CHAPTER 1 Chapter 1 TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR NETWORK CHAPTER CONTENTS Where to fid your solutio below Troubleshootig techiques If you do t fid a solutio Where to fid your solutio To solve a problem, choose from the optios i this list: Lear troubleshootig techiques. To lear Artisoft Techical Support s three-step troubleshootig process, see Troubleshootig techiques o page 2. Solve a LANtastic for Widows NT problem. For solutios to problems istallig or usig LANtastic o a Widows NT 4.0 computer, see Chapter 2, begiig o page 7. Solve a LANtastic for Widows 95/98 problem. For solutios to problems istallig or usig LANtastic o a Widows 95/98 computer, see Chapter 3, begiig o page 15. Solve a LANtastic for DOS or Widows 3.x problem. For solutios to problems istallig or usig LANtastic o a Widows 3.x or DOS computer, see Chapter 4, begiig o page 27. From the symptoms described i that chapter, you ll be referred to specific solutios by title ad page umber i Appedix A. Look up a istallatio-related error message. This maual lists istallatio-related error messages for LANtastic i Chapter 5, begiig o page 43. If the error message you received did ot occur durig istallatio, look for it uder error messages i this maual s idex, or see Error message lists o page 5 for istructios o fidig more error explaatios. Fid alterative solutios. If you ve followed all the troubleshootig solutios i this guide ad still have a problem, see If you do t fid a solutio o page 4 to lear about additioal sources of iformatio such as the Readme file ad olie Help. 1
2 Troubleshootig techiques Most computer problems are easier to fix whe you isolate, idetify ad test. This is the same process that Artisoft Techical Support aalysts use whe you call them for help. It s a good idea to lear this three-step process of arrowig dow ad tracig the cause of your problem before you use ay other part of this maual. Isolatig the problem To isolate a problem, you eed to reduce the umber of elemets that could cause it. For example, checkig to see if the problem ca be reproduced o all computers i the etwork reveals whether the problem occurs i just oe computer. If the problem occurs o all of them, check to see what happes whe you reduce the umber of etworked computers by half. You ca the quarter the etwork, ad so o, util you locate the source of the problem. As you work with fewer ad fewer variables, the source of the problem should become clear. Try these geeral isolatig tips: TIP See the Readme file for updated iformatio o troubleshootig specific problems. Refer to LANtastic Readme file o page 5 for iformatio. 1. If possible, see if the problem still occurs without the etwork software loaded. (See Basic cofiguratio o page 67 for LANtastic for Widows 3.x ad DOS; for Widows 95, Widows 98 or Widows NT 4.0, see Addig or removig selected etwork compoets o page 24.) If the problem disappears, this is a sig that: You may eed more memory free whe the etwork is loaded. The program may ot be cofigured correctly. For example, there might be a driver cofiguratio coflict. If you re usig the program over the etwork, the program may ot be etwork-compatible. Cotact the vedor. The etwork itself might have a commuicatio problem. You ca double-check the source of the problem by addig the etwork compoets back oe at a time util the problem returs. See Basic cofiguratio o page 67 for istructios. 2. Does the problem occur i all applicatio programs or just oe? You might thik oe software program has a pritig problem, but if additioal programs fail to prit, you should probably check out the computer s hardware, the priter or cotrol directory corruptio. 3. Avoid troubleshootig a etire etwork if oly two computers are eeded to test the problem. LANTASTIC INSTALLATION AND SETUP MANUAL
3 4. Did the applicatio program ever work? If so, what elemets i the system had chaged whe the problem was first oticed? If ot, are the miimum system requiremets met? 5. Is the problem easily reproduced? Itermittet problems are the hardest to solve. If a problem is reproducible, it s easier to idetify ad correct. Whe you have itermittet problems, have everyoe keep otepads ear their computers ad write dow what they were doig at the time whe each problem occurred. Idetifyig the source Next, idetify key elemets i the isolated system that could cause the problem. This is where most troubleshooters do t follow through. Keep a ope mid about all possibilities. It s a commo mistake to overlook somethig because othig has chaged. I most cases, the chaged elemet was t yet idetified. Focus o listig possible causes, rather tha what you believe is t causig it. A simple commuicatios problem ca ivolve cables, coectors, adapter cards, motherboards, power supplies ad software drivers. All problems ivolve multiple elemets. Each software driver is a separate elemet. You might thik it could t be the cable sice othig has chaged, but cables ca easily become damaged. Testig the problem After you ve idetified the key elemets, you must test each oe of them. I ay list of possible causes some are more likely tha others. Test the most probable first, the the ext, util you ve discovered the cause. If you ru out of possibilities you may ot have idetified all, or it might take a obscure combiatio of evets to produce the error. Patiece is ofte your best tool. Testig ca be faster i some cases if you first remove as may of the possible causes as you ca, ad get dow to a basic workig system. The add each elemet back oe at a time util the problem reproduces. This techique allows you to get back to work ad look for the cause whe you have more time. Oce you ve tested ad prove what the cause is, the solutio will probably be obvious. If it is t, cosider cotactig the vedor of the problematical elemet for help. Here are some questios to cosider at this stage of the process: Do you have the latest drivers for a hardware product? Hit...The Microsoft Home Page o the Iteret features a regularly updated list of Widows 95-compatible adapters ad drivers. Have you tried reistallig the program that has a problem? CHAPTER 1. TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR NETWORK
4 Ca you try ruig the applicatio without usig a memory maager that loads programs ito upper memory? Is the applicatio etwork-compatible? Are there ay kow coflicts betwee two programs or device drivers? (Cotact the vedors.) Ca you live without this elemet ad still be productive? Ca you chage aythig about this elemet that might make it fuctio or become compatible? For example, a etwork adapter card might work o a differet IRQ or I/O Base settig. A device driver coflict might be avoided by loadig the drivers i a differet order i your cofiguratio files. Durig the idetifyig or testig phase, the more accurately you ca describe the symptom, the more likely you or someoe else will be able to solve it. May tools ca help you spot symptoms. If you are t sure what to do ext, try to locate your specific problem i Chapter 2 (Widows NT), 3 (Widows 95/98) or 4 (DOS ad Widows 3.x), depedig o your computer s platform. If you still do t fid a solutio: Cosult Artisoft s Techical Notes (see below). Cotact Artisoft Techical Support. Sometimes problems just ca t be solved without outside assistace. See page 6 for iformatio. Usig Techical Notes Artisoft s Techical Notes are excellet sources of help. They cotai detailed iformatio about may commo problems, ad compatible third-party products. The solutios i this appedix apply oly to computers ruig LANtastic o Widows 3.x or DOS. Importat It s best to try the solutios i the order i which they re listed i Chapter 4. If you still have a problem after tryig all of them, see If you do t fid a solutio o page 4. It s also a good idea to review Troubleshootig techiques o page 2. NDIS disk error Make sure the disk you place i the drive is the correct NDIS driver disk from the etwork adapter card maufacturer. If the correct driver disk is t available, you ca choose the NodeRuer NDIS optio ad the dowload the file NDIS.EXE from the Artisoft s web site at Note that you ll still eed to have the NDIS driver from the maufacturer ad a sample PROTOCOL.INI file for your etwork adapter card. (AINDIS.EXE, for software ad hardware drivers, is also available o Artisoft s olie sites.) Iformatio about the Arti-Facts BBS, the Web ad FaxRetur appears i the Directory of Support Services that came i your product package. 61 53 Bus timig You may be havig a bus timig problem. If you re usig a Artisoft AE2 or AE3 etwork adapter card, try settig the W8 jumper o the adapter to the B ostadard settig. If you re usig a Artisoft NodeRuer etwork adapter card, try ruig the cofiguratio program (NRCONFIG or NRSETUP), ad settig the IOCS16 timig to early. May third-party adapters also have a bus speed selectio or jumper. Check the adapter s hardware maual for this optio. May computers have a bus speed optio i the CMOS setup program. Try settig this value to the stadard 8MHz. Usually, this settig is a divisio of the CPU. For example, a 33MHz computer should have a bus speed of CLK/4, to get 8MHz. Cosult your computer maual or dealer o settig this value. If these attempts fail, try the etwork adapter card i 8-bit mode. For AE series cards, this is either jumper W5 or W9. For NodeRuer adapters, use either the NRSETUP or NRCONFIG program to set Artisoft 8 mode. Cosult your hardware maual o the locatio of these jumpers for other adapters. Note Eight-bit etwork adapter cards do t ormally have bus timig problems. Cable You may be havig a cable problem i the etwork. Cosult the hardware maual for your etwork adapter card o the proper cable to use ad the limits o odes ad distaces. Here are some geeral tips o cablig: Importat Do t mix cable types i the etwork. Eve if both types are compliat with the stadard, slight differeces i the electrical characteristics ca cause trasmissio errors. Use the same brad ad type of cable throughout the etwork. For 10BaseT Etheret, make sure you re usig level 3 or higher cable, ad that the trasmit ad receive wires are twisted aroud each other o a pair. Most 10BaseT hubs ad adapters have gree lik itegrity lights. All lik lights should be o, but this does t rule out a improper crimp or poor coectio. Make sure the cable coectors ad termiators are istalled properly. For Etheret coaxial cables, it must be RG58A/U or RG58C/U cable, with properly sized ad attached BNC coectors. T-coectors must be attached to the etwork adapter card. Always use the termiators o the first ad last computer i the etwork. Complete iformatio o cablig ad hardware appears i the file called Hardware.pdf i the Olie Library. APPENDIX A. LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 3.X AND DOS SOLUTIONS
54 Check applicatio Make sure your applicatio is set up to prit to the same port that your computer is set up to use. For example, if you coect your LPT2 port to aother computer s priter, you must also set up WordPerfect to prit to LPT2. See your applicatio s maual for istructios. You ca fid out your priter redirectio by typig NET SHOW <Eter> at the DOS prompt. Look for the lies that metio which port the priter is redirected to. Make sure that the port to which you re redirectig is the same port for which your applicatio ad Widows 3.x are cofigured. O occasio, there are Widows 3.x prit drivers that try to access the physical port. I these istaces, try cofigurig Widows 3.x to prit to LPT1.DOS istead of LPT1. If you re usig a applicatio that has the ability to use its ow drivers or Widows 3.x, use the Widows drivers. Check resource Ru NET_MGR o the prit server computer ad check Shared Resources Maagemet. Make sure your priter resource is set to the physical port that the priter is attached to. If the port is wrog, jobs will lie up i the queue but will ever prit. Clear queue Before you attempt to totally clear a spool area, make sure the Server program is t ruig o the prit server. Restart the prit server ad do ot load the etwork. WARNING! Clearig the spool area o versio 5.0 ad earlier of LANtastic will also delete all mail messages. Make sure that you ve read or saved all mail messages o the prit server ad esure that all prit jobs have either bee prited or ca be recreated. Ru NET_MGR o the prit server without the etwork loaded ad select Queue Maiteace. Select the optio to clear prit jobs, type Yes to cofirm, the escape to DOS ad restart the etwork. Cotrol directory You may have a corrupted server cotrol directory. If your etwork setup is simple, you may wat to use NET_ MGR to delete the existig cotrol directory, the reistall LANtastic to build a ew oe. Also ru CHKDSK or SCANDISK to verify that there are o FAT table errors o the drive. You must do this without the Server program ruig. Fix ay FAT table errors first, the reistall LANtastic to make a ew cotrol directory. Cosult your DOS maual o usig CHKDSK. If you ve got a complex etwork setup, you should make a test cotrol directory to verify the problem. If the problem still exists with the ew cotrol directory, you do t have to chage the existig oe, sice that was t the problem. If the problem goes away with the ew cotrol directory, delete the old oe ad reistall LANtastic. LANTASTIC TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL
55 Characters per secod (CPS) Ru NET_MGR o the prit server ad select Shared Resources Maagemet. Select your priter resource, ad press Eter. Set the Characters per Secod field to (that s te thousad) ad press Eter. Escape back to the resources scree. Make the same chage to ay other priter resources o this prit server. Note The server will eed to be restarted for these chages to take effect. Access deied You ve bee deied access because your userame lacks sufficiet accout privileges ad/or resource access o the server you made the request to. Go to that server, ru NET_MGR ad make sure that your accout privileges ad the shared resource access cotrol list rights are set up to give you the appropriate access. Disk space Check the available disk space o the prit server (if this is a pritig-related error). There eeds to be plety of disk space free, at least 2 4MB, but this will deped o the umber ad size of your prit jobs. If you re low o space, try to free up as much available space as possible o the prit server. Geeral symptoms of full hard disks are: Out of disk space errors Program locks up whe writig to disk Pritig failures Caot write to... or Caot create file... errors Normally the error message will be self-explaatory ad idicate which drive is full. However, i a etwork eviromet disk access is buffered, so the drive idicatig the error may ot be the oe that s actually full. Check all drives that the computer gettig the error message has access to. LANtastic prit servers eed free disk space to spool prit jobs. These temporary files ca be very large whe pritig graphics ad special fots. Try to keep a miimum of 5MB free. May istall programs use temporary files. A 10MB applicatio may eed 20MB to properly istall. The istallatio istructios for the applicatio usually list the disk space required. To solve the problem, you eed to make more space available. To do so, you ca: Remove files that are o loger used or are outdated Move files that are seldom used to a backup device or diskette Use a disk or file compressio program like DOS s DoubleSpace Purchase a additioal or larger hard drive APPENDIX A. LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 3.X AND DOS SOLUTIONS
56 LPT timeout If your prit job wo t prit util you exit the applicatio i which it was created, you may ot have a NET LPT TIMEOUT settig o the computer, or it may ot be set high eough. Some applicatios that are t etwork-aware or etwork-itegrated do t close the spool file whe they re fiished pritig. To fid out if you have a timeout set, type NET SHOW <Eter> at the DOS prompt. You should see a lie that says NET LPT TIMEOUT [i secods:] #. If the umber show is zero (0), edit your STARTNET.BAT file ad add the lie NET LPT TIMEOUT 10. The Net LPT timeout ca also be set i the CONNECT.BAT file, if you have oe. Duplicate redirectio You re attemptig to redirect a disk or priter that is already redirected, or log i to a server you re already logged ito. You may have duplicate NET USE ad/or NET LOGIN commads i your STARTNET.BAT file you could edit out. If you wat to chage the coectio of a drive or priter that s already redirected somewhere else, simply ru NET ad cacel the curret coectio before reassigig it. Disk corruptio Errors ivolvig disk corruptio ca rage from simple, easy-to-fix temporarily lost data, all the way to serious computer problems ad importat data loss. You should make backup copies of your diskettes ad other data regularly. Symptoms Some symptoms of corruptio are: program lockups disk read/write error messages such as File ot foud ad Error readig file... partitio table or FAT (File Allocatio Table) error messages submeus of a applicatio failig to respod pritig failures the computer spotaeously restartig while you work the computer fails to boot from the corrupt disk Causes Some commo causes of disk corruptio are: hardware failures/defects disk media failures/defects LANTASTIC TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL
57 lockups while writig to disk failig to properly shut dow a etwork server while users access it sudde power surges or outages some icompatible combiatios of TSR programs usig write-behid disk cachig with some applicatio programs Solutios Whe solvig corruptio problems, be cautious because actios you take may make the corruptio worse. If possible, avoid writig ew data to the corrupt disk. Verify the problem with a utility such as DOS s SCANDISK or CHKDSK. There are may other utilities o the market to help you deal with this type of problem. For critical data protectio ad recovery, you should cosider ivestig i oe of them. (Note that these utilities ca t be used while the LANtastic Server program is ruig.) Some utilities ca recover the data, but i most cases you ll eed to reistall lost executables or restore data files from backup. It s ot ucommo for the system to work ormally after the corruptio is removed, sice the corrupt files were oly temporary oes used by a sigle applicatio. I a worst-case sceario, the etire disk may have to be reformatted ad reistalled, or you may have to eve use the FDISK commad to partitio the drive. No oe ca tell you whe this would be the best approach sice you re the oly oe to kow the value of the data at risk. For critical data, you may wat to cosult a data recovery professioal. After you ve used the utility to remove the corruptio, it s equally importat to resolve what caused the corruptio i the first place. A defective diskette ca ormally be replaced easily, but defective hardware or TSR coflicts ca be difficult to isolate. See the troubleshootig techiques o page 2 for more o how to approach geeral troubleshootig. FORCE_ACK_MODE switch If you have a Etheret etwork ad there s a large speed differece betwee your computers, you should try usig the FORCE_ACK_MODE switch o the AILANBIO driver of the slowest computer. For example, edit the etwork startup batch file, ad add the switch so this lie reads: AILANBIO FORCE_ACK_MODE Note Usig this switch icreases etwork traffic. APPENDIX A. LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 3.X AND DOS SOLUTIONS
58 Icrease DOS resources May applicatio-specific problems ca be solved by icreasig DOS resources o the server ad sometimes the workstatio. DOS resources iclude FILES, FCBs, Share Locks ad File Space, ad Memory. If the workstatio crashes oly i oe applicatio, you probably eed more memory. Server computers eed eough Files ad Share Locks to accommodate all users, while workstatios eed oly eough for a sigle user. For example, if WordPerfect wats 25 files i the CONFIG.SYS ad you have 10 users, set the files i the server CONFIG.SYS to 250. LANtastic should always have a miimum of 50 files for itself. If you eed more tha the 255 files DOS will support, use the MAX FILES settig i NET_MGR, Server Startup Parameters. Sice SHARE defaults to oly 20 locks, make sure you have L ad F switches. As a geeral rule, try two locks for every file, but you may eed more i a heavily used database. The F switch cotrols the area of memory that stores the fileames that are locked. A example of SHARE for the previous sceario would be: SHARE /L:500 /F:4096 FCBs i the CONFIG.SYS should be FCBS=16,8 as a miimum. As you icrease your other DOS resources, you may ru low o available memory. You might have to use a memory maager to free up more covetioal memory. Also, removig ay programs that are t ecessary to test the problem may free up eough memory for the program to work. Keyboard problems May keyboard problems ca be solved by usig a alterate keyboard driver. O the Arti-Facts BBS, you ca dowload INT9FIX.EXE, a self-extractig file. It cotais several keyboard patches with DOC files. These TSRs may solve the problem. Ivalid userame You ve attempted to log i to a server usig a ivalid userame or password. Make sure that a valid accout does exist o the server ad that the userame ad password are spelled correctly. If everythig checks out correctly but the error persists, you may have a corrupt cotrol directory. For istructios, see Cotrol directory o page 54. IRQ ad I/O Base You may have aother device i the computer that coflicts with the etwork adapter card s settigs. Each adapter eeds to have a uique Iterrupt Request Lie (IRQ) ad/or I/O Base address. Most Artisoft adapters default to IRQ 15 ad IOBASE 300. Cosult your hardware maual or brochure o how to chage these. May etwork adapter cards use jumper settigs o the card to cofigure its LANTASTIC TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL
59 settigs. Usually, a adapter with jumpers will require that its driver commad lie have switch settigs that match the jumper settigs. Verify that your driver switch settigs match your etwork adapter card settigs. If you re usig a NodeRuer etwork adapter card, you may have to place the adapter i aother computer first to cofigure it to alterate settigs to avoid a coflict. LANCHECK Importat If you re usig remote boot ROMs, make sure the ROM address does t coflict with other adapters or with the video ad BIOS areas of upper memory. If ay of the computers o your etwork are set up for CD-ROM drives ad Widows for Workgroups, edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If you fid the /S commad o the MSCDEX commad lie, delete it before ruig LANCHECK. If you do t, the computer will lock up while ruig LANCHECK. At every computer o the etwork, go to the DOS prompt, chage to the LANTASTI directory the type LANCHECK <Eter>. I the LANCHECK scree, the top lie shows the computer s ame, followed by the ames of all the other computers curretly ruig LANCHECK. Every ode ruig LANCHECK should list all the other odes ruig LANCHECK. Notes The colum furthest to the left idicates which adapter umber each etwork adapter card is set to. Oly odes of like adapter umbers ca commuicate directly. If you have more tha oe adapter i a sigle computer, the each adapter must have a differet adapter umber. Of particular iterest i LANCHECK are the error ad idex percetages. Ay percetage above zero is uacceptable for 10Mb Etheret. A error ad/or idex readig above zero ca idicate a hardware problem. Refer to Hardware.pdf i the Olie Library. To isolate the possible cause of missig odes or high error rates with coaxial cable, simply termiate two odes together ad ru LANCHECK. If LANCHECK shows all is well, move the termiators apart oe ode at a time util the problem pops up. You ca the swap out the cable, T coector, ad termiator oe at a time ad look for improvemets that would idicate the culprit. If computers ca t see each other i LANCHECK, look o the secod page of LANCHECK for the software versio. Each computer eeds to have versio 5.x or above for all of them to see each other. Whe usig NDIS support for third-party etwork adapters, LANCHECK wo t show ay errors eve though there may be a problem. A detailed descriptio of the LANCHECK program appears i the PDF file Lcheck.pdf, i the Olie Library. Iformatio about the Olie Library ad usig the PDF files appears i the LANtastic Istallatio ad Setup Maual. APPENDIX A. LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 3.X AND DOS SOLUTIONS
60 LASTDRIVE commad If your computer gives you the error Ivalid drive specificatio, it meas you have t icluded the DOS commad LASTDRIVE=Z i your CONFIG.SYS. Edit your CONFIG.SYS to iclude the lie LASTDRIVE=Z at the bottom. LPT timeout The etwork LPT TIMEOUT must be set o every computer, i the STARTNET.BAT file or CONNECT.BAT file. Its purpose is to automatically close the spool file for applicatios that may ot be etwork-aware. The etwork will wait the specified umber of secods ad, if the applicatio has t set ay more data to the priter, the prit job will be closed. Some applicatios may take loger to search data ad the default timeout may cause mixed or broke prit jobs. If you thik this might be the problem, type the commad NET LPT TIMEOUT 0 <Eter> to disable this feature, the ru your prit test agai. Make sure to issue this commad o the same computer you re sedig the prit job from. If your problem disappears, set the timeout to 60 ad ru the test agai. You may eed to adjust this umber util all your applicatios fuctio correctly. Oce you ve foud the optimum time, chage the NET LPT TIMEOUT lie of the STARTNET.BAT file or CONNECT.BAT file o each computer to this umber. NET SHOW Type NET SHOW <Eter> at the DOS prompt. You should see a list of iformatio items about this computer s etwork status. The first lie idicates the versio of LANtastic beig ru o this computer. The secod lie idicates the ame of this computer ad whether it s beig ru oly as a redirector (a workstatio), or as a redirector ad a server. If it does t state that this computer is beig ru as a server ad you wat it always to start up as a server, you ll eed to reistall LANtastic ad select Share my files ad priters. You ca also type SERVER <Eter> at the DOS prompt to temporarily make your computer a server. (The ext time you restart, SERVER wo t load uless you type it agai.) The status iformatio should also idicate which servers are available, which servers this computer is logged i to, ad ay drive ad priter redirectios. If you type NET SHOW ad get a error message sayig Redirector must first be istalled, the you re ot loadig the etwork software. Verify that a STARTNET.BAT file does exist ad that it has bee ru. You may eed to add a lie i your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to call the STARTNET.BAT so the etwork will be loaded automatically every time you start your computer. Importat If you add this call lie (CALL C:\LANTASTI\STARTNET.BAT), avoid errors by makig sure you place it before ay loadig of MSCDEX; before ay loadig of WINDOWS (WIN.COM); after ay PATH statemet; ad after ay loadig of SHARE.EXE. LANTASTIC TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL
61 NET USE If a priter is to be shared o the etwork, all computers you wat to use this priter, icludig the oe physically attached to the priter, must NET USE the device. If the prit server statio does t NET USE its ow priter, the etwork will compete with DOS for the priter port ad you ll experiece errors or o pritig. To see whether your priter is properly assiged, type NET SHOW <Eter> at the computer s DOS prompt to iformatio about the computer s cofiguratio. You should see a lie that states PRINTER LPT1 IS REDIRECTED TO \\serverame\@device. Note that LPT1 may be LPT2, 3 or a COM port, depedig o your NET USE statemet. If this lie does t appear whe you type NET SHOW, this computer is t assiged to a etwork priter. Note I LANtastic for Widows 95, you ca t NET USE your ow priter. No loopback redirectios Normally, if your computer has a physical drive, you should t redirect it elsewhere o the etwork. Leave your physical drives physical. You should ever redirect a physical drive back to itself. A example of this is NET USE C: \\server\c-drive. However, you ca ormally redirect logical drives back to themselves. Logical drives, also kow as virtual drives, do t physically exist o your computer. They re just letters assiged to other drives. Whe you redirect a logical drive to itself o the etwork, some applicatios may ot work. Widows 3.x, for example, wo t work i ehaced mode if you loopback a redirectio o your hard drive. Istead of the loopback NET USE statemet, replace it with a equivalet SUBST (substitute) commad. For example, i your etwork startup batch file, replace NET USE G: \\SERVER\C-DRIVE with SUBST G: C:\. Ruig MSD Ru Microsoft Diagostics (MSD) to make sure the priter is available, by exitig Widows 3.x the typig MSD <Eter> at the DOS prompt. MSD also has a priter test. Ru it to cofirm that the priter will work. If it does t prit, check your priter cable, port, ad/or priter. Plottig programs Some plottig programs, such as AutoCAD, require a adjustmet to ru o a etwork. If you re havig problems gettig your plot to prit out, try chagig your program to plot to a file ad ame the file the same as your redirected port. APPENDIX A. LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 3.X AND DOS SOLUTIONS
62 For example, you ve set up the commad NET USE COM1 to a plotter o the server. If you set up your applicatio to plot to a file, but ame the file COM1, this should allow you to plot successfully over the etwork. There are techical bulletis available for AutoCAD that cover pritig ad plottig as well as the autospool feature of the ew AutoCAD versios. Priter tasks Ru NET_MGR o the prit server ad select server startup parameters. Make sure the DESPOOLING field is ENABLED ad that priter tasks is set to 1. Escape back to the NET_MGR mai meu. The prit server will eed to be restarted for the chages to take effect. Note If the server is usig a switch file, you ll eed to edit your switch file ad set: priter_tasks=1 as this file will override the NET_MGR settigs. Prit maager I order for Widows 3.x to prit to a etwork priter, both the Widows prit maager ad Fast Pritig Direct to Port will eed to be disabled. To disable them, ope the Widows Cotrol Pael, the select Priters. Make sure the Use Prit Maager box is cleared, the click Coect. Make sure the Fast Pritig Direct to Port box is cleared. There are two timeout selectios just above the fast pritig box; set the Device Not Selected Timeout to 900 ad the Trasmissio Retry to 950. Click OK, the close the prit maager. These chages should take effect without restartig. Prit to file Some applicatios attempt to cotrol the priter hardware directly rather tha goig through DOS. To be compatible with the etwork, see if your applicatio ca prit to a DOS port istead of hardware. Aother approach is to prit to a file. Whe the applicatio asks what file ame to prit to, tell it LPT1, or whichever port you ve redirected i the etwork. RAMBASE If your etwork adapter card uses a RAMBASE address, you should verify that the RAMBASE address does t coflict with video or BIOS memory areas. Also, if you re usig a memory maager, such as EMM386 or QEMM, you must exclude the RAMBASE area from the memory maager. Your RAMBASE may also be coflictig with shadow ram settigs cotrolled by the computer s CMOS settigs. Try disablig all shadowig i the CMOS. LANTASTIC TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL
63 Recreate resource Note If you re usig the global resource optio of LANtastic 5.0 ad higher, make sure you re workig at the server where the device is physically attached. You may eed to delete ad recreate your priter resource. To do this, you ll eed to ru NET_MGR o the prit server without the etwork loaded. Select Shared Resources Maagemet. Highlight your priter resource ad ote the ame. If this is a serial device or plotter, or if you re usig a setup strig, file or cleaup file, you ll eed to press Eter ad write dow all relevat iformatio. For a serial device, make sure you ote the baud rate, word legth, stop bits, parity ad flow cotrol. After you have all the iformatio eeded, press Esc. With your resource ame highlighted, press the Delete key, the Eter to cofirm. Next, press the Is key ad type i the ame of your resource. Note All priter resources must start with symbol. Resource Note You ll be prompted to specify the port. Make sure you specify the physical port where the priter or plotter is attached. Highlight your ew resource ad press Eter. Set the Characters Per Secod to (te thousad). You ll also eed to set your serial iformatio ad/or setup or cleaup files. Do t chage the lies per page, tab width, ad other settigs. Escape to DOS, restart the etwork ad try your prit job agai. If you re usig the global resource optio of LANtastic 5.0 ad higher, make sure you re workig from the server where the device is physically attached. You may eed to delete ad recreate the resource you re attemptig to coect to. To do this, you ll eed to ru NET_MGR o the server. Select Shared Resources Maagemet. Highlight the resource ad ote the ame. You ll eed to press Eter ad write dow all the iformatio about the resource setup. After you have all the iformatio eeded, press Esc. With your resource ame highlighted, press the Delete key, the press Eter to cofirm. Next, press the Is key ad type i the ame of your resource. Note All priter resources must start with symbol. Highlight your ew resource ad press Eter. Set up the resource accordig to the otes you just made. Escape to DOS ad try accessig the resource agai. If you re still uable to coect successfully to this resource, you may have a corrupt cotrol directory. APPENDIX A. LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 3.X AND DOS SOLUTIONS
64 Priter coectio From the LANtastic program group i Widows 3.x, choose LANtastic Net, the choose Priters. If the computer s priter is t listed as a curret coectio, refer to the istructios for makig a ew priter coectio i your LANtastic for Widows 3.x User s Maual. Serial Whe you re sharig a serial priter or plotter, it s importat to set up the resource correctly. You ll eed to kow the baud rate, word legth, stop bits, parity ad the flow cotrol. Check your priter maual for the correct settigs. The port i NET_MGR o the server should be set to the port that the priter is physically attached to, ot a port redirected by the mode commad. Avoid ruig the mode commad as this will create a coflict over the port. Serial Widows 3.x If you ve got a serial priter or plotter ad ca t get it to prit i Widows 3.x with the etwork loaded, try the followig. Boot the computer without loadig Widows, but load the etwork ad try to prit. If this works, place a commad to sed a retur or <showpage> for a PostScript priter, before Widows loads. Some serial priters eed to be accessed by the etwork before Widows loads or Widows will take cotrol of the serial port ad ot allow the etwork access to it. Whether or ot this works, cotact Artisoft Techical Support for further assistace. SETVER Older versios of LANtastic required that certai drivers be put i the SETVER table. With LANtastic 5.x ad higher, you should cofirm that they re NOT i the SETVER table. To cofirm this, type: Share SETVER NET.EXE /D <Eter> SETVER REDIR.EXE /D <Eter> SETVER SERVER.EXE /D <Eter> If you receive sharig violatios while pritig, make sure that your applicatio is t tryig to physically access the port. Make sure that you re NET USE-ig the priter from this computer. If you still experiece this error, try loadig Share after the etwork programs istead of before. Note You ca t NET USE your ow priter o a Widows 95 computer. LANTASTIC TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL
65 Priter buffer Ru NET_MGR o the prit server ad chage the Priter Buffer size to 4096 for a laser priter or 2048 for a dot matrix priter. Make sure that your ru buffer is 2 for a o-dedicated server or o higher tha 128 for a dedicated file ad prit server. You might try addig the parameter BUFFERS=2 (or 3) to the REDIR lie of each statio. This may help improve prit throughput. Compressio utilities If you re usig a disk compressio utility, the etwork cotrol directory, ormally LANTASTI.NET, must be o the o-stacked drive o server computers. If it is t, you ll eed to prit out your settigs i NET_MGR o the server, the reame the LANTASTI.NET directory or delete it. You should reame your STARTNET.BAT file rather tha delete it, so that it ca be used for referece if eeded. The reistall your etwork, specifyig the o-compressed drive for the cotrol directory. Make sure your o-compressed drive has eough room for the prit files. Leave at least 2MB, but you may eed more depedig o the size ad quatity of prit jobs. Stress test If pritig jobs across the etwork causes etwork errors ad discoects, the source may be a cable or timig problem. Try copyig large files (5-10MB) across the etwork without Widows 3.x loaded. For example: XCOPY C:\DOS\*.*T:\TEMP\*.* <Eter> where T is the redirected drive. Swap cards Try swappig etwork adapter cards to isolate the problem. Swap the problem adapter with oe kow to work properly. Whe swappig, keep the adapter settigs or jumpers the same ad swap oly the cards, ot the coectors or cables. If the problem follows a Artisoft etwork adapter card to aother computer, cotact Artisoft Techical Support. If the problem follows the adapter ad it s ot a Artisoft adapter, cotact the vedor of the third-party adapter. If the problem stays with oe specific computer, try aother slot i the bus ad/or pull other adapters from the computer, leavig oly the video ad cotroller cards, if possible. If the problem ca be isolated to a coflict betwee aother adapter or specific motherboard, cotact the vedor of that product, or cotact Artisoft Techical Support. APPENDIX A. LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 3.X AND DOS SOLUTIONS
66 Timeout If you see TIMEOUT o your pritout, you ll eed to icrease the IMMEDIATE DESPOOLING timeout foud i NET_MGR o the prit server. To do this: Hit 1. Ru NET_MGR o the prit server ad select Shared Resources Maagemet. 2. Select your priter resource, ad press Eter. 3. If Immediate Despoolig is eabled, set the Immediate Despoolig Timeout to at least twice the NET LPT TIMEOUT set o each computer. If the NET LPT TIMEOUT is set to zero, disable Immediate Despoolig. To determie what the NET LPT TIMEOUT is set to, at a DOS prompt, type NET SHOW <Eter>. The NET LPT TIMEOUT should be displayed ear the top of the message. 4. Restart the prit server so the chage takes effect. Too may redirectios or logis There are five typical causes of this error message. 1. O the server you re tryig to log i to, ru NET_MGR. Highlight Server Startup Parameters, press Eter, ad verify that Max Users is set to a value at least as large as the maximum umber of simultaeous logis this server computer ca expect at ay oe time. 2. Make sure the REDIR lie i your STARTNET.BAT has logis= set to a value equal to or greater tha the total umber of servers o your etwork. 3. Make sure i NET_MGR that whichever accout you re tryig to log i with has a adequate umber of cocurret logis. 4. Someoe may have chaged the default cotrol directory to a differet ame. Make sure the same cotrol directory ame shows i both the STARTNET.BAT file ad NET_MGR. The STARTNET.BAT should cotai a lie that says: SERVER you re usig the default cotrol directory C:\LANTASTI.NET. Ad NET_MGR should also say Maagig C:\LANTASTI.NET (if that s the cotrol directory you re usig). 5. You may have cable problems. For complete cable iformatio see the file called Hardware.pdf i the Olie Library. LANTASTIC TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL
67 Basic cofiguratio Whe you re isolatig the source of a problem, it s a good idea to try takig your etwork dow to the most basic cofiguratio possible for testig purposes. This ivolves a bare miimum CONFIG.SYS ad AUTOEXEC.BAT file. First, make backup copies of your CONFIG.SYS ad AUTOEXEC.BAT files. The edit them to use oly the basic commads. To create a basic boot cofiguratio for both DOS ad Widows 3.x, edit the CONFIG.SYS file so it cotais oly these lies: DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS FILES=100 BUFFERS=32 LASTDRIVE=Z If you ru NDIS drivers for your etwork adapter card, add the followig two lies: DEVICE=C:\LANTASTI\PROTMAN.DOS /I:C:\LANTASTI DEVICE=C:\LANTASTI\DRIVER.DOS where DRIVER.DOS is the specific fileame for your NDIS driver. Now edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file so it cotais oly these lies: PATH C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS PROMPT $P$G SET TEMP=C:\TEMP If you re usig a disk compressio program or SCSI hard drive cotroller that requires special disk compressio drivers i CONFIG.SYS, leave those drivers i as well. Note If you re ruig DOS 6.0 or higher, you have the optio of miimizig your system cofiguratio by pressig the F8 key whe you start the computer, selectig the lies you wat to load from CONFIG.SYS, ad the skippig AUTOEXEC.BAT. Now restart the system ad load the etwork drivers maually. To do this, chage to the LANTASTI directory ad ru the commads o the ext page, which are located i your STARTNET.BAT file: APPENDIX A. LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 3.X AND DOS SOLUTIONS
68 NR <Eter> (for example) AILANBIO <Eter> REDIR <ame> <Eter> SERVER <Eter> (oly if this computer is a server) where <ame> is your computer s ame. If you re usig a third-party vedor s etwork adapter card ad NDIS drivers, the approach is slightly differet: I CONFIG.SYS, make sure you load DEVICE=C:\LANTASTI\PROTMAN.DOS /I:C:\LANTASTI DEVICE=C:\LANTASTI\DRIVER.DOS where DRIVER.DOS is the fileame for your specific NDIS driver. The, ru the followig commads which are i your STARTNET.BAT file: AI-NDIS BIND_TO=DRIVER_NIF AILANBIO REDIR <ame> SERVER (if this computer is a server) where DRIVER_NIF refers to the sectio i C:\LANTASTI\PROTOCOL.INI for your specific driver. Note the versio of each driver as it loads, ad verify that all of your computers are loadig idetical versios. Retest the problem. If the problem goes away, add the removed lies back to your CONFIG.SYS ad AUTOEXEC.BAT oe at a time, util you ca reproduce the problem. This will help pipoit the cause. Save these files ad restart. After you retur to the DOS prompt, chage directories to C:\LANTASTI to the load the etwork ito memory, either by had-loadig your etwork drivers, or just typig STARTNET. Widows 3.x For the etwork ad Widows 3.x to work properly, Widows eeds to be cofigured for the proper etwork type. If you re ruig LANtastic for Widows 3.x, the Widows should already be properly cofigured. LANTASTIC TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL
69 Techical bulletis are available for the Widows 3.0, 3.1, ad 3.11 eviromets. Iformatio o usig the Arti-Facts BBS ad FaxRetur systems appears i the Directory of Support Services. Some of the mai tips i these bulletis are: Ru the Widows 3.x setup program ad select LANtastic as the etwork type. Do t loopback etwork drive redirectios to your ow computer. Istead, use the SUBSTitute commad (C:\DOS\SUBST G: C:\). Tur off Prit Maager, ad Fast Direct Pritig to Port i the Widows Cotrol Pael. Fast direct to port is uder the coect area of priters i the cotrol pael. Add these lies to the SYSTEM.INI file: [LANTASTIC] NETWORK_IRQ=15 (NOTE: The IRQ should match the settig of your etwork adapter card) [boot] etwork.drv=c:\lantasti\lantnet.drv [386Eh] NETWORK=*VNETBIOS, C:\LANTASTI\LANTASTI.386 If you re usig a third-party etwork adapter card that requires a shared RAM address, make sure there s a lie i the SYSTEM.INI file [386Eh] sectio that excludes the RAMBASE address for the adapter. For example: EMMEXCLUDE=D800-DFFF Try removig other TSR programs to isolate the problem. Do t remove the HIMEM.SYS driver; it s eeded to ru Widows 3.x. For Widows for Workgroups, REMark or delete the DEVICE=IFSHLP.SYS driver lie i the CONFIG.SYS file, ad the DEVICE=VSHARE.386 lie i the SYSTEM.INI file. Without etwork Test your prit job without the etwork loaded to esure that the problem is t with the priter, computer or applicatio. O occasio, this may require movig the priter to the computer with the problem. APPENDIX A. LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 3.X AND DOS SOLUTIONS
70 Without Widows 3.x Ru your prit test without loadig Widows 3.x. This will require restartig the computer, startig the etwork, but ot loadig Widows 3.x. If your test rus at DOS, the load Widows ad try the same test. If the test fails at DOS, try the prit test without loadig the etwork to esure that it is t a priter, computer or applicatio error. If the problem happes oly i Widows 3.x, esure that your Widows is properly cofigured for a etwork ad/or your prit server is properly cofigured for ruig Widows. You ca test from DOS by copyig a file to the priter port. For example: COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS LPT1 <Eter> (or whatever port your priter is usig). If you have a laser priter, you ll probably eed to perform a maual form feed at the priter. If you have a PostScript priter, the copy commad wo t work; istead try the followig commads. From the DOS prompt type: COPY CON LPT1 <Eter> SHOWPAGE <Eter> F6 <Eter> NET SHOW Make sure the computer to which the priter is attached is set up to share its drives ad priters. Complete these steps: Go to the computer ad type NET SHOW <Eter> at the DOS prompt. I the display, look for a message such as Computer Nicks_PC is beig used as a Redirector ad a Server. If you do t such a message, you ca ru the Server program util the computer is ext shut dow by typig SERVER <Eter> at the DOS prompt. To make that computer start up as a server every day, you ll eed to reistall LANtastic ad, durig istallatio, choose the optio to share this computer s drives ad priters. Compatibility with LANtastic The followig checklists ca help you determie whether a applicatio is compatible with LANtastic: A applicatio is very likely compatible with LANtastic if: It s compatible with MS-DOS 3.1, 3.3 or above. It s advertised as etwork aware, ad/or as supportig DOS-based LANs. LANTASTIC TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL
71 It s advertised as NetBIOS-compatible. It uses DOS file ad record lockig covetios compatible with SHARE.EXE. It supports other DOS-based peer-to-peer LANs such as IBM PC LAN or Microsoft s MS-NET. A applicatio is most likely ot compatible with LANtastic if: It was desiged for pre-3.1 versios of MS-DOS. It s advertised as compatible with oly Novell NetWare or specifically uses the Netware API or is i a NetWare NLM format. It s a Cliet/Server applicatio that is t compatible with NetBIOS trasport or requires a specific cliet type such as a NetWare cliet. A applicatio may or may ot be compatible if: It requires physical access to a hardware device (security-dogle, tape drive adapter, etc.). It was desiged as a sigle-user applicatio. It s a TSR (termiate-ad-stay-residet) program. DOS SHARE-compatible Files do t eed to be marked as share-able o a LANtastic server. LANtastic relies o DOS s SHARE.EXE program (or the LANtastic server s Iteral SHARE) for file ad record lockig support. I fact, LANtastic does t have its ow file system; it uses DOS for all file operatios. So, whe your program opes a file, it will eed to ope it i a DOS file-sharig mode. Most popular computer laguages support shared file operatios. Your applicatio programmig laguage referece maual should have full details. Sharig violatios ad exclusive access If two users attempt to ope the same etwork file ad the first user has exclusive access to that file, you ca receive a sharig violatio message eve though your software is etwork-aware. If you get a sharig violatio whe someoe else tries to start up a program from a etwork drive, it s probably because you have exclusive access to a executable or overlay file associated with the applicatio. To correct this, mark the program s executable ad overlay files as read-oly usig the DOS ATTRIB commad. For example, issuig this commad ATTRIB +R *.EXE <Eter> i the program directory will mark all executable files as read-oly. Use the same commad o all *.OVL ad *.OVR files as well. APPENDIX A. LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 3.X AND DOS SOLUTIONS
72 Icrease SHARE parameters The SHARE.EXE program is icluded with DOS versios 3.0 ad higher. Applicatios ca use SHARE to lock a file or regio so that oly oe perso at a time ca make chages. Most multi-user ad etwork software packages use SHARE to implemet file ad record lockig. This sectio discusses how SHARE works ad how it ca affect your LANtastic etwork. Two parameters ca be maipulated with switches whe loadig SHARE. The first parameter /F:xxxx - cotrols the size (i bytes) that SHARE reserves for file path iformatio. The secod parameter /L:xxxx - determies the maximum umber of files ad/or records/fields that ca be ope ad locked at ay oe time. The /F parameter. Each ope file requires space for the path, plus 11 bytes. If the average path legth is 20 characters, the default value of 2,048 bytes is sufficiet for 66 simultaeously ope files (2048 / ( )). The sytax for usig the /F parameter is SHARE /F:, where is ay umber from 0 to approximately 62,000. The /L parameter. The /L parameter cotrols the umber of simultaeous locks that SHARE ca hadle. The default is /L:20 (20 locks), although some versios of DOS have a default value of 60. O a etwork like LANtastic, which ca ope 5,100 files per server, it s easy to see that 20 locks is t eough. The sytax for the /L parameter is SHARE /L:, where is ay umber from 1 through DOS SHARE actually has two buffer areas (both /L ad /F) that added together ca t equal more tha 64K. Iteral SHARE does t have this limitatio. Opeig a file o a server requires at least oe lock. The /L settig should be at least the umber of files you ve specified i your CONFIG.SYS file or i the NET_MGR server startup parameters optio (whichever is larger). If you re ruig a multi-user program that uses may files, cosider settig /L to at least twice the umber of ope files allowed. Icrease file hadles Multi-user applicatios (applicatios shared over the etwork) ormally ope may files per user. If there are t eough file hadles, applicatios may report a error of isufficiet file hadles, simply lock up, or behave upredictably. DOS is limited to a maximum of 255 available file hadles, but the LANtastic Server program lets you ope additioal file hadles. The FILES= parameter ad/or the Maximum Ope Files parameter uder server startup parameters must be set high eough for the eeds of the largest applicatio. LANTASTIC TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL
73 If the Maximum Ope Files parameter is set to zero (0), the server reverts to usig the FILES= value that s set i your CONFIG.SYS file. This value will serve as the total file hadles available to both the LANtastic server itself ad all users accessig files through the server. If the Maximum Ope Files parameter is set at a value other tha zero (50 5,100), that value will serve as the umber of file hadles available to users accessig files through the server. Ad the value after FILES= i CONFIG.SYS will serve as the umber of file hadles available to the LANtastic server ode itself. How files are opeed o a LANtastic server: If your program requires 20 file hadles for a sigle user to ru the applicatio, the LANtastic server ad workstatio s CONFIG.SYS file will eed 20 file hadles available for the workstatio to ope the applicatio from the server over a redirected drive. Whe a secod workstatio rus the same applicatio from the same server aother 20 file hadles must be available o the server for the secod loadig of the program. The secod workstatio, however, will eed oly 20 file hadles available i CONFIG.SYS. Therefore, i the above example the server must have FILES=40 i CONFIG.SYS or the secod workstatio wo t be able to ru the applicatio. Uable to bid to module <ame> There are several possible causes for this error message. Check each of the poits i this sectio. Your PROTOCOL.INI file may be missig critical lies, or the lies may be commeted out or remarked out (a lie that begis with a semicolo (;) or the letters REM <space> is iactive). Make sure your PROTOCOL.INI file cotais these lies, ad that there are o semicolos at the begiig of these lies: [PROTMAN] DRIVERNAME = PROTMAN$ DYNAMIC = YES [DRIVER_NIF] DRIVERNAME = DRIVER$ INTERRUPT = 15 IOBASE = 0X300 Make sure the header ame (e.g., [DRIVER_NIF] for AEXNDIS_NIF) i your PROTOCOL.INI file matches the BIND-TO statemet i your STARTNET.BAT file. Make sure your PROTOCOL.INI file cotais IRQ ad I/O Base settigs that match those of your etwork adapter. APPENDIX A. LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 3.X AND DOS SOLUTIONS
74 Out of eviromet space This error is retured whe you do t have eough eviromet space allocated for SET ad PATH commads. The eviromet space is allocated by the followig lie i the CONFIG.SYS file: SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS /E:512 /P There are times whe this shell lie is there, but there are so may commads beig set i the eviromet that a buffer of 512 bytes is t sufficiet. If the lie is t i the CONFIG.SYS add it at the ed of the CONFIG.SYS. If the lie is i the CONFIG.SYS icrease the /E: parameter. It s a good idea to start by doublig it. The lie would read as follows: SHELL=C:\DOS\COMAND.COM C:\DOS /E:1024 /P Isufficiet NetBIOS resources This error is the result of ot havig eough NetBIOS resources allocated for the umber of users o the etwork. First make sure that the umber of users beig allocated is actually the umber of users loggig i to this particular server. Ope NET_MGR, avigate to view the server startup parameters, ad check the Maximum Number of Users settig. This should be o higher tha the actual umber of users who will be logged i to the server cocurretly, plus two. If the umber of users is already set, the the ext step is to take a look at the AILANBIO driver. This is where the NetBIOS resources are allocated. These switches are NCBS, MAX_NCBS, SESSIONS ad MAX_SESSIONS. These will be listed o the AILANBIO lie or i the STARTNET.CFG file. By default these settigs are: NCBS=32 MAX_NCBS=32 SESSIONS=32 MAX_SESSIONS=32 Normally these settigs eed to be set oly to the umber of users loggig i, plus two. But other factors, such as the size of the etwork buffer, request size, ad etwork tasks beig allocated ca require a chage i this settig. Try icreasig these umbers to double what they are curretly. If this solves the problem, start reducig that umber. Icreasig these parameters will icrease the amout of memory AILANBIO will use. Settig the etwork buffers too high ca result i isufficiet NetBIOS resources. If you re usig aother compay s NetBIOS that does t allow you to allocate more NCBs ad/or sessios, you may wat to use the NBSETUP program to allocate more NCBs ad sessios. For more iformatio about NBSETUP, see the file Nbset_dw.pdf i the LANtastic Olie Library. Istructios for usig the PDF files i the Olie Library appear i the LANtastic Istallatio ad Setup Maual. LANTASTIC TROUBLESHOOTING MANUAL
75 Icreasig buffers Icrease the buffers allocated for the CD-ROM drive o the MSCDEX lie. This parameter is usually /M:XX. /M:10 is usually sufficiet, but try icreasig that umber to No-DOS disk support Icrease the umber of o-disk support files i the LANtastic NET_MGR program. This will be located uder the server startup parameters. By default, o-dos disk support is set to 100. Try doublig that umber. MSCDEX lie MSCDEX eeds to load after the REDIR lie (LANtastic Redirector program). Move the MSCDEX lie to either follow the CALL statemet for LANtastic i the AUTOEXEC.BAT file or after the REDIR lie i the STARTNET.BAT file. Redirector loadig Make sure that REDIR (LANtastic Redirector) is loadig before Server. Usually this error occurs whe MSCDEX is t loadig after REDIR. MSCDEX ot loadig MSCDEX is t loadig for the CD-ROM. This could be due to a hardware coflict with aother device i the computer. Also, cofirm the MSCDEX driver will load without LANtastic. /S switch Check the MSCDEX lie for the /S switch. Remove the /S switch because it coflicts with the LANtastic Server program. /L switch Look for /L:X o the MSCDEX lie (where X is ay drive letter from A to Z). This chages the drive desigatio for the CD-ROM. For istace, the CD-ROM is typically D. If the MSCDEX lie says /L:E the the drive desigatio has bee chaged to E. Disk drive type The shared resource for the CD-ROM that has bee set up i NET_MGR uder Shared Resource Maagemet has the wrog disk drive type specified. Press Eter o the shared resource ad look at the disk drive type. It should read CD-ROM. If it does t, highlight it ad press Eter. A list will pop up. Select CD-ROM. Restart the computer ad test agai.
