Module 2 Rational Numbers ENY Lesson 2 Using a Number Line to Add Integers 1

positive integers What is an integer? What do you know about: negative numbers Let's Make a Number Line Use the number line to practice counting up and down. Counting up corresponds to? Counting down corresponds to? Where do you start on a number line? 0 A positive 7 (7) is. A negative 7 () is. What do you call the distance between a number and 0? What is the relationship between (7) and ()? 2

Exercise 1: a. Suppose you received $10 from your grandmother for your birthday. You sent $4 on snacks. Using addition, how would you write an equation to represent this situation? b. How would you model your equation on a number line to show your answer? 0 Integer Cards Adding Integers

Example 1 and Example 2: Write the following equations. Solve the equations. Then use your marker on the number line to check your answers. + 4 = 3 + () = 5 + () + 3 = () () = 4

Think of a real world situation that would represent these equations. + 4 = 5 + () + 3 = Complete the Exit Ticket and hand in. 2.2 PS #1 Assignment: 5

Exercise 2 a. Decide whether the sum will be positive or negative without actually calculating the sum. i. 4 + ( 2) negative iv. 1 + ( 11) negative ii positive v positive iii. 6 + ( 3) negative vi ( 15) negative iv ( 123) Lesson 4: Date: Efficiently Adding Integers and Other Rational Numbers 10/30/ Common Core, Inc. Then circle the integer with the greater absolute value. Decide whether the sum will be positive or negative without actually calculating the sum. a b. 5 + ( 9) c d d ( 126) Lesson 4: Date: Efficiently Adding Integers and Other Rational Numbers 10/30/13 S Common Core, Inc. 8 Now that we've added a bunch of positive and negative integers, what is the rule for adding them? 8

Complete the Exit Ticket and hand in. Assignment: copied page Adding Positive and Negative Rational Numbers 9

Example 3: Applying Integer Addition Rules to Rational Numbers 1 Find the sum of 6 + ( 2 2 (. The addition of rational numbers follows the same rules of addition for integers. 0 1 Find the sum of = ( 3) = 10 + (.7) = = (.7)

Complete the Exit Ticket and hand in. Assignment: ENY 2.3 PS #1, ENY 2.4 PS #1 QUIZ tomorrow Subtracting Integers 11

Use your number line to solve the equation: = () = = = 0 What about this one? 4 () = 0 Subtracting Negatives video Imagine that you're cooking some kind of stew, but not on a stove. You control the temperature of the stew with magic cubes. These cubes come in two types: hot cubes and cold cubes. If you add a hot cube (add a positive number), the temperature goes up. If you add a cold cube (add a negative number), the temperature goes down. If you remove a hot cube (subtract a positive number), the temperature goes down. And if you remove a cold cube (subtract a negative number), the temperature goes UP! That is, subtracting a negative is the same as adding a positive. 12

Subtraction Positive and Negative Numbers 1 8 = 10 = 7 () = 6 (0) = Practice: Solve the equation then compare your answers with a partner = () = 1 () = 2 4 = 17 () = 13

Complete the Exit Ticket and hand in. () = 7 8 = 16 () = Assignment: Subtracting 1 and 2 digit integers copied page 14
