2 an extraordinary event Now in its 4 th season, Spinal Chord is a unique event bringing together Vancouver s Arts & Science communities. The 2012 Gala will once again be hosted in the acoustically superb atrium of the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre. This interdisciplinary event celebrates the achievements and objectives of two internationally recognized organizations, each working in a very different field. This annual event gives us the opportunity to come together and identify common ground and shared perspectives in our varied pursuits. With the exception of specific cash donations, all funds generated by this event are split equally between both organizations. 4 By sponsoring Spinal Chord on November 3 rd, 2012, you will be supporting two internationally celebrated organizations: ICORD (International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries) is a world leading health research centre focused on spinal cord injury. From the labbased cellular level of understanding injury to rehabilitation and recovery, our researchers are dedicated to the development and translation of more effective strategies to promote prevention, functional recovery, and improved quality of life after spinal cord injury. Located at Vancouver General Hospital in the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre, ICORD is supported by UBC Faculty of Medicine and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute. Vancouver Cantata Singers was founded in 1957, and has become one of Canada s preeminent choral ensembles. VCS has been awarded the Canada Council s top prize in choral singing, the Healy Willan Grand Prize, more than any other choir in the country. Under the current artistic leadership of Eric Hannan, VCS has become known for technical virtuosity, fine blend and exceptionally high performance standards encompassing 500 years of choral repertoire. The choir also commissions new works from critically acclaimed composers which have led to extremely successful and innovative collaborations with regional and international artists and ensembles.
