3 3 YOUTH RULES Fine Arts, Photography & Creative Writing Please read competition guidelines: Changes are made each year. 1) Eligibility: a) Open to residents aged 9-17 years as of January 1 st. Must be a resident of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, or Solano County. b) The exhibitor must home prepare all entries within one year of the opening date of the fair. Items that have been shown at previous Alameda County Fairs are not eligible and will be disqualified. c) The Fair Association reserves the right to refuse any entry or to refuse to display any entry considered not to be in the best interest of the Fair. d) No entry will be accepted where an exhibitor prescribes conditions under which they will exhibit. 2) Entry Limits: a) Please note all division and class limits. b) All entries will be accepted unless the exhibitor is otherwise notified c) Entry fees will not be refunded. 3) Presentation: a) The Fair will provide an exhibit tag. Please enter with the exhibitor s name as you wish it to appear. b) Items that are soiled or showing wear will not be accepted or displayed. 4) Handling: a) Greatest care will be exercised in handling exhibits, but the Fair Management, Alameda County Fair Association, and the County of Alameda will not be held liable for loss, theft or damage of any kind from any cause. Submission of any work constitutes an agreement to this effect. b) No one but the judges and departmental personnel will be allowed to handle exhibits. 5) Display: a) Exhibits are displayed to interest the public and showcase the exhibits. The Alameda County Fair assumes total design control over the presentation of the exhibit. b) Displays change every year. While entries will be secure, most items will be not displayed behind glass or in cases. c) All flat paper items must be mounted on card stock or matte board. d) Only canvas artwork may be framed and must be ready to hang with picture wire. e) Items may not be larger than 26 x 32 including frame. f) Creative writing should be submitted on 8 ½ x 11 paper in a page protector and is limited to 2 pages. g) Weight of entry is not to exceed 25 pounds without prior approval from entries@alamedacountyfair.com. 6) Judging: a) Entries are judged using the Danish System of Judging where exhibits are judged against a scorecard. There is the availability of multiple 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd Place and every entry will receive a ribbon. All 1 st place winners in a class will compete against each other for the Best of Class and all Best of Class within a division will then compete against each other for Best of Show. b) Exhibits are judged by age group as well as by group ( vs. Open vs. Organization). There is a Best of Show available for each classification and age group within the division. c) Qualified judges are selected by the Alameda County Fair. The decision of the judge is final. d) Judging results will not be given out by phone, mail, or . 7) Ribbons: a) Ribbons will be handed out at the time of entry pick up. When your exhibit tag indicates that a ribbon has been won, the ribbon is often not displayed any ribbons won will be waiting for you when you pick up your item. 8) Entry Pick-Up a) Exhibits may not be removed prior to the release day(s). b) Exhibits may be picked up by anyone who has your claim check. c) Exhibits not picked up on the release day(s) will be retained at the Exhibit Office at the owner s risk. There is a storage fee per exhibitor. The Fair Association will not be responsible for unclaimed exhibits and may dispose of remaining items at the start of the Labor Day Weekend. 9) Sponsored Awards: a) Sponsored awards for all categories can be found on the youth sponsored awards page. Sponsored awards are chosen from eligible entries in the award categories. No special entry is required. b) Sponsored Awards are secured in good faith. The Alameda County Fair Association cannot guarantee the payment of sponsored awards. c) Awards will be handed out at the & Creative Living Awards ceremony. Award winners will be notified prior to the ceremony. 10) Definitions: a) (Members of an Alameda County Club currently enrolled in this project). b) (Entries made by youth independent of or other youth organizations). c) Organizations (Scouts, YMCA, AWANA, etc.)

DIVISION Description Poems Short Stories Any (song lyrics, interview with character from history, literature, or movies, etc.) Entries must have been home prepared within 1 year of the opening date of the fair. All Creative Writing is limited to 2 pages and must be submitted in 8 ½ X 11 page protectors with 3-hole punch. All entries must be suitable for a family fair. For interview with a character from history, literature, or movie identify your source in the entry description as well as in your interview. Write this in interview form (question and answer). Limit 2 pages submitted in 8 ½ X 11 page protectors with 3-hole punch. To enter in our new photo journalism category, please see the photography pages in this section. DIVISION Description Drawing Pencil Drawing Colored Pencil Drawing Media Painting Acrylic/Oil Painting Watercolor Pastel Mixed Media Any (graphic art, scratch art, etc.) Flat art only. Enter 3-D art exhibits under Arts/Crafts. All flat paper items must be mounted on card stock or matte board. Exhibitor s name and phone number must be on the back. (Do not mount on corrugated cardboard or foam board.) Items not backed by card stock or matte board may need to be stapled through the actual artwork. Professional matting is NOT required. Items may not be larger than 26 x 32 including any frame. Only canvas artwork may be framed. It must be ready to hang with picture wire only. Please ensure that there are no nails protruding through the back of items hung with picture wire. Place nails on inside frame of canvas to hang picture wire. Spray adhesives, rubber cement, and masking tape do not reliably hold. Use permanent adhesive only. Prints may not be in more than 1 class. Duplicate prints will be disqualified. No frames. Photos must be mounted on matte or poster board. Professional matting is NOT required. Spray adhesive and rubber cement do not hold. Use dry mount or permanent adhesive only. Only photos in the enhanced class may have been enhanced or altered. There are two different groups of photography entries. One is for photos that the exhibitor prints and delivers to the fair mounted on matte board. The second is for photos that the exhibitor enters digitally (no later than 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 21 st ) and will be displayed on a digital picture frame during the fair.

7 7 DIVISION 1533 Printed Photographs PHOTOGRAPHY Print out an 8 x 10 photo and mount it on 11 x 14 matte board. Create your poster on white 9 x 12 to 11 x 17 paper using chalk, watercolor, pencil, markers, etc. Limit: 1 per exhibitor Entries will be judged on Appearance, Creativity, Workmanship, Difficulty Factor, and representation of fair theme. Competition is judged using the American System of Judging where there is only one 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place in each class.

What new food, activity or entry category would you like to see at a future fair? Contest open to exhibitors 9 years and over as of January 1 st. Create your entry on white 9 x 12 to 11 x 17 paper using chalk, watercolor, pencil, markers, etc. Entry must include an illustration of your idea as well as a written explanation of your idea. Limit: 1 per exhibitor Entries will be judged on Appearance, Creativity, Difficulty Factor, Originality, and representation of fair theme. Competition is judged using the American System of Judging where there is only one 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place in each class. Cash Prizes Per Class: 1 st Place: $ nd Place: $ rd Place: $4.00

11 11 Entry Registration Deadlines: Paper April 27 th Online June 22 nd CELL PHONE PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT Saturday, June 25 th 3:00 p.m. must be 9 old to be eligible. Limit 2 Entries Per Exhibitor At check-in, contestants will receive their scavenger hunt list. Contestants will have one hour to take 10 photos of the things on the list on the fairgrounds using their cell phone. After one hour, contestants will return to the contest site for judging. We will be using Instagram for photo judging. Exhibitors must have an Instagram account to participate. Additional instructions including the hashtag will be given prior to the contest. Photo content must support the fair s family atmosphere. Photos with objectionable content will be disqualified. Photos will be judged on subject and composition. Bonus points may be awarded for originality, impact and/or superior photo quality. Exhibitors will receive a detailed on June 23 rd with specific instructions. Exhibitor RSVP is required by ing entries@alamedacountyfair.com between 24 & 72 hours prior to the start of the contest. 13 13 STORYBOOK CHARACTER CONTEST Saturday June 18 th 3:00 p.m. Do you like to read? Have you sometimes wanted to be your favorite storybook character? Here s your chance! Be prepared to meet the judges and talk about your favorite storybook character. Dress the part and have a great time! Must be 5-17 years old by January 1 st to enter. Costume must represent character and time period. Costume items do NOT need to be handmade. Character and literary source must be identified when entering Judging will be in 2 parts: o o Appearance and creativity of costume Ability to talk and answer questions about the character Participants years old must also bring a paragraph describing why they chose that character Characters must represent the family atmosphere of the fair Exhibitors will receive a detailed on June 16 th with specific instructions.
