2 Dear School Administrators: Thank you for your willingness to participate in Kids Voting USA-Brownsville (KVUSA-B). As you know, KVUSA-B aims to educate students about the basics of responsible citizenship in a free society and does this by combining classroom learning with voting experiences and activities that promote an awareness of citizenship and civic responsibility. This spring, we have planned an exciting opportunity for Brownsville students to display their creative talents and knowledge of civic responsibility. All secondary campuses are encouraged to participate in the KVUB Multimedia Contest. This year s topic will be, Celebrating Democracy. Students will submit their media project to their campus KVUSA-B liaison. Each campus is asked to select the top three entries in each category and submit them to Alfonso Gutierrez, BISD Social Studies Specialist, Curriculum and Instruction Department by April 3, 2015 via the USB Flash Drive compatible with PC or CD. Thank you for your support in this endeavor. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Kids Voting USA-Brownsville. 4 Program Overview Purpose Kids Voting USA-Brownsville (KVUSA-B) invites Middle & High school children to participate in the KVUSA-B 2015 Multimedia Contest. The contest is designed to encourage students to practice good citizenship, and to promote an awareness of citizenship and civic responsibility. Categories Grades 6 th 8 th Grades 9 th 10 th Grades 11 th -12 th Topic: Celebrating Democracy Kids Voting USA-Brownsville aims to educate students about the basics of responsible citizenship in a free society and does this by combining classroom learning with voting experiences and activities that promote an awareness of citizenship and civic responsibility. This year, we would like to focus on what celebrating democracy is and how with this celebration we can enhance our responsibilities as citizens by expressing our opinion and. As citizens, we are afforded so many rights that we often take for granted. For instance, voting is a right that all responsible citizens have. Voting is our voice in the democratic society that we live in so it is important for all, young and old, to reject the thought that our vote doesn t count because it does.
