6 Target Audience Primary Care Providers (physicians, nurses, ARNP s, PA s, etc.) Addiction Medicine Providers Chemical Dependency Counselors Conference Goal Psychiatrists/Mental Health Providers Any healthcare provider interested in the Addiction Medicine field The 16 th Annual Fundamentals of Addiction Medicine course is designed to enhance the skills and performance of those providers who treat patients with addictions to chemicals (i.e., alcohol, drugs). The sessions will focus on the role of the provider in not only helping to prevent further addiction but appropriately treating patients with addictions. Participants will discuss opioid prescribing, treating pain in patients with addition, caring for the pregnant patient with addiction, neonatal drug withdrawal, effective interventions, medication assisted treatment and comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and substance abuse. Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this seminar, attendees will be able to: discuss the recent local, regional, and national trends involving the availability and use of illicit drugs. describe the decision making on the initiation, maintenance, and discontinuation of opioids for chronic pain. review the neurobiological factors that influence pain in patients with a history of addiction. recognize several neurocognitive differences in the brain between early onset and later onset users of marijuana. discuss the impacts of substance use in pregnant patients and coordinate obstetrical and recovery treatment. list several gaps in the knowledge of treatment and outcomes in infants with signs of opiate/opioid withdrawal. outline practical parenting strategies to help with typical sleep, feeding, and behavioral issues in FASD. describe several strategies to modify substance abuse treatment for patients with FASD. review current treatment modalities for ADHD in patients with substance use disorders. discuss the clinical use of FDA approved pharmacotherapies for alcohol use disorder. recognize the uses of buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone for opioid use disorder. analyze differences in patients who are at risk for suicide versus accidental overdose. review the current status of evidence-based treatments for methamphetamine dependence. describe the origin and use of acupuncture for detoxification.
