1 Southwest Christian Spanish 2 Syllabus I. Southwest Christian s mission statement: To challenge students to grow in knowing, loving, and serving God and others. II. Course Description: In Spanish 2 we will be building off of what you have already learned in your Spanish 1 class. We will be learning the two forms of past tense, the present progressive tense, and even a little bit of subjunctive. We will be studying ser and estar, refllexive verbs, stem changing verbs, holidays, and traveling. We will also learn about a variety of different cultures and through this gain a better understanding of how big God s world is (C 2). III. Bienvenidos a Español 2! Señora. Top janatop@swmch.org hours: 1st-4th period. IV. Philosophy I love speaking Spanish, teaching Spanish, and learning about the different cultures God has created. I believe that learning another language helps to benefit your learning in your own language and gives you a greater appreciation for others who are different from you (R 1 & C 3). I hope to provide a fun, organized, and interactive classroom that allows students to truly enjoy the process of learning a new language. V. Course Goals Skills: By the end of the year, students will have improved their speaking, writing, and comprehension of Spanish. They will know how to speak in several different tenses, have a full conversation, order at a Mexican restaurant, read a novel, memorize Bible verses, teach Spanish to children, and write complete papers all in Spanish (C 1). Knowledge: The students will show proficiency in Southwest MN Christian s Spanish Program Goals. This means they will be able to effectively communicate in Spanish by engaging in conversation and present information on various topics (C 1). They will also gain knowledge of different Spanish-speaking cultures including family and social life and religious beliefs (C 2). Third, the students will make connections to other subjects through their learning of another language (C 3). Fourth, they will be able to compare and contrast Spanish and English in areas such as grammar, vocabulary, and culture (C 4). Last, students will use their Spanish within the community during their years at Southwest, and be encouraged to develop their skills in the future by pursuing higher Spanish learning after graduation (C 5).

2 Values: Most importantly, students will recognize the value of learning another language in order to spread the Gospel and increase their knowledge of the many different cultures and people God has created (R 2 & R 3). They will learn that every individual, even in cultures very different from their own, is a child of God and deserves to be treated with love and respect (R 4). VI. Means of Assessment Carpetas: You will use the same large binder and tabbed dividers from last year. It will be organized similarly to what you had in your Spanish I class. There will be a section for: -bell work: have blank paper here to complete bell work everyday -each unit we cover: within each unit you will have a different colored paper for: vocab (yellow), grammar (green), culture (blue), projects (orange), and fun activities (purple) -note paper: a section of paper in the back to take notes or misc. information Participación: Everyday you have the chance to receive 1, 2, or 3 participation points for the day. Participation points include Bell work, behavior in class, and willingness to speak Spanish. Participation is extremely important in a Spanish class so it counts for 15% of your grade. Tarea: Your homework will be checked daily for completeness and occasionally handed in to be graded. You can receive a score from 0-5. If you forget your assignment, it may be handed in one day late and you can receive 3 points. Homework is 10% of your grade. Informacíon de Cultura: Each Unit we will study a new Spanish speaking country. You will be given cultural information that you will be tested on. You will also watch videos, listen to music, learn dances, and see pictures on the countries. Every unit I also try to bring in a guest speaker or Skype someone who has lived in the country we are studying. You will be writing reflection papers about these speakers and countries. Pruebas: You will have quizzes almost weekly and they will count for 25% of your grade. Quizzes are often on vocabulary or a certain grammar concept. You will have around 20 quizzes in a year. Proyectos: You will have four or five projects every semester and they will count for 15% of your grade. Below is a summary of the projects you are required to do in Spanish 2. A. Rutina Diaria: You will make a power point presentation describing your daily morning routine. You will be using vocab about the body and bathroom supplies.

3 You will also be practicing your use of reflexives. You will give the presentation to the class in Spanish. B. Vocaroo: You will have several vocaroo projects. Vocaroo is a website that allows you to record yourself speaking in Spanish. You will have to write up various conversations or papers in Spanish and then recite them on vocaroo so that you can be graded on pronunciation. C. Teaching Kindergarten: At the beginning of the year you will be split into groups to go to the Kindergarten class to teach Spanish. One Friday of every month a different group will present new Spanish vocabulary to the kindergarteners. You will get to practice teaching what you have learned in your previous years of Spanish and build a relationship with younger students who look up to you. D. Reflexive Video: You will be split into groups of 4 or 5 and will need to make a video explaining reflexive verbs and how they are used correctly. You may do a music video where you make up a song to help people remember correct grammar, or you may do a skit where you act out getting ready in the morning using correct grammar, or other creative ideas that you can come up with. This will be in Spanish and presented to the class to help everyone learn reflexive verbs. E. Bible Verse: You will memorize 4 verses from the Bible that are important to you in Spanish. You will then recite those verses in Spanish to me during class time. F. Holiday: You will select a celebration or holiday that takes place in a Spanish speaking country to study that t. You will explain how it is celebrated and other interesting facts about the holiday. You will then make a power point presentation with a t lest one slide completely in Spanish, and give a 3-5 minute presentation to the class on what you have learned. G. Prayer and verse: You will have to choose one of your favorite Bible verses and write it on the board in Spanish. You will then read it to the class in Spanish and English, explain why you like the verse in Spanish, and pray for the class in Spanish. H. Mi Propio Auto: You will be reading the novel Mi Propio Auto in class. The novel is completely in Spanish and will help in learning a lot of new grammar and vocabulary. At the end of the book you can choose between a board game, book jacket, collage, travel brochure, or electronic portfolio to give a summary of the book. I. Past Tense Paper: You will have to write a paper describing something fun you did last summer. The paper is written in past tense and allows you to practice all of the irregular past tense verbs you learn in class.

4 Examenes: You will have a few tests every quarter and a cumulative exam at the end of each semester. They will count for 35% of your grade. Review This test will include a review from what you learned in Spanish 1 including stemchanging verbs, irregular verbs, tener expressions, and verb meanings. Chapter 6 Review of Ser and estar, food vocabulary, adjectives with estar, and direct object pronouns. Affirmative commands. Chapter 7 Body parts vocabulary, reflexive verbs, daily routine vocabulary, colors, how you feel vocabulary, negative commands. Chapter 8 Clothes and shopping vocabulary, numbers, comparisons, quedar and parecer, past tense verbs. Chapter 9 Holiday and celebration vocabulary, reflexives in past tense, conocer, present progressive tense. Chapter 10 Taking a trip vocabulary, four types of irregular past tense verbs, imperfect tense, subjunctive. VII. Assessment Policy All assignments, projects, participation points, and tests are designed to show whether students have met the standards for the course, and any plagiarism, misbehavior, or partial work will not be accepted. Please do your own work and do not claim someone else s work as your own. Also, please do not use online translators to do your assignments. You will be able to complete the assignments given with vocabulary you have learned in class. Looking up one or two words on an online translator is acceptable, but writing a paragraph with google translate is not. If you choose to break the rules, you will: 1. Serve a detention. 2. Redo the assignment for 0 credit, if it is a test, paper or exam, they may receive ½ credit. 3. If cheating involves the use of computers or the internet, these privileges may be restricted. VIII.
