1 Executive Director for San Diego Non Profit Physician Advocates for Veterans (PAVE) Founded in 2012 and incorporated as a Section 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable organization in Revenues: $120,000 projected for 2016 and a 2017 expected annual budget of $250,000- $500,000. Time Commitment: Initially 50% time. With growth of PAVE and experience of the candidate, it is expected the position will become full time. Anticipated Start Date: April 1, 2016 PAVE s Mission: PAVE s volunteer retired physicians assist San Diego s Veterans in getting better health care by improving their understanding of their medical diagnoses and make informed decisions among their health care options. Our Physician Advocates (PA) make this happen when we pair them one-on-one with our veteran clients to help them navigate their complex and often confusing issues and healthcare systems. 2 Position Description: General: Report to the President and Board of Directors. Have overall strategic and operational responsibility for PAVE s budget and staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission. Develop deep knowledge of PAVE, the veteran healthcare field, our core program, operations, budgeting and business plans. Leadership & Management: Lead in a manner that supports PAVE s mission. Engage and energize PAVE s volunteers, board members, partnering organizations, and donors. Identify and strengthen Board governance and development issues. Seek Board involvement in decisions, fundraising, and policy matters. Provide information required for Board to make fact-based decisions. Serve as ex-officio of each PAVE committee. Build Board involvement with strategic direction for ongoing local operations as well as for a potential national rollout. Lead, develop, and retain PAVE s management/administrative teams. Ensure effective systems to track progress, evaluate program components and effectively communicate these results to the Board, donors, and other constituents. Report to and work with the President and Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising and to increase the overall visibility of PAVE throughout the State. 3 Financial Performance and Viability: Responsible for fiscal integrity and management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position. Plan annual budget and operate within those projections. Along with president and Board of Directors lead fundraising efforts and development other necessary resources. Communication and Outreach: Deepen and refine all aspects of communications from website presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand. Write original content for correspondence, program development, website content, media communications/press releases to promote public arena interest in PAVE functions and accomplishments. Develop and implement marketing strategies and related materials Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities Research and develop grant opportunities and work with a grant writing team. Serve as a PAVE spokesperson to the organization s constituents, the media and the general public. Establish and maintain relationships with various veteran-serving organizations throughout the region and state and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance PAVE s Mission. Understand the Veterans Administration healthcare and other healthcare systems delivering care to San Diego County s veterans. 3

4 Planning and New Business: Participate in facilitating PAVE s possible national expansion. Be an external local and national presence that communicates program results with an emphasis on the successes of the local program as a model for regional / national replication. Qualifications: The ED will be thoroughly committed to improving the lives of our military veterans and PAVE s mission to help them. Candidates must have proven leadership, coaching, and organizational management skills. Demonstrable experience and other qualifications include: BA/BS and/or an advanced degree, ideally an MBA Senior management experience Ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized plans that have taken an organization to the next stage of strategic growth. Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation. Record of effectively leading the regional and/or national scaling of a performance- and outcomes-based organization. Past success working with a Board of Directors/Executive Committees with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships. Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the 4

5 ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures. Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Strong computer literacy with MS Office: Word, Power Point, and Excel Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and selfdirected. Have an understanding of military culture and veteran organizations as they relate to veteran well-being and healthcare issues. With the President oversee organization of Board and committee meetings. Oversee marketing and other communications efforts. Review and approve contracts for services. Establish employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the nonprofit. Military and healthcare management experience, particularly in senior positions is a positive. Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience and other qualifications.
