2 About the Palliative Medicine and Symposium The Palliative Medicine and Symposium focuses on providing an intensive multidisciplinary review of cutting-edge topics in the rapidly developing field of palliative medicine and supportive oncology. This year the Machaskee Lecture will feature Dr. Gabriel Leger speaking on Dementia: Does Differential Matter? Together, we will explore potential solutions to improve the quality of care of patients with chronic illnesses through palliative and supportive oncology therapies. We will examine opioid addiction in the cancer patient with concurrent chronic non-malignant pain, learning to incorporate less commonly used opioids into clinical practice. Parallel workshops and sessions are being offered with a focus on supportive oncology and key palliative medicine topics: teaching communication skills, wound care, and integrating mid-level providers in palliative medicine and hospice. Join us for the CME-certified Palliative Medicine and 2014 Symposium for these outstanding presentations. Opportunity for interaction with quality leaders in the field and great take home scenarios for immediate use in clinical practices. Past Attendee Who Should Attend Practitioners and health care professionals who seek to learn the latest developments in palliative medicine and supportive oncology, including hematologists/oncologists, neurologists, pediatricians, family practice physicians, internal medicine physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, nurses, social workers, pharmacists and hospice care providers. Objectives After completing this activity, you will be able to do the following: Describe how to differentiate dementia types, identify prognostic indicators, and implement current management strategies; Discuss use of opioids to treat chronic pain; Assess risks and create a management plan for addicts with cancer pain; Integrate palliative medicine into intensive care units; Manage palliative medicine in pediatric patients; Discuss management of nonpain symptoms in palliative medicine; Incorporate less commonly used opioids into clinical practice; Describe the challenges involved in palliative medicine for oncology patients; List the criteria recognized as defining quality palliative outcomes.
