1 Overview 2015 Houston Money Week Art Contest: Smarter Texans Save Instruction and Guidelines Sponsored by Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Texas Council on Economic Education with special thanks to Aaron Gladstone Awards Ceremony To Be Held Thursday, April 9, 2015 Sponsored by The University of Houston Bauer College Financial Symposium Texas Council on Economic Education (TCEE) will sponsor an art contest for Houston area schools. The competition is in conjunction with the UH Bauer College Financial Symposium that is part of Houston Money Week The deadline for entering the artwork is March 26, 2015 at 4:30 pm. The awards ceremony will be held at the University of Houston on Thursday, April 9, 2015 in the evening. The awards ceremony is sponsored by the University of Houston, Bauer College of Business. Using the rubric below for a campus based competition, each school may enter their top 10 pieces of art from each grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12) that address the theme, Smarter Texans Save. Kindergarten through grade 12 students who live in the greater Houston metropolitan area are eligible to enter the art competition. Twelve winning students will have their artwork included in a calendar that will be distributed throughout the Houston area. Please call or tcee@economicstexas.org if you have questions. Deadline Date and Requirements To be eligible for the art contest, the completed forms must be submitted along with the artwork. Page 6: Campus Art Registration Affidavit to be completed by the sponsoring educator Page 7: Student Art Registration Form to be completed by student or parent and requires necessary adult signatures Page 8: Art Contest Rubric: Smarter Texans Save to be completed by student or parent A sponsoring educator from the campus will need to MAIL in the student artwork to be received in the Texas Council on Economic Education office by March 26, 2015 by 4:30 pm. The top ten campus winning pieces of artwork per grade band from each campus need to be mailed and received by March 26, 2015 to the Texas Council on Economic Education Office. The mailing address is: Texas Council on Economic Education Attn: Catherine Rinhart 1801 Allen Parkway Houston, TX *Under NO circumstances will artwork be allowed for drop off at the Texas Council on Economic Education office. 1
2 Art Pick-up All artwork can be picked up at the University of Houston, on April 9, 2015, at the awards ceremony by the teacher, administrator or guardian of the artist. Those not attending the dinner will work with TCEE on return of the artwork. Art Criteria 1. All art must be the student s original work and should reflect an original design or concept of the student. No copies by hand, electronic or mechanical device of any previously published art will be allowed. No previously published photograph, or other previously published material, or copyright protected art, copyright protected photograph or other copyright protected material will be allowed. Magazine cut-outs, newspaper cut-outs or Internet clipart are also examples of what are not allowed. 2. Colored pens, pencils, crayons, paints, or a combination thereof, may be used. 3. Art is to be on an 8.5 x 11 paper, poster board or similar surface that is thin. Do not frame or mat the artwork. Foam board is not allowed. Wood and other similar substances are not acceptable. The artwork is to be two dimensional. 4. Content in the design must be school appropriate. (Example items that will not be accepted: art with profanity or of a lewd nature, any with satanic, violent, nude or suggestive portrayal). 5. The Student Art Registration Form with signatures must be attached securely to the top back of the artwork. The rubric needs to be affixed on the back with the student s information completed. 6. Questions may be addressed to Catherine Rinhart at or tcee@economicstexas.org. The following, without exception, will cause disqualification of artwork: Late art: it is the responsibility of the Campus Contest Coordinator to ensure that artwork arrives in time for judging. Please do not ask for extensions. Art that does not have Student Art Registration Form and Art Contest Rubric affixed on the back. Art containing commercial products. (The following are acceptable commercial products that can be used: colored pens, pencils, crayons, paints, or a combination thereof, acceptable 2 dimension surface for art). Examples of commercial products that are not allowed include clip art, magazine and newspaper pictures and text. Art containing photographs and artwork created by other persons or entities. Art that copy another person s artwork. 2
3 Art Assignment In keeping with the theme, Smarter Texans Save, students can use the concepts below to help guide their artwork. Grades K-2: What does it mean to save? How can you save for something you want? How does work help us provide for goods and services and save money? What are examples of ways you can earn, spend and save money? What are examples of how to be smart about spending and saving money? Why is it important to save money? What are the benefits of creating a budget to show the money you earn, spend, share and save? Grades 3-5: What are examples of ways of earning, spending, sharing and saving money? When dealing with scarcity of money and resources, how can consumers build a positive budget to be able to save? Why should consumers save money? What are ways for consumers to live within their budget? What are examples of ways to be smart about money to allow for saving? Why is it important to save money? What are the benefits of creating a budget that allows for saving? Grade 6-8: 9-12 What ideas do you have for saving for major purchases: college, car, special events? What are good money management behaviors that promote saving? How can you build a positive credit rating? What are ways you can be smart about saving? Why is it important to manage your money so you can save? What are the benefits of creating a budget that allows for saving, spending, and sharing? How and why do I need to save for my first year in college, trade school and/or emergencies? What are examples of positive money management behaviors that allow for saving? What are ideas on how to be smart about money to allow for saving? What is the importance of saving my money? How can I build a positive credit rating with savings as a component? 3
4 Judging The following criteria will be considered when artwork is judged. All artwork will be judged based on the expectations of artistic ability that is appropriate for that grade level. Art Contest Rubric: Smarter Texans Save Texas Council on Economic Education and University of Houston Bauer College Financial Symposium Concept Explanation Point Value Originality Is the concept or idea original? Does it reflect ideas that are appropriate for that age artist? Creativity Does the art show imagination? Is the portrayal of the subject matter unique? Is the interpretation innovative? Effective communication of theme Does the artwork effectively portray the theme of Smarter Texans Save? Does it convey one or more of the concepts included in the explanations of the theme for the age of the artist? 25 Visual appeal of the artwork Does the art draw people to the piece? While the art can be very expressive, is it also neat and are words legible? 25 Entries will be judged by a group of volunteers who understand the concepts involved in the theme, Smarter Texans Save. All entries will be invited along with their parents, teacher, and school administrator to attend the Financial Symposium Art Contest Awards Ceremony to be held on April 9, 2015, at the University of Houston Bauer College to receive their awards. 4
5 Awards The top three artwork artist winners for each grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12) will: 1. receive a check for: First Place: $100 Second Place: $75 Third Place: $50 2. be invited to the Financial Symposium Art Contest Awards Ceremony on April 9, 2015, at the Bauer School at the University of Houston. The winning student s teacher, campus administrator, and parents are also invited to attend. 3. have the artwork featured in the Houston Money Week Financial Symposium Calendar. 4. Receive a calendar with the winning artwork Campus Judging and Delivery of Artwork Each campus will be responsible for judging all student entries for that campus and determining the top ten winners for each grade band. The artwork will be judged using the attached rubric. Please make copies for the campus to use in judging the artwork. Although these completed campus judging forms will not be submitted to TCEE, it is recommended that the campus keep these in case there are questions asked. The campus will be responsible for mailing the following to be received no later than 4:30 pm on March 26 to TCEE at 1801 Allen Parkway, Houston, TX To be mailed are: 1. maximum of ten winning artworks entries per grade band (K to 2, 3 to 5, 6 to 8, 9 to 12) 2. Campus Art Registration Affidavit 3. Student Art Registration Form completed and affixed to the back of each piece of artwork 4. Art Contest Rubric affixed to the back of each piece of artwork Please tcee@economicstexas.org that your artwork is in the mail. TCEE will confirm that the artwork has been received. 6 Campus Art Registration Affidavit/Houston Money Week 2015 Campus Sponsor: please mail in with the artwork to be received by March 26, 2015 Prior to March 26, 2015, please conduct a campus competition and judging using the attached rubric to narrow the school winners to a maximum of ten students per grade band. Then, complete this form listing the top ten winners from each grade band for your campus. This form will be submitted along with the winning artwork from your campus. Judging will be based on the attached Smarter Texans Save rubric. 2. the ten campus winning pieces of art for each grade band will be mailed by a school representative and picked up after the contest concludes according to the contest guidelines. 3. photographs and photocopies of the entries will be taken by TCEE and will remain the property of University of Houston and the Texas Council on Economic Education. 4. while the artwork will be returned to the students, UH Bauer School and the Texas Council on Economic Education retain the right to reprint the art as calendars and in other formats (billboards, cards, marketing pieces, etc.). 5. the signature of the student, parent, teacher, and principal denotes their understanding of the rules and the admission of compliance of those rules. I understand that it is the responsibility of the campus representative to mail the artwork to be received by March 26, 2015, by the Texas Council on Economic Education office and retrieve the posters on April 9 at the University of Houston Financial Symposium Art Contest Awards Ceremony. The adult family member listed on the registration form can pick up his/her student s artwork on April 9, 2015 at the University of Houston Financial Symposium Art Contest Awards Ceremony. If the artwork cannot be picked up at this time, the school representative will make arrangements with TCEE for the return of the artwork. I understand that TCEE and UH Bauer School are not responsible for lost or stolen pieces of art. I also understand that TCEE and UH Bauer College have the right to display the image at University of Houston, and photograph and reproduce the image for future purposes. By signing the registration and permission form, I acknowledge receipt, understanding and following of the rules for the Smarter Texans Save Art Contest. I acknowledge that the artwork submitted by the student listed below follows all rules, instruction and guidelines for the Smarter Texans Save Art Contest.
