5 Itroductio C H A P T E R 1 D rago NaturallySpeakig let you talk to your computer istead of typig. As you talk, your words are trascribed oto your scree ad ito your documets or messages. Talkig to a computer while it types what you say is called dictatig. You ca dictate, rather tha type, ito ay program that accepts text. You ca use Drago to: Compose letters, memos, ad sed messages Cut ad paste iside your documets as well as revise ad format text. Just thik about what you wat to say, ad the say it ito the microphoe. Eter data ito forms or spreadsheets. (Available i Professioal ad higher editios) Most people ca dictate umbers faster tha they ca type. Usig Drago Professioal or higher editios, you ca create custom voice commads to let you move from field to field o your form by voice. Work o the Web Search the Web, access iformatio, ad avigate Web pages by speakig URLs ad liks. Start programs ad ope meus. Use hadheld recorders to dictate while you are away from your computer. 6 Itroductio About this guide This guide covers all editios of Drago. Most iformatio preseted applies to all the editios, ad the maua otes ay differeces betwee the editios. Sample text appears i a differet typeface, with puctuatio i square brackets. 3 This guide applies to the all Eglish dialects that ship with Drago: US Eglish UK Eglish Australia Eglish Idia Eglish Southeast Asia Eglish US Eglish uses US spellig, puctuatio, ad time ad currecy formats. We recommed US Eglish for Caadia users sice this dialect formats umbers (icludig times, telephoe umbers, ad currecy) i North America formats. All other dialects use UK spellig, puctuatio, ad time ad currecy formats (some umber settigs deped o your Widows Regioal Settigs). Where multiple dialects are used i dictatio examples, those dialects appear i a differet fot style. Tips ad otes appear like this: NOTE: If you pause correctly, but Drago still types a commad as dictatio, you ca force it to recogize what you say as a commad by holdig dow the CTRL key. With Numbers Mode o, Drago tries to iterpret everythig you say as a umber. If you dictate words, the results will be upredictable. However, you ca still avigate meus ad switch betwee programs by voice whe Numbers Mode is o. What should I expect from Drago? Oe reaso to use Drago is to boost your productivity. Aother is to reduce the strai usig a computer puts o hads, eyes, shoulders, etc. Maybe you like the idea of beig able to lea back i your chair, put your feet up o the desk, ad still get work doe. Drago works by usig sophisticated acoustic ad statistical models; it ca quickly adapt to you i various ways, becomig familiar with the soud of your voice as well as the particular words you use i your dictatios. For best results, you should develop simple habits such as positioig your microphoe cosistetly, dictatig puctuatio, speakig clearly ad evely, pausig briefly before ad after voice commads, ad takig advatage of the easy tools Drago offers to optimize accuracy: for istace, addig to Drago's vocabulary your ow jargo, acroyms, phrases or words for which you wat a special prouciatio or spellig. Drago lets you import lists of vocabulary etries all at oce; you ca eve poit Drago to texts that are similar to what you pla to dictate ad it will quickly "study" them. Persoalizig Drago's vocabulary is easy, ad very importat for productivity, sice it preempts recogitio errors. (If a word you dictate is ot i Drago's vocabulary, the software caot trascribe it.) Properly correctig Drago's errors will also help it lear. The more you use Drago, the more opportuities the software will have to adapt to you, both i terms of acoustics ad i terms of laguage. 3

8 Itroductio Do I still eed my keyboard ad mouse? Although you ca use Drago to do almost everythig o your computer by voice, some thigs are still easier to do usig the mouse or keyboard. If usig a mouse ad keyboard is a optio for you, try experimetig with usig your voice ad usig your hads for differet tasks, to see what works best. What if I ca t use a keyboard ad mouse? If usig a mouse ad keyboard is ot a optio, Chapter 4, Workig o Your Desktop o page 47. 4

9 Istallatio ad User Profile Creatio T C H A P T E R 2 his chapter presets how to istall ad set up Drago, ad the how to trai Drago to uderstad your voice. The istallatio process checks to make sure your system meets the miimum system requiremets eeded for Drago. These system requiremets are listed i the iformatio that came with your copy of Drago. If your system does ot meet these requiremets, Drago will ot be istalled. Multiple users o oe computer Drago is licesed o a per idividual basis. You are permitted to istall the software o more tha oe computer (such as o a desktop ad a laptop computer, or o a work ad a home computer), but you caot use the software cocurretly o more tha oe computer. You are permitted to create multiple voice profiles, so log as each voice profile is for you. If someoe else wats to create a voice profile, that perso must purchase a separate Drago licese. Volume licese agreemets are available. Pluggig i the microphoe To use Drago, you will eed to plug i your microphoe. If you are ot sure how to plug i your microphoe, cosult the documetatio that came with your microphoe. NOTE: If you already have speakers for your computer, you ca also use these to playback recorded speech istead of your headphoes. 5

10 Istallatio ad User Profile Creatio What you should kow before istallig Istallig Drago to a custom locatio The default istallatio directory for Drago is: C:\Program Files\Nuace\NaturallySpeakig11 Durig the istallatio procedure, you ca choose to istall Drago to a differet directory or drive o your machie. Choosig a differet directory durig istallatio oly istalls the Drago program files to that locatio. Regardless of where you istall the Drago program files, Drago always istalls the laguages ad vocabularies that you selected durig the istallatio to the C: drive, as well as creatig the locatio where your users profiles will be created. These profiles ca cosume a large amout of disk space o your C: drive. For more iformatio o the Drago istallatio directories, see Versio 11.5 File Structure o page 28. You ca customize your istallatio to reduce the amout of disk space used o your C: drive by ot istallig uwated laguages ad vocabularies. For more iformatio, see Istallig software Custom Istallatio o page 10. Istallig o Widows Vista/Widows 7 Drago Versio 11.5 is compatible with all editios of Widows Vista. If you upgrade a machie from a previous versio of Widows to Widows Vista/Widows 7 ad that machie has Versio 9.x, 10.x or 11.0 of Drago istalled, that versio of Drago will ot work after upgradig to Widows Vista. All your user profiles from these previous versios remai itact ad ca be upgraded whe you istall Drago Versio 11.5 or higher. 6

11 User Guide Coexistece with other Drago products Coexistece with previous versios of Drago You ca have oly oe versio of Drago istalled o your system. NOTE: Ruig Versio 9.x, 10.x, or 11.0 cocurretly with Versio 11.5 is ot supported. Coexistece with the Drago SDK Cliet Editio You ca istall Drago SDK Cliet Editio 11 o the same machie where Drago 11 is istalled. I additio, Drago 11 ad Drago SDK Cliet Editio 11 ca share users ad vocabularies. You ca oly ru oe product at a time. For example, if you are ruig Drago, you caot ru ay of the SDK Cliet tools or samples. NOTE: Coexistece of Versio 11.5 with Drago SDK Cliet Editio Versio 9.x or 10.x is ot supported. Before istallig the software Before istallig, modifyig, or upgradig Drago: 1 Close all ope applicatios. 2 Tur off or disable ativirus software; the istallatio process ca sometimes trigger a false virus report. NOTE: You must have Admiistrator rights to istall or uistall Drago o Widows XP, Widows Vista, or Widows 7. Admiistrator rights are ot required to create a user profile or use the software after istallatio. O Widows XP Professioal, Widows Vista, ad Widows 7 systems, if as a admiistrator you wat to create a Drago user profile for a Widows limited user (user with restricted privileges), you must log o usig that Widows limited user accout before creatig the Drago user profile. 7

12 Istallatio ad User Profile Creatio If you create a Drago user profile for a limited user while logged i as a Widows admiistrator, the limited user will ot be able to access that user profile. These restrictios also apply to a upgrade istallatio. 3 Choose the type of istallatio to carry out. Choose Istallatio Type Choose whether to istall the etire product or oly particular features of the product, as explaied i the ext sectio. You ca also carry out a MSI istallatio. Refer to the olie Drago System Admiistrator Guide PDF or Help file for details. Choosig type of istallatio Whe you istall Drago, you ca either do a complete (typical) istallatio or a custom istallatio. Nuace recommeds you do a complete istallatio uless you are experieced with the product. The table below tells more about each istallatio type. TYPE Typical/ Complete Custom DESCRIPTION Istalls all optios ad speech profiles. Requires the maximum disk space. Lets you select particular optios ad vocabularies to istall. Ca greatly reduce the disk space required. Durig a custom istallatio, i the Professioal editio, you ca modify settigs that are the applied to all user profiles created with this istallatio, icludig Widows limited accout users. NOTE: If you decide ot to istall some Drago compoets by selectig Custom istallatio, you ca istall them later by ruig the Setup program agai ad choosig Modify. If you are istallig the product for multiple users, you should choose a Custom istallatio rather tha a Typical/Complete istallatio. To carry out a custom istallatio, proceed to Istallig software Custom Istallatio o page 10. 8

If the istallatio does ot start automatically, use Widows Explorer to fid ad double-click setup.exe o the DVD. NOTE: Widows Vista: Whe you start the istallatio o Widows Vista, you may see the message sayig A program eeds your permissio to cotiue. Click Cotiue to start the istallatio. 2 After the Widows Istaller begis, it istalls two software packages if they are ot already istalled: Visual C++ Versio 9.0 Rutime 3 After the Wizard begis, click Next to proceed to the Licese Agreemet page. Read the text ad select I accept the terms..., the click Next. 4 Eter your User Name ad Orgaizatio, ad the Serial Number supplied to your istallatio. 5 (Optioal) Whe the Setup Type page appears, click the Chage butto ad choose where to istall the product. If o earlier versios of Drago are istalled o your system, the default directory is: C:\Program Files\Nuace\NaturallySpeakig11 For a list of directories created by istallatio, see Versio 11.5 File Structure o page While you are still o the Setup Type page, select Typical. 7 profileclick Istall to start the istallatio. 9

(If you are prompted to restart your computer, restart it ow.) 9 Select Start > All Programs > Drago NaturallySpeakig 11.5 > Drago NaturallySpeakig The DragoBar appears o your desktop. 10(optioal) If you have users from Versio 9.x or 10.x that you would like to upgrade before proceedig, refer to Upgradig User Profiles o page If you have o previously existig users, the Profile Creatio wizard starts immediately after you ru the product. Proceed to Creatig your user profile o page 16 to set up a user profile, the cotiue as istructed, to trai that user profile. You are ow ready to create a user profile, as explaied uder Creatig your user profile o page 16. Istallig software Custom Istallatio To istall portios of Drago or to istall it for multiple user profiles: 1 Isert the Drago DVD ito your DVD drive. NOTE: If you decide ot to istall some Drago compoets by selectig Custom istallatio, you ca istall them later by ruig the Setup program agai ad choosig Modify. 7 Click Next ad you see a tree where you ca select ay particular feature of the product ad click the dow arrow to its left to choose where/whe to istall it: Istall ow, o local hard drive Istall ow, with all subfeatures o local hard drive Istall whe it is eeded o a just-i-time basis These optios are particularly useful for istallig multiple laguages ad/or multiple vocabularies. 11

16 Istallatio ad User Profile Creatio For example, see the selectios for the Southeast Asia Eglish vocabulary show i the illustratio below. Istallig other laguages, dialects, ad specialized vocabularies To istall user files for the other laguages or dialects supplied with your editio, choose Custom o the Setup Type page. The user files for each laguage or dialect cotai both spelligs ad prouciatios specific to that regio. For example, users who wish to dictate US Eglish spelligs icludig users with accets should istall the US (America) Eglish user files. 8 Click Next agai ad, if you do ot have the Professioal editio, skip to the ext step. Otherwise, choose ay check boxes uder Additioal optios to have additioal dialog boxes pop up at the ed of the istallatio, where you ca make chages that affect all users dictatig o this computer. OPTION DESCRIPTION Modify the applicatio s settigs for all users Displays the Optios dialog box at the ed of the istallatio; here you set several optios for all user profiles at oce (see olie Help for details). Useful for a istallatio i a shared area; for example, i a coferece room where multiple professioals could dictate. Modify the admiistrative settigs 12

17 User Guide OPTION 9 Click Next. DESCRIPTION Displays the Admiistrative Settigs dialog box at the ed of the istallatio, where you set up the Roamig User feature, where to backup your files, ad who ca modify commads/vocabularies. Modify the formattig optios Displays Auto-Formattig dialog box at ed of istallatio, where you apply uiform formattig to all documets dictated at this istallatio; for example, formats for dates, times, ad phoe umbers. You also set whether to expad cotractios, apply abbreviatios, ad isert commas automatically. See olie Help for more details. 10Click Istall to start the istallatio. 11Whe the istallatio completes, proceed with ay of the followig sectios that apply to your custom istallatio: Modifyig applicatio settigs for all users o page 14 Modifyig admiistrative settigs o page 14 Modifyig formattig optios for all users o page 15 12Whe you are prompted to register the product, select oe of the registratio optios. 13Click OK to register the product ad click it agai to proceed. 14Check Yes, check for program updates after the setup completes to dowload ay updates after the setup completes ad click Fiish to complete the istallatio. 15If you chose to upgrade user profiles earlier, whe the message about upgradig your user profiles pops up, click OK. (The message might tell you that the istallatio will ot be complete util after your system is restarted.) 16If you were told you eed to reboot i order to complete the istallatio, reboot your computer ow. 13

18 Istallatio ad User Profile Creatio 17Select Start > All Programs > Drago NaturallySpeakig 11.5 > Drago NaturallySpeakig 11.5 or click o the Drago desktop ico. 18If you have users from Versio 9.x, 10.x or 11.0 that you would like to upgrade before proceedig, refer to Upgradig User Profiles o page 26. Otherwise, if you have o previously existig users, the Profile Creatio wizard starts immediately ad you ca create a user profile as explaied uder Creatig your user profile o page 16. Modifyig applicatio settigs for all users If you checked off Modify the applicatio s settigs for all users durig a custom istallatio, the Optios dialog box opes immediately after the istallatio completes. NOTE: If you did a typical istallatio, ope the Optios dialog box by ruig Drago ad selectig Tools > Optios. I the Optios dialog box, you see several tabs you ca use to set up various aspects of dictatig with the product: Correctio Commads View Hot keys Playback/ Text-to-speech For more iformatio o each tab, see the olie Help. Modifyig admiistrative settigs If you checked Modify the admiistrative settigs durig a custom istallatio, the Admiistrative Settigs dialog box opes immediately after the istallatio eds. NOTE: If you did a typical istallatio, ope the Admiistrative Settigs dialog box by ruig Drago without opeig a user ad selectig Tools > Admiistrative Settigs. I the Admiistrative Settigs dialog box, you see these tabs: Roamig To set up roamig users. Miscellaeous Data Miscellaeous To create backup/distributio directories ad cotrol who ca modify custom commads. 14

19 User Guide Scheduled Tasks To schedule voice recogitio optimizatio ad data collectio for improved accuracy, ad let users modify the schedule. For details, refer to the Help by clickig the Help butto. Modifyig formattig optios for all users If you chose to modify formattig optios o the Custom Setup page durig a custom istallatio, the Auto-Formattig dialog box opes after the istallatio completes. NOTE: If you did ot do a custom istallatio, to set up formattig: Ru Drago, ope a user, ad select Tools > Formattig. The Auto-Formattig dialog box for all versios of Drago NaturallySpeakig appears as show below. Choose the optios to apply to your dictated documets. 15

20 Istallatio ad User Profile Creatio Creatig your user profile Before you ca begi usig Drago, you must let Drago create a user profile for each perso who is dictatig. Your user profile stores acoustic iformatio about your voice that Drago uses to recogize what you say. This profile also stores ay chages you make to the stadard vocabulary ay special words, ames, acroyms, ad abbreviatios you add. Whe you lauch the software for the first time, the Profile Creatio wizard starts ad leads you through creatig your user profile: NOTE: If you upgraded a sigle user from a earlier versio, Drago opes that user s profile. If you upgraded multiple users, it displays profiles for all upgraded users i the Ope User dialog box. To create a user profile: 1 I the Creatig a user profile page, click Next i the lower right corer to proceed. 2 Proceed through the wizard, fillig i the iformatio it requests ad clickig Next to proceed. 16

21 User Guide Whe the wizard asks for your ame, you ca eter your first ame oly, a ickame, or your first ad last ame. The wizard asks for your age to help Drago work with vocal differeces it associates with differet age rages. The wizard also asks for regio of the world you live i to help Drago iterpret your speech based o regioal differeces. 3 Whe the Help Drago uderstad how your proouce words page appears, select your accet. The accets you ca choose from are: Stadard Select if your accet is ot covered by aother choice or your are ot sure which accet to select. Australia acceted Eglish British acceted Eglish Idia acceted Eglish Ilad Norther US (Great Lakes area) Upstate New York through the Chicago area SEAsia acceted Eglish South East Asia Souther US Most of Souther Uited States, icludig Texas Spaish acceted Eglish Determiig your ow accet ca be difficult. For example, say you grew up i oe part of the Uited States but have lived log eough i aother part to lesse your origial regioal accet. If you have ay doubt about pickig a accet, select Stadard ad allow Drago to lear your accet. If you do ot select a specific accet (i other words, you select the Stadard accet), you may wat to perform Acoustic Optimizatio after usig the product for several hours. Acoustic Optimizatio updates your user profile with accumulated acoustic data from ay correctios ad additioal traiig you may have doe. Ruig Acoustic Optimizatio will icrease your overall accuracy. Oce you have selected a specific accet for a user, you caot chage it later. Drago Versio 11.5 lets you create ad trai users i multiple laguages. If you have purchased a editio with support for more tha oe laguage, you ca add laguages by later choosig Custom durig the istallatio ad havig the Drago DVD available to istall the laguage files durig the process of creatig user profiles. 4 Whe the How do you talk to your computer? page appears, select your type of microphoe from the list of Microphoes. If you record your speech usig a recordig device, select a recorder from the list of Recorders. 5 I the Review your choices page, be sure the iformatio is correct before you proceed. 6 Drago automatically chooses a speech model to use as the foudatio for your idividual user profile. It also selects the vocabulary it uses to recogize words correctly based ot oly o their soud, but also o their cotext. However, if you wat to select a particular speech model ad vocabulary, you ca click the Advaced butto ad i the Choose models page select a: Speech model from the drop-dow list for Speech model. Drago uses the speech model to adapt to your voice durig traiig. Drago automatically recommeds the type of speech model ad vocabulary that is appropriate for your computer s speed/memory. Usually, you should follow Drago s recommedatio Type of vocabulary from the Vocabulary type list: Medium Requires at least 512 MB of RAM. Large Requires at least 1 GB of RAM. 18

Settig up/positioig your microphoe Whe Drago fiishes creatig your user profile, it displays the Positio your microphoe properly page, where it begis to lead you through the process of settig up your microphoe. Followig the wizard s istructios, positio your microphoe. Positioig the microphoe correctly is importat. If the microphoe is out of place, Drago might ot be able to hear you clearly ad make mistakes. Cosistet positioig is also importat. Make sure that you positio the microphoe the same way each time you dictate. Here are some tips o usig particular types of microphoes: Usig a headset microphoe Positio the microphoe about a half-ich (approximately the width of your thumb) from your mouth ad a little off to the side. The microphoe should ot touch your mouth, but it ca be almost touchig your lips. If you eed to move the microphoe out of the way, lift the boom up ad over your head, rather tha bedig it out of positio or removig the headset. Usig a hadheld microphoe Hold the microphoe oe to three iches from your mouth ad a little off to the side. 19

Checkig microphoe volume/soud quality After you have positioed the microphoe ad clicked Next, you see the Drago will adjust your volume page. 1 Click the Start Volume Check butto ad the read aloud the text displayed i the box. 2 Whe the program beeps to idicate it has fiished checkig the volume, click Next. 3 Whe the Drago will test the quality of your soud system page appears, click Start Quality Check ad the read aloud the text displayed i the box. 4 The program beeps whe it has fiished evaluatig the soud quality of your system. If Drago displays Passed, click Next to cotiue. NOTE: Widows Vista or XP: If you get a Soud level is too low error while creatig a Drago user profile, to boost the microphoe s volume: 1. Select Start > Cotrol Pael > Soud ad Audio Devices. 2. O the Voice tab, click the Volume... butto uder Voice recordig to ope the Recordig Cotrol dialog box. 3. Performig traiig either durig or after creatig a user profile ehaces your recogitio accuracy. I iitial traiig you read aloud for several miutes from oe of the available texts. NOTE: For iformatio o traiig a mobile user, see the olie help. If you skipped traiig earlier to ope a user profile, from the DragoBar meu, select Profile > Ope User Profile ad select your ame i the list; the click Ope to proceed. Sice you have ot completed traiig, optios for Traiig appear. To trai a ew user: 1 Whe the Read text aloud to trai Drago page of the wizard appears, choose from these traiig optios: Show text with promptig Show text without promptig Skip traiig (ot recommeded) 2 I the Read Traiig Text page of the wizard, click Go. 3 If you chose the first traiig optio (Show text with promptig): A yellow arrow showig you where to start readig appears. Click Go ad begi readig the text. To take breaks while you re traiig the program, click Pause. NOTE: To advace through the first two screes, you must say the seteces without pausig. For the rest of the screes, it s okay to pause i the middle of a setece. Whe the words chage color, it meas the computer has heard ad recogized them. 21

Otherwise, click Next to cotiue. 4 If you chose the secod traiig optio (Show text without promptig): I the Read Traiig Text page, uder Choosig text to read, choose a text to read aloud ad click Next. Whe the Text Display page appears, choose how you wat to read the text, from the scree or from a prited page. If you choose to read from a prited page, click Prit to prit the text. Click Next to cotiue. If you chose to read the text from the scree, the Speakig to the computer page appears ad advises you to positio your microphoe. After you positio your microphoe, click Trai to begi. I the Speakig to the Computer popup, click Begi Traiig ad read the text i the box. Click Next page to proceed from page to page. 5 Whe the list pops up, choose a text to read aloud ad click OK. You eed to read for oly about 5 miutes to trai Drago to recogize your voice. You ca take breaks durig this traiig by clickig Pause. Do t worry if you make mistakes or laugh. You should try to read exactly what you see o the scree, but it s okay if you read somethig icorrectly. The computer either igores the mistake or positios the yellow arrow at the begiig of the text for you to reread it. The progress bar shows how much text is left to dictate. NOTE: Durig traiig, dictatig puctuatio is ot ecessary. 6 Whe you ve read eough, the Traiig wizard displays a cogratulatios message. Click OK ad Drago starts adaptig to your voice. 22

Schedulig tuig processes helps Drago lear from you ad makes your dictatio more accurate. 1 I the Let Drago automatically improve your accuracy page, to have Drago periodically tue your user profile to improve your accuracy, be sure to check the Automatically improve accuracy check box. If you do ot chage the schedules, by default Drago iitiates Acoustic tuig every Moday at 2 AM ad Laguage Model tuig every day at 3 AM. 2 If you wat to have Drago tue your user profile at a differet time or more or less ofte, click the Chage Schedule butto ad, i the Select Time ad Frequecy dialog box, set the schedules o both the Acoustics ad Laguage Model tabs. The schedules do ot have to be the same. As a rule, you should try to ru these processes whe you are ot dictatig ad ru the Laguage Model tuig more ofte. 3 Be sure that you check the Eable check box o both the Acoustics ad Laguage Model tabs or the tuig processes occur o the default schedule, rather tha the schedule you set. 4 Click Next to cotiue. Upgradig User Profiles If you chose to upgrade existig users durig the istallatio, the User Upgrade Wizard appears the first time you ru Versio NOTE: If you do ot wat to upgrade users right ow, you ca exit from the wizard ad do it later. Otherwise, you ca start the User Upgrade Wizard from the Widows Start meu at ay time. To upgrade existig users: 1 To start the User Upgrade Wizard, select Start > All Programs > Drago NaturallySpeakig 11.5 > Drago NaturallySpeakig Tools > Upgrade Users. The User Upgrade Wizard appears. 2 O the Select Users to Upgrade page, modify the list of users to iclude users that you wat to upgrade. The wizard starts by icludig all users i the curret folder as cadidates to upgrade. You add users to the list by clickig the Add butto ad browsig for additioal users i other locatios. You remove users from the list by selectig them ad clickig the Remove butto. After the list cotais oly the users you wat to upgrade, click Next. 26

If you do ot set a locatio, Drago places the profiles i the default locatio (see Versio 11.5 File Structure o page 28). 5 (Optioal) If you wat to make chages to the user locatios, base vocabularies, ad/or acoustic models, click the Advaced butto ad the Advaced Optios dialog box opes. I this dialog box, you ca make fier adjustmets to how the wizard upgrades particular users. You see a list of the users beig upgraded. For each user you see the user ame, old locatio, vocabulary, ad oe or more acoustic models. Whe you click o the locatio lie of a user i the list, the New Locatio text box below the list becomes available. You ca click Browse ad select a ew locatio. Whe you click o the vocabulary lie of a user i the list, the New Base Vocabulary text box below the list becomes available. You ca choose a ew base vocabulary from the drop-dow list. Whe you click o the acoustic model lie of a user i the list, the New Acoustic Model text box below the list becomes available. Make sure your text isertio poit is at the start of the ew documet. DragoPad You ca use the DragoPad, a simple word processor icluded with Drago. To ope the DragoPad, from the Tools meu o the DragoBar, click DragoPad. TIP: Remember to click i the widow you wat to talk to before you speak. Start talkig. As you speak, Drago 11.5 idicates that it is processig by displayig a small Drago logo at your isertio poit, ad whe you pause, your dictated words appear i your documet. Our research shows that this eables may users to dictate better, without beig distracted by seeig the prelimiary results accumulatig i the Results Box, as i previous versios. The traditioal Results Box is still available from the View tab of the Optios dialog box. (From What s ew) Do t worry about mistakes at this poit; Drago improves as you use it. Usig Natural Puctuatio Drago ca automatically add periods ad commas at the appropriate places i your dictatio without you havig to explicitly speak that puctuatio. The Natural Puctuatio feature ca be useful i helpig you get used to dictatio by focusig o what you are sayig rather tha how your speech is puctuated. Natural Puctuatio iserts oly periods ad commas. You have to dictate other puctuatio marks. Eve with Natural Puctuatio tured o, you ca still dictate periods ad commas. As you become more adept at dictatio ad wat more 33

NOTE: You ca tur Natural Puctuatio o ad off by voice by sayig "autopuctuatio o" ad "autopuctuatio off" or by selectig Tools > Auto-Formattig Optios from the meu of the DragoBar ad clickig Automatically add commas ad periods. 39 User Guide Tips for dictatig text Sayig "New Paragraph" presses the ENTER key twice ad capitalizes the ext word you dictate. To erase the last thig you said, say Scratch That. You ca repeat Scratch That to udo a sequece of phrases. To udo the effects of a commad, say Udo That. If Udo That fails to udo a actio, try repeatig the commad util you completely udo the operatio. To stop a recogitio i progress (ad tur the microphoe off), click the small red butto iside the Results Box. You ca chage the very last phrase you spoke by sayig Bold That, Cap That, Correct That, ad so o; you do ot have to select the text first. To remove a trailig space after a word, you ca say Delete Previous Character. You ca create a spoke form for words you prefer ot to say aloud. For example, you ca create a commad that types Sookums wheever you say Mary's ickame. To clear (deselect) your last selectio, say Uselect That. For iformatio o correctig ay mistakes, see Chapter 5, Correctig ad Editig o page 69. Usig the Dictatio Box Normally you ca dictate ad use Drago voice commads i ay text widow of ay applicatio. However, you may occasioally fid a applicatio or a specific widow i a applicatio where some voice commads wo t work or wo t work cosistetly. I these situatios, you ca use a special widow, called the Dictatio Box. You use the Dictatio Box to dictate ad edit text i these o-stadard widows without the difficulties you might otherwise experiece. 35
