Hello SIP trunks SIP has been around as a voice standard since Over the last decade and a half, it has gained significant momentum as the main protocol for unified communication (UC). Now with carriers around the world turning off ISDN, SIP trunks are ready to hit the mainstream as their much-improved replacement. At Orange Business Services we understand that SIP trunking and UC go hand-in-hand and many of our customers have already adopted them as part of their overall UC transformation. SIP allows you to manage all your different communications channels together, including voice, video, call centers and conferencing. And SIP trunks are the technology that allows your UC infrastructure to communicate with the outside world beyond the corporate network. Now there is an urgency around SIP trunk adoption, because carriers around the world are turning off their ISDN networks and switching customers to SIP trunks. Most European providers are targeting 2018 to switch off ISDN. We believe that taking a strategic approach to SIP adoption allows you to gain the most benefit from the technology, which means that is important to get ahead of the curve. Why you should move to SIP now Cost savings: depending on your existing environment, SIP can generate cost savings of up to 50% on your telephony spend. Supports any device: SIP enables your employees to collaborate anywhere regardless of their device or current network access. Cloud integration: SIP provides seamless integration into SaaS applications hosted in your provider s data center. This allows you to extend your communications into the cloud such as click-to-call from CRM apps. The deciding factor All of the above benefits are major drivers for organizations moving to SIP trunks, but probably the biggest is the ability to consolidate and centralize all of your multiple ISDN circuits for voice. For a multinational organization this could be a significant reduction in the number of service providers and complexity. You no longer need a PBX layer and multiple ISDN service providers for local dial-in, international calls and resiliency on each site. Simplification: centralization limits hardware deployment and maintenance costs. In addition, SIP carries all communication channels without the need for additional infrastructure. Scalability and flexibility: unlike ISDN which is purchased in 30 channel blocks, SIP can simply be scaled up or down to meet your business needs. Resiliency and disaster recovery planning: SIP trunks can load-balance traffic across an organization, so trunks can easily be switched across sites if there is a disruption. 3 SIP trunking: at the heart of your unified communications digital transformation Once you have SIP trunking in place, you can really start to leverage the complete benefits of a UC strategy, which is a key element of digital transformation. Contact center: Consolidate multiple ISDN circuits through a single SIP trunk and get all the numbers you need through a single service provider. Case study: JTI Digital transformation is key for JTI, the international arm of Japan Tobacco, one of the world s largest tobacco manufacturers. Orange delivers and operates cutting edge technologies across all geographies supporting JTI s transformation and competitiveness in the 120 countries in which it operates. One of the major parts of its change plans was the move from traditional IP telephony to Microsoft Lync Unified Communications (UC) including Enterprise Voice, supported by Orange s redundant MPLS network worldwide. At the company s new headquarters in Switzerland, this strategy involved replacing all its ISDN lines and transferring to full unplugged SIP. In the migration to SIP, 2,000 DIDs were ported from Swisscom in a step by step approach. It was a large scale move, but the porting by Orange Business Services went very smoothly and there was only a few minutes disruption for users and at a time when traffic was very low. JTI added 1,000 new DIDs and has full SIP compliancy, including analog device, fax and CLI (call forward to mobile) transparency. 3 Orange Business Services webinar: April 21, 2016
4 Making it happen: Moving to SIP trunking The move to SIP trunking is typically triggered by a compelling event such as a network upgrade, UC refresh or reassessing voice contracts. Of course, ISDN end of life also pushes the move to the top of the agenda, although we recommend you do not wait this long. In advance of the project, the following steps will help to ensure a smooth and efficient migration to SIP trunks 1. Full inventory You need to know what you want to migrate, how many users, current DID ranges, carrier name and capacity per site. This might sound straightforward, but allow time to collect this information as it is key to a smooth migration. 2. Design choice There is no standard design because every company is unique. You need to consider a range of criteria including: i. Connectivity: MPLS, hybrid, Internet and 4G. What is already in place and what level of upgrades are required? Any upgrades can also benefit your existing applications. ii. UC design: for example, how many session border controllers (SBC) do you require and where should they be located? vi. Capacity: procure exactly the capacity you need per site with the additional granularity provided by SIP trunking. vii.phased migration: minimize risk by taking a phased approach to migration, rather than a big band. This also allows you to port all of your numbers to your new infrastructure in good time. 3. Budget estimation Calculate the financial impact and possible savings of moving to SIP. The project can help fund unified communications transformation for example. Savings are made in usage, design and circuit costs. Once the project has a go-ahead, our team can help you migrate each site over at pace that suits you. We suggest that migration for each site has the following six steps: design validation, quotation, ordering, planning, migration and observation. iii. Migration planning: this depends on where you stand on your sites, your UC strategy and planned ISDN end of life by your carrier. But careful project planning is paramount. iv. Redundancy: we can configure a primary and secondary trunk connected to two different data centers. v. Standardization: use site design templates to reduce complexity, accelerate migration and simplify operations. 4 Orange Business Services webinar: April 21, 2016
5 Key takeaways 1. Optimize: voice and data convergence Optimize your infrastructure by converging voice and data networks. Don t replicate the same design as ISDN with a local SIP trunk providing a separate dedicated voice access for every site. In addition, there is no need for a session border controller (SBC) on every site only the major ones. 2. Dependencies: consider SIP trunking with the network and UC The level of savings and scale of project depends on your UC and network maturity. 3. Smooth migration For a problem-free migration, don t aim for a big approach. Instead look to migrate on a site-by-site basis. This also allows you to ensure number portability from your existing telephony provider. 4. Standardization Look to set up a number of different site templates to cut down complexity in migration and reduce risk. 5. Project planning Build a project plan for each site migration.
