1 Lesson Plans - Early Birds Each week children will read appropriate books about the themes. Alongside each main project there will be a 3D component, either clay, paper maiche, or playdough. Free art at the easels weekly. Science experiments weekly based closely on themes. Week 1: June 27 - July 1 Theme: Art & Literature Project 1: Story Rocks, 2: WaterColor Book Pages, 3:Finger Puppets Supplies needed: 1) Medium sized flat rocks and acrylic paint. 2) Old Book pages, watercolor Description: The children will paint images inspired by the stories of the week onto the rocks, a keepsake of their time at camp. If child does not want to paint, they can cut pictures from magazines and glue to rocks. Children will then retell their stories. Project 2--Book Page. Children will sketch a picture on a page and then watercolor the image. We will mat the picture and use in the art show.

2 Project 3-Make finger puppets to tell a story using model magic, paint.

3 Week 2: July 4 - July 8 Theme: Art & Music Project name: 1: Americana Sculpture 2: Album Painting Supplies needed: Large Egg Cartons, paint Description: Children will discuss the symbolism of the American flag, importance of the colors, etc.they will then paint the egg carton. Project 2: Children will paint onto an album an image that they want to paint. Throughout the week we will explore different music genres by listening to a variety of music. Project 3: Children will paint freely to a variety of music. How does the music make you feel? Paint that feeling!

4 Week 3: July 11 - July 15 Theme: 3D Art Project name: 1:Relief Sculpture Supplies needed: Cardboard, scissors, paint, texture tools. Description: Children will discuss that art has dimension and discuss how we can make art that is not flat. Children will free paint carboard. When dry, the children will cut the cardboard into various shapes and then mount onto a separate paper to make a relief painting.

5 Project 2: Mosaic Material s 6x6 white tile, acrylic paint. Children will design their own mosaic using paint onto a tile. Week 4: July 18 - July 22 Theme: Art & Nature Project name: 1:Tide Pool Art 2:Tropical Fish Sculpture 3:Water Color Flowers Description: Children will draw a large oval on watercolor paper, cut oval out, and then with oil pastels, draw fish, etc that would be found in a tide pool. Then children will paint with blue water color over the tide pool. Final step is to add sand to the edges. Project 2--Tropical fish Children will sculpt a fish using a recycled plastic bottle and colorful tissue paper. Project 3--Water Color flowers Children will paint diffusing paper and shape into flowers.

6 Project 4-Recycled Bird feeder Children will recycle plastic jugs to create feeder for birds. Week 5: July 25 - July 29 Theme: Art & Films Project name: 1: Favorite Character Supplies needed: Canvas, pencils, paint, magazines Description: Children will discuss their favorite movies and characters. They will paint a background on a canvas, while it dries, they will pick out their favorite character from magazine/internet. We will print out a copy of the character and campers will modge podge the cut out onto the canvas. Embellish the characters. Project 2: Puppets Campers will pick from a variety of movie characters and create puppets using paper bags, pom poms, etc.

7 Week 6: August 1 - August 5 Theme: Art Ages Project name: 1: Cave drawing Supplies needed:clay, craft paper, chalk Description: Campers will travel the ages starting with cave paintings and symbols. Project 2: Modern Art Supplies: Bright paint, scissors, canvas. Campers will learn about Matisse and how he transformed art. They will create their own painting with scissors Paint large paper, allow to dry, then campers will cut out and glue onto canvas.

8 Project 3: Paint like Jackson Pollock. Campers will go outside and find their inner artists by splattering paint onto large papers. Week 7: August 8 - August 12 Theme: Art & Architecture Project name: Fairy Houses Supplies needed: Recylced milk containers, paint, felt.

9 Description: Campers will discuss how we look at things in the world. We will look at various architecture and how it looks in different forms. Campers will create their own fairy houses using their imaginations. They will paint milk containers and make their own furniture for their house. Project 2: Photography Campers will take photos from various points of view. For example, campers will take a photo of a toy/flower from the top, side, front. They will discuss the differences. We will make a story board from the pictures. Project 3: LEGO painting Campers will make a city or town with legos. They will use the legos to stamp out and make the buildings.

10 Week 8: August 15 - August 19 Theme: Art & Psychology Project name: 1: Model Magic sculpture 2: Color Theory Chicks Supplies needed: 1- model magic in colors. Description: Campers will learn first hand how colors mix. They will take 2 primary colors of model magic and mix them up! After the secondary color is made, they will sculpt it into a pinch pot. #2: Chicks! Using markers, campers with draw 3 chicks. They will pick 2 for a primary color each and then the 3rd chick will be painted using the 2 primary colors. #3 Free art--campers will be able to express themselves at the easel. They will make their own paint palette using paper plates and recycled material.

11 Week 9: August 22 - August 26 Theme: Art & Movement Project name: 1:Blow Painting Supplies needed: Watered down paint, cardstock, markers, and a drinking straw, hair dryer Description: Campers with move the paint either with a drinking straw or a hair dryer. First campers will sketch their favorite animal and then will spoon out watered down paint. Then they will blow the paint around to use as the animals hair. Mat painting for art show. Project #2 Shadow Sculpture

12 Supplies: TinFoil, the Sun, pencils. Description: Campers will create a 3D person out of tin foil. Then campers will go into the sun and make a shadow with their person. With teamwork, campers will sketch their person. Project 3: Campers will discuss how famous artists showed movement in their work. They will look at examples such as Vincent Van Gogh s Starry Night and recreate their own landscape using swirls to create movement.
