2 Supply Chain Managers - who needs them? Objective It s only about 10 years ago that people started to talk about Supply Chain Management as a management discipline. Even today, the definition of Supply Chain Management is still a subject of debate. To shed light on the issue, Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School has conducted a pioneering research project on the Supply Chain Organisation and the role of the Supply Chain Manager in European companies. This research project is set up within the Goodman Chair for Logistics Management. At Supply Chain Managers who needs them?, we will present the results of our large-scale European survey. This event offers an excellent opportunity for Supply Chain Managers to compare their profile and background with those of their peers both within and across industry barriers. Target Group This exclusive event is a must for executives with a career in Supply Chain Management, manufacturing, logistics, distribution or procurement. It is also of interest to anyone with a professional involvement in HR: HR directors, recruitment and selection coordinators, HR advisers, change managers, etc. Concept At this event, we focus on the role and position of the Supply Chain Manager from a number of different perspectives. The results of our large-scale, scientific survey, conducted by Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School in collaboration with S&V Management Consultants and INSEAD, provide a thoughtful, academic view of this modern management discipline. An expert in recruitment and assessment will elaborate on the skills of the Supply Chain Manager that are needed now and in the future. A CEO places the supply chain organisation within a corporate perspective. Finally, the Supply Chain Managers themselves give their opinions in a panel discussion. Dr Paul Dittmann, Director of the Office of Corporate Partnerships for Demand - Supply Integration Forums at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville, TN), USA Supply Chain Management (SCM) is a competitive differentiator for many types of businesses, and CEOs who neglect it may be putting their firms in jeopardy. In this presentation, Dr Dittmann identifies key areas where CEOs can influence their supply chains and shows them how to assess the influence they currently exert. Good SCM starts with finding the right people from the most senior on down the ranks to lead a company s supply chain operation.

3 pm Insights from a European survey on the Supply Chain Manager Prof Dr Ann Vereecke, Prof Dr Roland Van Dierdonck, Prof Dr Robert Boute, Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School In this presentation, we report on the results of a large-scale European study we have conducted on how companies structure their SCM organisations. We explain how the typical SCM tasks are being allocated and supervised, paying particular attention to the profile and the role of the Supply Chain Manager. We describe which mechanisms are used to integrate these tasks, ranging from hierarchical structures to trust across different organisational units and corporations in the supply chain. We then go beyond the descriptive and try to understand why SC organisational structures are different across organisations. One of the most important variables is the strategy or, more generally, the strategic context the company is operating in pm Coffee break pm Supply Chain Leadership: what it takes and how to get there; a headhunter s perspective Andrew Kris, Director Borderless Executive Search As Supply Chain Management has become a complicated set of activities, touching many business functions and processes, reaching beyond the enterprise, it has become increasingly important to pick the right Supply Chain professional. In this presentation we focus on Supply Chain Leadership from a headhunter s perspective.
