4 Purpse and Gals This white paper describes a wrking example f hw t back up EMC ViPR SRM vapp-based deplyments using the Symantec NetBackup TM While this dcument specifically cvers ViPR SRM 1-VM and 4-VM vapp deplyments, the guidelines apply t larger deplyments as well. Prerequisites Symantec NetBackup is installed. NetBackup Master and Media Servers shuld be reachable frm the SRM vapp appliances. Reverse DNS lkup shuld wrk between all hsts participating in backup and restre. The Media Server shuld have enugh space t hld backup images. Space can be allcated based n backup frequency and the type f backup plicy cnfigured. The NetBackup Client and SYMCquiesce utilities shuld be installed n the target backup hsts. Refer t the Symantec NetBackup fr VMware Administratr's Guide Release 7.6. Make sure the NetBackup daemn prcesses are running n all assciated hsts. Firewalls shuld be turned ff t avid cnnectin errrs. All firewall prts between the NetBackup prcesses n backup client/server shuld be cnfigured t ensure cnnectivity. If yu experience prblems cnfiguring the firewalls, turn them ff. Refer t NetBackup dcumentatin fr mre infrmatin: ViPR SRM Pre-Backup Checks D the fllwing: Verify and dcument the current envirnment befre starting the backup prcess. Refer t EMC dcumentatin n managing ViPR SRM system health fr details abut verifying the health f yur system. Lk fr blank reprts and graphs. Add vcenter Details Add vcenter credentials t NetBackup t allw discvery f the VMs. Prper privileges are required fr perfrming backup and restre using vcenter. Adding vcenter Details 1. Frm the NetBackup admin cnsle, navigate t Media and Device Management Credentials Virtual Machine Server. 2. Right click and select New. Fill in the required details. Select Virtual Machine Server type as VMware Virtual Center Server. Refer t the fllwing Symantec article fr mre infrmatin: 4

5 SRM vapp Image Backup 1-VM vapp Image Backup Create Backup Plicies Fllw these instructins t create image backup plicies fr the ViPR SRM 1-VM vapp. 1. In the NetBackup Administratin Cnsle, in the left pane, click NetBackup Management. 2. In the right pane, right-click Plicies and select New Plicy. Prvide a name fr the plicy, and select Use Plicy Cnfiguratin Wizard. 3. On the Create a Backup Plicy fr windw, select VMWare and Hyper-V. 4. On the Select Client windw, select Virtual Machine type as VMware. 5. Frm Snapsht ptins page, select the Plicy Strage and Plicy Vlume Pl. 6. Supply the ptins fr the plicy shwn in the fllwing screen. 5

6 Select the VMware backup hst based n the current system cnfiguratin. Uncheck Exclude deleted blcks if checked. VMware backups with the Exclude unused and deleted blcks ptin enabled may be slw, especially if the virtual machine being backed up has fragmented free space r a large number f very small files. Restres f these backups may als be very slw. Althugh enabling this ptin has n impact n the successful backup and restre f ViPR SRM vapps, avid it due t perfrmance cnstraints. Exclude swap and paging files. While backup and restre with paging files wrks prperly n ViPR SRM vapps, avid this ptin due t perfrmance cnstraints. Select the Transprt Mdes depending upn the current cnfiguratin. ViPR SRM vapps backup/restre wrks with bth the SAN and HOTADD mdes. Yu can select bth; NetBackup tries the secnd mde if fails t cnnect with the first. Keep the rest f the ptins as shwn in the abve screen sht. Yu can discver and add the vapps manually r thrugh a query. If it is a small-scale envirnment r the lcatin f VMs is well knwn, then selectin can be dne manually. Otherwise create a query t find the VMs and select them frm the search results. 7. Select the type f backup t be perfrmed. All types f backup are supprted fr SRM VMs. EMC recmmends weekly full backups cmbined with daily incremental differential backups. The type f incremental backup shuld be based upn yur requirements. The advantage f an incremental differential backup is that it takes less time t restre. 6

7 8. Next, schedule the frequency f backup. The frequency f backup and retentin perid depends n the business requirement and assciated risk. Verify the plicy terms, and a prcess is created t trigger the backup at the scheduled intervals. 4-VM vapp Image Backup Create Backup Plicies Fllw the instructins t create image backup plicies fr the ViPR SRM 4-VM vapps. 1. Cmplete steps 1 thrugh 5 frm the 1-vApp VM prcedure. 2. Add all VMs in the vapp using a query. Frm the virtual machine selectin drpdwn, select autmatically thrugh query. Cnfirm the selectin and in the next windw select the Master Server fr perfrming the VM selectin. 3. A query selectin windw pens. Set the Field t vapp and fill in the ther query building attributes apprpriately. 7

8 4. If yu re-run the query at a future time, set the Reuse VM selectin query results fr field accrding t yur requirements. 5. Test the query t verify that all VMs under the selected vapp have been included successfully. Yu can discver and add the VMs in the vapp manually as well. 8

9 6. Next, schedule the frequency f backup. The frequency f backup and retentin perid depends n the business requirement and assciated risk. SRM vapp File Backup Prerequisite The NetBackup client sftware must be installed n the hsts t be backed up. Refer t the apprpriate versin f the Symantec NetBackup Installatin Guide fr detailed instructins. Fr example, the Symantec NetBackup 7.6 Installatin Guide can be dwnladed frm: 1 VM vapp File Backup Create Backup Plicies Fllw the instructins t create file backup plicies fr ViPR SRM single VM. 1. Launch Plicy Creatin frm the NetBackup Administratin Cnsle and name the plicy. 2. On the next windw create a backup plicy fr File system, database, and applicatin. 3. On the next windw select the Plicy type as Standard and click Next. 4. Add the name f the client and click Next. The OS type is determined autmatically. 5. On the Files screen, add the specific directries/files fr backup r select Backup all lcal drives, based n the requirement. Fr SRM VMs, back up all lcal drives. 9

10 6. On the Backup Types dialg, select Full Backup, Incremental Backup, and Differential. The user has an ptin t initiate the backup by selecting the User Backup ptin. 7. Next, schedule the frequency f backups based n yur business requirements. Verify the plicy terms, and a prcess is created t trigger the backup at scheduled intervals. 10

11 4-VM vapp File Backup Create Backup Plicies Fllw the instructins t create file backup plicies fr ViPR SRM 4-VM vapp. 1. Launch Plicy Creatin frm the NetBackup Administratin Cnsle and name the plicy. 2. On the next windw create a backup plicy fr File system, database, and applicatin. 3. On the next windw select the Plicy type as Standard and click Next. 4. Yu can add multiple clients n the Client List dialg and all backup drives added in are included fr these clients. 11

12 5. On the Files screen, add the specific directries/files fr backup r select Backup all lcal drives, based n the requirement. Fr SRM VMs, back up all lcal drives. 6. On the Backup Types dialg, select Full Backup, Incremental Backup, and Differential. The user has an ptin t initiate the backup by selecting the User Backup ptin. 7. Next, schedule the frequency f backups based n yur business requirements. Verify the plicy terms, and a prcess is created t trigger the backup at scheduled intervals. 12

13 Initiate Manual Backup Yu can initiate the backup manually, apart frm the scheduled backup created during plicy creatin. Select the plicy frm the Plicies tree in the NetBackup Administratin Cnsle, right click and select manual backup. Select the type f backup and VMs accrding t the plicy setup and initiate the backup. Mnitr the prgress using the Activity Mnitr. This displays the type f backup, start time, end time, hw much data has been backed up, and s n. 13

14 Mnitr any issues encuntered during the backup using the Prblems windw, where yu can generate reprts based n a filter. SRM vapp Image Restre The VM image restre prcedure is essentially the same fr 1-VM vapps and 4-VM vapps, differing nly when yu are restring images t an alternate destinatin. Cmplete the prcedure belw t start the prcess f restring images. Image Restre fr Bth 1-VM and 4-VM vapps 1. Launch the NetBackup Backup, Archive, and Restre cnsle frm the Tlbar menu (it is als available via the Administratin Cnsle). 2. Navigate t File Specify NetBackup Machine and Plicy Type. a. In the Plicy dialg, select the Master Server fr Server t use fr backup and restres. b. Search/add VM clients and set the targeted VM fr the restre as Surce client fr restres (r virtual client fr backup). c. Make the destinatin client the same as the surce client. d. Set the Plicy Type fr restres t VMware. e. Chse a date and time range t get the images frm the image repsitry and click OK. 14

15 3. Navigate t File Select files and flders t Restre frm Virtual Machine Backup. 4. Select the image t restre and select Actin Restre Yu can restre the image t the same lcatin r select an alternate lcatin. The SRM vapp can be restred selecting any f the ptins. Cntinue with Recvery Destinatin. Recvery Destinatin Yu can restre t the riginal lcatin r t an alternate lcatin. The fllwing list identifies the advantage and disadvantages f each methd. Original Lcatin Advantages 15

16 The recvery can be dne withut making any changes t the image prperties. The restred SRM vapp image des nt lse its IP cnfiguratin and alng with APG services everything cmes up smthly. The data cllectin als wrks prperly and n user interventin is required nce restred. Disadvantages The restred images delete the existing SRM vapp frm vcenter. Deleting the vapp frm vcenter remves all assciated snapshts. Alternate Lcatin Advantages Many custmizatins are allwed, including placing the VM in an entirely different envirnment. Yu can change the ESX server, display name, resurce pl, datastre, r flder name. Be careful while making changes here, The resurces shuld be available and need t be under ne umbrella (fr example. yu cannt assign an ESX server that has n cnnectin t the specified datastre). Disadvantages The IP cnfiguratin is lst. Assigning a different IP address and hst name is nt allwed because the SlutinPacks were registered with the respective hst names and IP address, and d nt wrk with a different IP cnfiguratin. Restre t Original Lcatin This prcedure cntinues the Image Restre fr bth 1-VM and 4-VM vapps prcedure. The prcedure is the same fr bth 1-VM and 4-VM vapps. 1. On the Recvery Destinatin dialg, set Recvery Virtual Machine t t Original lcatin and click Next. 16

17 2. Click Next n the Recvery Optins dialg. Recvering t the riginal lcatin keeps all VM settings intact and maintains the default settings. 17

18 3. Set the Virtual Machine Optins accrding t the screen belw. Keep the riginal prvisining chice and retain the riginal hardware versin and BIOS UUID. Overwrite the existing virtual machine must be enabled in case the VM is already in place because creating tw VMs with the same name in same vcenter is nt allwed. Check Pwer n the virtual machine after recvery. Click Next. 4. On the Perfrm Recvery dialg, select Run Pre-recvery Check. When the pre-recvery check cmpletes successfully, select Start Recvery. 18

19 5. After starting the restre, a pp-up appears ffering t view the prgress. Alternately yu may select View Status frm the Restre Cnsle t watch the restre prgress. Restre t an Alternate Lcatin This prcedure cntinues the Image Restre fr bth 1-VM and 4-VM vapps prcedure. While this prcedure applies t bth 1-VM and 4-VM vapps, nte the differences in step On the Recvery Destinatin dialg, set Recvery Virtual Machine t t Alternate lcatin and click Next. 2. On the Recvery Optins dialg, set the Transprt mdes t san r htadd (r select bth). D nt use nbd and nbdssl t avid the perfrmance verhead fr data manipulatin. Change the display name f the VM if the restre will be placed in the same lcatin as the riginal VM. Yu can change the datastre and ther fields as well. The restre prcedure fr a 4-VM vapp is the same the prcedures fr a 1-VM vapp. Simply chse the Resurce pl/vapp fr the respective VM. The snapsht belw shws hw t specify the VM t restre under a specific vapp. 19

20 3. On the Virtual Machine Optins dialg, select Restre BIOS UUID, Pwer n VM after recvery, Retain riginal hardware, and Original prvisining. Keep the ther ptins unselected. 20

21 4. On the Strage Destinatin dialg, change the datastre if required and click Next. 5. Make sure that Retain the riginal Netwrk cnfiguratin is selected n the Netwrk Cnnectins dialg and click Next. 6. On the Perfrm Recvery dialg, select Run Pre-recvery Check. When the pre-recvery check cmpletes successfully, select Start Recvery. 21

22 7. After starting the restre, a pp-up appears ffering t shw the prgress. Alternately yu can select View Status frm the Restre Cnsle t watch the restre prgress. SRM vapp File Restre 1-VM vapp File Restre 1. Launch the NetBackup Backup, Archive, and Restre cnsle. Yu can als launch this frm the Tlbar menu f the Administratin Cnsle. 2. Navigate t File Specify NetBackup Machine and Plicy Type. 3. In the Plicy dialg, select the Master Server fr Server t use fr backup and restres. 4. 23 7. Chse a date and time range t see the available images in the image repsitry and click OK. 8. Navigate t File Select files and flders t Restre frm Nrmal Backup. 9. Select the files t restre. Directries are listed with the date and time f the backup. Select Actin Restre 23

24 10. Maintain the settings n the Restre Marked Files dialg, and click Start Restre t initiate restre. 4-VM vapp File Restre The 4-VM vapp file restre prcedure is the same as the 1-VM vapp prcedure. Restre each VM individually. Verify Operatinal Status D the fllwing: Ensure that the VIPR SRM VM launches successfully with all f the APG services in a running state. Lk fr brken links.
