development Teams) to identify and plan intervention for students who need extra support. This includes chairing the bi-weekly consultation meetings (with internal and
3 external support services) to plan, implement and review intervention for individual students. b) Ensure that all teachers are fully aware of the school s identification of students at risk of significant harm, including ensuring that all staff are trained in Suicide Prevention measures, and are aware of the Ask, Listen, Keep Safe process. c) Act as the School s designated Child Protection officer, and ensure that Child Protection cases are managed appropriately (and include appropriate procedures for record keeping). d) Facilitate effective annual Safeguarding training, and deployment of resources, to all members of our community. This included responsibility for the school s online SOS (Support Our Students) anonymous student support system. e) Develop principles of Positive Education that are contemporary, grounded in relevant practices of positive psychology, and which reflect all facets of the school s mission. f) Working alongside the Vice-Principal (Academic), lead the development of a strong Positive Education focus across the school, in the Academic, Pastoral and Enrichment Programmes. g) Liaise with the Co-ordinator of Wellbeing Education (formerly known as PSHE) to ensure that the curriculum matches Positive Education principles, and the needs of our school community. IV) Staff Welfare: a) Set up systems to proactively address issues of staff wellbeing. b) Provide a channel of communication for staff to school management through regular formal and informal liaison with staff, acting as a barometer for staff wellbeing. c) Ensure that staff are fully aware of pastoral and enrichment activities and events taking place in the school, especially where lessons are impacted directly. V) General School Systems: a) Develop plans and policies that allow for the effective running of the school. This may include setting up working parties to collaboratively focus on areas for development. b) Communicate effectively with staff, students and parents to ensure that systems are fully understood and followed. c) Ensure that the Principal is aware of significant issues which may impact the day-to-day running of the school (special events, fire drills, significant or high tariff disciplinary issues, significant parental complaints). d) Organise special school events, as required. e) Ensure that systems effectively record student information (such as behaviour issues, attendance, welfare, achievements).
4 f) Working with Heads of Grade, Head of Senior School and academic teams, manage the effective induction and seamless transition of new students to the school, with a special focus on the Grade 6 to Grade 7 transition, but also including the transition from Grade 8 into Grade 9 and Grade 10 in Grade 11. VI) Student Behaviour: a) Ensure that the school policies promote self-discipline and positive behaviour at all times and monitor the school to ensure consistent application of the school s Behaviour for Learning Policy, ensuring a positive school ethos is maintained. b) Develop policies and procedures that promote positive self-discipline and good behaviour at all times. This includes the development of Restorative Practices which identify, resolve, and reduce issues of conflict (including bullying). c) Develop a positive atmosphere where students are recognised and praised for good behaviour, including the development of systems to recognise and celebrate positive behaviour and individual contribution to the holistic learning programme. d) Lead the investigation and resolution of all serious disciplinary incidents, ensuring effective record keeping of these incidents and communication to others, including making recommendations to the Principal in the case of serious disciplinary issues. e) Ensure that the Principal is aware of any significant disciplinary issues that have taken place. VII) Communication with Parents: a) Ensure that regular and appropriate communication takes place between school and home, including the development of clear policies and procedures that staff must follow when communicating with parents. b) Working with Vice-Principal (Curriculum) and Heads of Grade, arrange regular Parent/Teacher Consultations, as set out in Assessment policy. c) Ensure that the Heads of Grade communicate regularly with parents, including a Start of Term and End of Term communications. d) Lead the recruitment, appointment and logistical organisation of the Parent Support Group VIII) Student Attendance: a) Working with Heads of Grade, monitor the attendance and punctuality of all students to school, as well as to individual subject classes. b) Manage the work of the Attendance Officers and Heads of Grade and their communication with parents regarding issues of punctuality and absenteeism. This
5 includes ensuring that timely communication with parents and teachers takes place (ensuring first day calling procedure works efficiently). c) Lead appropriate interventions to enhance student attendance. d) Facilitate the celebration of outstanding attendance including 100% attendance certificates at the end of each term and end of year. e) Follow up with teachers who fail to complete registers consistently (when prompted by Attendance Officer) f) Lead Head of Grade Team in achieving school Attendance Targets. IX) Oversight of School Boarding provision: a) Liaise with High School Admissions Officer regarding appropriate placement and administration of Boarding students (our boarders stay at a partner boarding house). b) Liaise with Boarding Masters to ensure optimum student wellbeing of our boarders. c) Manage the work of our Resident Mentors (two SJI International teachers live in the boarding house as residential tutors). General Areas of Responsibility: Leadership and management As a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) the VP (Pastoral) should contribute by: Ensuring that the school and the people and resources within it are organised and managed to provide an efficient, effective and safe learning environment. Leading the school in the absence of the Principal, if required. Supporting the Principal in developing positive working relationships with and between all staff. Supporting the Principal in providing a clear direction for the development of the school. Ensuring that School policies and procedures, as defined by the SLT, are carried out by the teaching staff. Contributing to the establishing the core values of the leadership team and their practical expression. Contributing to management decisions on all aspects of policy, development and organisation by playing a significant role in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of the school s improvement plan. Assisting in the recruitment and appointment of staff, as requested, and their deployment to make most effective use of their skills, expertise and experience.
6 Ensuring that all staff have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities and to ensure staff share the aims of the school in promoting a high quality of learning across the school. Ensuring that the range, quality and use of all available resources is monitored, evaluated and reviewed to improve the quality of education for all students. Supporting the Principal and staff in the review, implementation, development and monitoring of whole school policies which promote the school's values, aims and objectives. Attending SLT meetings as required, and report back to staff when necessary. Establishing good relationships, encourage good working practices and support and lead teachers. Overseeing relevant aspects of the school organisation and management, including preparing agendas, chairing meetings and producing minutes, in order to ensure that school policies and practices are being delivered. Supporting the performance management process as required and use the process to develop own personal and professional effectiveness as well as those staff members assigned. Personal development and well-being The VP (Pastoral) should contribute by: Securing and maintaining good working relationships with colleagues and students. Being an excellent example to pupils, staff and parents through their professional presentation and conduct in order to promote pupils personal development. Supporting the Principal in leading the development of the personalised learning agenda, raising achievement and improving the quality of teaching, learning and support across the school. Treating people fairly, equitably and with dignity and respect to create and maintain a positive school culture. Supporting the Principal to build a collaborative learning culture within the school and to look for ways to actively engage with other schools to build effective learning communities. Ensuring that parents are well informed about the School s curriculum; its targets; students' attainment and their part in the process of improvement. Supporting staff to meet personal and professional targets. People and Relationships The VP (Pastoral) should contribute by: Sustaining effective, positive relationships with all staff, pupils, parents and the local community. Working collaboratively and managing innovation and change.
7 Managing and developing effective working relationships with Principal and senior managers in the school. Resources Management The VP (Pastoral) should contribute by: Assisting in managing and producing the annual school budgets. Producing a budget that is based on priorities for expenditure for areas of responsibility. General The VP (Pastoral) should contribute by: Taking on specific tasks related to the day-to-day administration and organisation of the school as requested by the Principal. Taking on any additional responsibilities that might, from time to time, be determined. Identifying and engaging in appropriate training opportunities to promote professional effectiveness in this role. Leading by example as a teacher and as a manager, achieving high standards of pupil attainment, behaviour and motivation through effective teaching.
