1 French 1 Course Overview French is spoken in five continents by more than 200 million people and is the official language of more than 25 countries. Proficiency in French along with an understanding of the values and beliefs of French speaking cultures will enable people to participate actively in our diverse global community of the 21 st century. Students in French 1 embark on a voyage of discovery. They explore the language and the culture of the peoples who speak this modern world language. Students begin to develop their ability to understand simple spoken and written French. At the same time, they learn to communicate orally and in writing in a culturally appropriate manner about familiar topics that include self, family, school, pastimes, food, clothing and shopping, and house. In other words, they learn how, when, and why to say what to whom. Vocabulary and basic grammatical structures are taught within the context of everyday topics. Culture is embedded throughout the course and relates directly to the topics studied. French 1A Students start using the language to exchange greetings and introductions. They follow simple classroom directions and spell words in French. They interpret simple spoken and written French and use the language to communicate about their preferences, things they like to do, and their families. They give simple descriptions of people and communicate about school, including objects found in the classroom and their classes. Students tell time and the days of the week. There are four units in French 1A: Unit 1 Bienvenue à la classe de français!/ Welcome to French Class! Unit 2 Qu est-ce que tu aimes?/ What do you like? Unit 3 La famille/ Family Unit 4 A l école / At School 1

2 French 1B As students become more acquainted with the language, they communicate orally and in writing about pastimes and interests as well as weather and seasons. They talk about food and use French to order in a restaurant or café. Students communicate about shopping for clothing and accessories and express their opinions. In addition, they give simple descriptions of their houses and talk about household chores. Throughout the course, students interpret basic information on these topics when listening and reading. There are four units in French 1B: Unit 5 Les passe-temps / Pastimes Unit 6 Les repas / Meals Unit 7 Les vêtements / Clothing Unit 8 A la maison / At Home 2

3 UNIT OVERVIEWS French 1A Unit 1 - Bienvenue à la classe de français!/ Welcome to French Class! In the first unit, students exchange greetings and make introductions in a culturally appropriate manner. They learn numbers for talking about age and the French alphabet for spelling. Students follow simple classroom directions and ask and answer simple questions. They communicate orally and in writing about the classroom. Throughout the unit, students interpret basic information on these topics when listening and reading. In Unit 2, Qu est-ce que tu aimes?, students speak and write about their preferences and things they like to do, and ask and answer simple questions. They communicate about the frequency with which they engage in activities and express agreement or disagreement. They compare popular activities in Francophone countries and in the United States. They exchange information about the supplies they need for school, including how to shop for these supplies. They ask and answer simple questions and talk about the weather, the months of the year, and seasons. In addition, they learn how to extend and respond to invitations. They talk about after-school activities both in the United States and in Francophone countries. Throughout the unit, students interpret basic information on pastimes when listening and reading. They exchange preferences regarding their food choices and learn how to order in a café or restaurant. Students identify foods and dining habits in Francophone countries and compare them to those in the United States. Throughout the unit, students interpret basic information on these topics when listening and reading.
