2 PHILADELPHIA 76ERS MENTORING ART CONTEST Call for Entries 1 January 2016 National Mentoring Month Competition What does mentoring mean to me? Amateur Youth Artists Literary & Visual Arts Deadline January 15, 2016 Presented by the Philadelphia 76ers in partnership with My Brother s Keeper Philadelphia * The School District of Philadelphia * Mentoring Partnership & Resource Center * Philadelphia Youth Commission City of Philadelphia Office of Arts, Culture, & the Creative Economy Background The Philadelphia 76ers Mentoring Art Contest (MaC) is a city-wide competition to encourage and empower youth to express their ideas about mentorship through visual storytelling. MaC is open to Philadelphia amateur artists ages 10 to 24. MaC will select, reward, and exhibit art that reflects youth experiences with (a) formal mentorship programs; (b) informal mentorship from teachers, family members, community leaders, and others; and (c) peer-to-peer mentoring among youth. The competition is free to enter. MaC is being held in anticipation of National Mentoring Month (January 2016). This awareness campaign draws attention to the critical role mentoring plays in addressing community challenges such as low graduation rates, juvenile crime and workforce development. This large-scale public awareness campaign culminates with the annual National Mentorship Summit where multi-sector partners from across the country gather in Washington, DC, for a three day conference and advocacy event.

3 2 This year the NBA, in partnership with MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership and My Brother s Keeper (MBK) is partnering to increase the number of high-quality and sustained mentors by recruiting an additional 25,000 mentors, with a specific emphasis on recruiting men of color. To celebrate National Mentoring month and the NBA and MBK partnership, MaC s panel of judges will review the first 100 submitted artworks and choose 20 winning pieces. The top winners in each age category will win a cash prize. Their works will become part of a travelling exhibition with stops at the Wells Fargo Center, the National Mentoring Summit (in Washington, DC), and Big Brothers Big Sister s Southeastern PA, where the items will be permanently displayed. Winning works will also receive exposure through online and traditional media coverage. The MaC s partners have come together to issue this call for art that showcases a diversity of mentorship experiences and relationships. We hope to lift up the voices of youth who are learning, growing, and thriving with help from those who care about them. Theme MaC seeks to highlight artworks that (a) directly depict themes related to mentorship, or (b) were created as a result of a mentor-mentee relationship. We are looking for artistic expressions that answer the following questions: What does mentoring mean to you? Who is your mentor or role model? How has mentoring changed your life? Where do you meet with your mentor church, school, home, etc.?

4 3 RULES OF EXHIBIT Eligibility Eligibility is limited to amateur artists, ages 10 to 24, who are residents of Philadelphia, PA. Only one literary work or piece of art work per artist may be submitted. Awards & Public Exhibitions MaC will award 20 winners based on the criteria listed below. The 20 artists will have their works professionally framed and their pieces will be part of a touring art exhibit that will eventually be permanently displayed at the offices of Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern PA. (Submitted works will not be returned as at the end of the tour.) The 20 pieces of art will travel to Washington, DC for the National Mentorship Summit from January 26-28, The 20 pieces of art will be on display at this three day conference and advocacy event that attracts thousands of multi- sector mentoring partners from across the country. The next stop will be the Wells Fargo Center, where the 20 winners will be publically recognized at a Sixers game on January 30, The top three winners in each age group will receive a cash prize: Youth (13 and under) Teen (14-18 years) Young Adult (19-24 years) The prizes are as follows: First place: $100 Second Place: $75 Third Place: $50 Medium Categories MaC, a literary and visual art competition, will accept the following media: Paintings Artworks on paper, such as drawings, watercolors, collage, or photography Literary forms such poetry (spoken word), original song lyrics, or short essays (no more than two pages) All works can be no larger than 16 x 20 in size. Framing will be provided by the City of Philadelphia Office of Arts, Culture, & the Creative Economy.

5 4 Preparing Entries Submit only entries that are no larger than 16 x 20 in size Complete Form A, including the 100 word testimonial, and Form B for submission with the artwork. Any entries received without the completed forms will be disqualified. Deliver entries before 5:00p ET on Tuesday, January 15, 2016, to the address below. Delivering Entries All entries (artworks and accompanying forms) must be mailed or hand delivered to the following address: Philadelphia 76ers Mentoring Art Contest c/o Tu Huynh City Hall, Room 116 Philadelphia, PA Selection Process The MaC panel will review the first 100 submissions, selecting up to 20 artworks for the touring exhibition. Judging criteria include: (a) clarity of theme, (b) connection to mentorship, (c) creativity and artistic ability. Successful applicants will be notified, via , by January 19, Questions? This right includes the option to reproduce any such media and to utilize it in any of the co-sponsors related publications, web-sites, social platforms; or any approved media outlets such as but not limited to television news broadcasts, newspapers, or magazines. I understand there is no monetary or any other form of compensation for the use of such media and that this agreement will remain in effect for all media in possession of the co-sponsors.
