3 What is an Apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is a nationay recognised training programme combining rea work with earning and training, both on the job and at coege. As empoyees, Apprentices earn a wage and work aongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skis. Off the job, Apprentices receive training to work towards nationay recognised quaifications. Anyone iving in Engand, over 16, who does not have a degree can appy. Coege attendance is day, evening or bock reease, depending on the occupationa area. The ength of the programme ranges from one to four years, depending on the type of apprenticeship taken and the motivation and enthusiasm of the Apprentice. Apprenticeships have been designed around the needs of empoyers, and they ead to recognised quaifications. The apprenticeship training framework comprises: Functiona Skis - incuding Maths, Engish, IT (coege) Empoyment Rights and Responsibiities (coege) Vocationa reated quaification such as an NVQ (assessed at work with coege support) For some apprenticeship frameworks, there are: Wider functiona skis e.g. probem soving. Certificates for specific discipines e.g. - Food Hygiene. - First Aid. There are three eves of apprenticeship avaiabe: Intermediate Apprenticeship: Leve 2 (equivaent to five GCSEs grades A-C). Advanced Apprenticeship: Leve 3 (equivaent to two A-eves). Higher Apprenticeship: Leve 4 to 7. Starting at supervisory eve, up to post-graduate eve and akin with someone who wi be working at a more compex eve or in a supervisory capacity. For entry to this eve attainment of two A-eves or equivaent woud be required as we as reevant work experience. 4 West Sussex County Counci Commitment to Apprenticeships West Sussex County Counci recognises the vaue apprenticeships can bring to the oca community, boosting skis and empoyment prospects. We empoy Apprentices as a key part of our own workforce and encourage other empoyers to do ikewise. Some 85% of our Apprentices who compete have gone onto find further paid empoyment showing apprenticeships reay work! Apprenticeships bring many benefits: a Earning a saary. a Getting paid hoidays. a Receiving training. a Gaining quaifications. a Learning job-specific skis. Visit: or for further detais. We are working in partnership with our oca coeges who run apprenticeship schemes in the area: Centra Sussex Coege, Chichester Coege, Highbury Coege (Portsmouth) and Northbrook Coege (Worthing). Each coege has information on the apprenticeships they deiver on their websites. A Apprentices recruited by West Sussex County Counci to undertake an apprenticeship framework wi be empoyed on a contract for training and wi receive the evauated pay and terms & conditions reevant for the roe. An Apprentice needs to work for a minimum of 30 hours a week. There are over 240 types of apprenticeship training frameworks covering a range of occupationa areas such as Eary Years, customer services, business administration, teaching and earning in schoos, buit environment, fire engineer technicians, heath and socia care, human resources, financia services, environmenta conservation, construction maintenance, chidren and young peope and ICT. 5 How ong does it take to compete an Apprenticeship? This depends on the type of apprenticeship scheme and the eve at which you study. Typicay an Apprentice who is studying an Advanced Apprenticeship in Heath and Socia Care woud be aowed 18 months to compete their study. An Intermediate apprenticeship woud be ess than this (a year), a Higher Apprenticeship coud take as ong as four years. It wi aso depend on your motivation, enthusiasm, persona circumstances and the persona time you aow for competing your portfoio of evidence. Pay and Benefits Once empoyed, individuas wi undertake training at work on the job and at coege. You wi be fuy supported throughout your apprenticeship (a course which wi ast between 1 and 4 years). Working hours wi vary between the minimum of 30 and 37 per week. Apprentices empoyed on contracts of one year or more wi receive annua incrementa pay rises. Apprentice fu time Weeky Pay: Apprentice - 265* Advanced Apprentice - 290* Higher Apprentice - 325* You wi be paid on the 24th of each month directy into your bank account. As an Apprentice you wi aso receive a hoiday entitement of 23 days (pro-rata) pus bank hoidays. Benefits of an apprenticeship with West Sussex County Counci incude things such as a variety of discounts (incuding restaurants, heath and beauty, hoidays, and home and garden) as we as discount rai cards (20%), a free bus from Bognor Regis to County Ha Chichester, the abiity to undertake a mutitude of training opportunities and onsite catering faciities at the West Sussex County Counci main offices. *Pro-rata for part time. page 3 September 2013 Apprenticeships

6 The Apprenticeship Contract Apprentices are empoyed on a contract for training. This differs from the usua contract of empoyment as the focus is on competing your studies whist working for the organisation. The end date of the contract wi be the expected finish date of the apprenticeship training programme. Progression into Empoyment For new Apprentices, there is no guarantee of empoyment at the end of the apprenticeship, however some 65% of Apprentices have gained further empoyment with us. vacancies before they are advertised internay. Shoud you be successfu you wi move across onto the terms and conditions reevant to the grade of the post you have appied for. Apprentices are wecome to appy for other jobs during their apprenticeship but if successfu must finish their studies. Towards the end of your apprenticeship you can register with our Interna Pacement Service where you wi receive access to new job The contract is continuous from the date you commenced your apprenticeship training programme with West Sussex County Counci, uness there has been a break in service for another reason. page 4

7 Time Off for Apprenticeship Training The West Sussex County Counci Training and Deveopment poicy states as the organisation is paying for the training, paid eave of absence shoud be granted for you to attend your course/ programme of study. This woud incude time away from duties when your assessor visits or working a shorter day/ time off in ieu if you are attending an evening course. When you request annua eave, it is important to check how this fits into your attendance time at coege as you shoud not be taking annua eave on coege and training days. It is a requirement that your attendance at coege is 100% wherever possibe. The overa required attendance at coege or with your training provider depends on the type of framework you are studying. Typicay, an Advanced Apprentice woud attend coege haf a day a week whist undertaking their Functiona Skis and up to a day a week for their Technica Certificate. Some frameworks are deivered mainy in the workpace and the competence reated eement is usuay attained in the workpace with support of the coege. page 5 September 2013 Apprenticeships

8 Responsibiities within the Apprenticeship Framework West Sussex County Counci Apprentice As an Apprentice your responsibiities are to: Be committed to succeed with the apprenticeship training scheme. Foow West Sussex County Counci rues and procedures on empoyment. Be a team payer. Accept responsibiity for own earning and to ask for support when needed. Be motivated and wiing to deveop job skis and to do we. Attend coege and work as required. Undertake assignments and course work in a timey manner. Foow reasonabe instruction and tasks set by your manager. Manager A manager is responsibe for the foowing activities: Providing a safe working environment incuding heath and safety induction. Ensuring the Apprentice understands the Diversity and Equaity in Empoyment Poicy. Ensuring the Apprentice has appropriate on-the-job experience in order to compete their studies and earn the vocationa discipine. This wi hep Apprentices to achieve their individua earning objectives. Agreeing the individua s training pan and provide feedback to the Training Framework Co-ordinator and Assessor. Ensuring adequate and competent supervision of the Apprentice. Recording and monitoring the Apprentice s workpace attendance. Taking part in earning reviews for the Apprentice. 9 What if it doesn t work? Coege/Training Provider Framework Co-ordinator Once an Apprentice has enroed on their studies, the coege wi assign a framework co-ordinator to work with them. This person wi be their main ink with the coege and work. The co-ordinator wi see the Apprentice during their study at the coege and they wi aso visit the Apprentice at work. The purpose of the visit is to check a is we and provide pastora care to ensure the Apprentice can achieve their quaification. The Apprentice s supervisor shoud attend these meetings. Workpace Assessor In order for an apprenticeship to work, an Apprentice must perform equay we in both coege and work. Apprentices are expected to compy with and undertake a aspects of the apprenticeship framework to a satisfactory standard (incuding training and assessment) and aso expected to make a vauabe contribution to the service in which they work. Any faiure to do so wi resut in their contract for training with West Sussex County Counci being reviewed. Every Apprentice wi have a dedicated workpace assessor. The assessor may work directy for the manager or might be connected with the coege. If the atter, it is ikey the manager woud be asked to provide expert witness testimonies on the Apprentice s work performance. These are used in the Apprentice s portfoio of evidence. page 7 September 2013 Apprenticeships
