1 Job Description Job title: Pre-sessional Course Leader, PSM 5 Department/School: Academic Skills Centre (ASC) Grade: 7 (0.8 fte) Location: LTEO Job purpose The main purpose of the post is, under the direction of the Head of Pre-sessional, to direct, manage and develop the Pre-sessional Management Programme, PSM 5, which runs from July to September (10 teaching weeks). PSM 5 comprises mainly combined offer students. For these students PSM 5 forms the first part of their Master s degree Programme in the School of Management. The Course Leadership role is calculated at 0.3 fte. For c8 weeks of the summer the post-holder will be working full time to deliver the 5 week PSM 5 Programme. In addition to that he/she will spend another c25 days preparing the Programme at other times of the year. For the remaining time (0.5 fte) the post-holder will be required to teach up to 376 hours per year on ASC courses. Source and nature of management provided Responsible to Head of Pre-sessional, who provides overall policy and guidance. From time to time you may be asked to assist in the facilitation of CPD activities. This will form part of your substantive role and you will not receive additional payment for these activities. Special conditions Because of the intensive nature of some of the ELC courses, there may be occasions when you are required to work overtime or on a University holiday. These will be offset by TOIL. Main duties and responsibilities 1 Course Management and Development 1. Manage PSM 5, ensuring that the Programme provides the best possible Academic English and Study Skills preparation for international students coming PSM 5 Course Leader JD/PS Page

2 to Bath University to pursue a Master s degree Programme in the School of Management. 2. Under the direction of the Head of Pre-sessional, and in keeping with the vision and integrity of the overall Pre-sessional Programme and the requirements of degree programmes in the School of Management, including MBA, design PSM5 according to student-centred pedagogic principles, ensuring that the curriculum is coherent and providing clear routes of progression to degree programmes in Management. 3. Project-lead and manage the creation of suitable in-house teaching and learning materials for PSM Plan and manage the timetable for the programme, including visiting lectures, case studies and all activities related to learning and teaching beyond the usual timetable. 5. Undertake the occasional teaching and assessment of students in elements of the PSM 5 courses to cover for occasional teacher absence and to better and more directly understand the requirements of students and to maintain the highest level of teaching practice. 6. Oversee student welfare and progress for PSM 5, ensuring all students have regular tutorials to monitor and support their academic progress and pastoral welfare, and liaising closely with the Social Programme & Student Welfare Manager, to ensure that the Social Programme is appropriate and of value to the students. 7. Lead evaluation of all aspects of PSM 5, including the subsequent academic achievement of students who have completed the Programme. Use the evaluation to ensure the subsequent improvement of PSM Work with the Head of Pre-sessional to meet the demands and expectations of external customers (agents, partner institutions, etc.) and internal stakeholders within the University, by anticipating their needs and identifying opportunities to change and improve PSM Lead and manage projects to develop and improve PSM Produce individual reports on each student s progress and achievements for the School of Management at the end of the course. 11. Produce an annual report on PSM 5 for ASC, LTEO and School of Management consideration. 2 Teaching 1. Undertake the teaching and assessment of students in elements of PS 1, 2 & 3 and/or courses on the In-sessional Programme, APCS or tutorials. Utilise this input to better and more directly understand the requirements of students and to maintain the highest level of teaching practice. 3 Quality Assurance 1. Manage the quality of teaching, learning and assessment on PSM 5 through a number of different quality assurance mechanisms, such as teacher briefing and induction, observation of lessons and teacher development. 2. Take a leading role in the quality assurance for PSM 5, ensuring that all PSM 5 Course Leader JD/PS Page

3 appropriate inspection criteria are met, and all associated documentation is in place, for any inspection visit by an appropriate external accreditation body. 4 Resources 1. Under the direction of the Head of Pre-sessional, manage resources and budgets for PSM 5 to ensure their viability and sustainability. 2. In liaison with the Head of Academic Skills Resources, ensure the availability of appropriate teaching rooms for PSM 5. 5 Human Resources 1. In conjunction with the Head of Pre-sessional, plan and manage the staffing of PSM 5, including recruitment or deployment of extra teaching staff as appropriate. 2. Manage Teaching Fellows and working on PSM 5. 6 Marketing and Communications 1. Contribute to the marketing, publicity and communications for the Pre-sessional Programme, in consultation with the Head of Pre-sessional. 2. Liaise regularly with the Head of Pre-sessional to ensure the effective operation of PSM 5 as part of the larger ASC. 3. Liaise with the School of Management regarding queries regarding eligibility of students for PSM 5 and their outcomes at the end of the course.
