1 PAHO INTERNSHIP PROGRAM HEALTH SYSTEMS BASED ON PRIMARY HEALTH CARE STRATEGIC INFORMATION FOR BLOOD SERVICES The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recognizes the importance of a new generation of public health leaders who have an understanding of global health issues and the role of international organizations in achieving the MDGs and other health issues. In this regard, the PAHO Internship Program trains young and energetic individuals entering the public health field and interested in providing services to the Organization on a voluntary basis, also known as internships/practicums. PAHO interns are trainees matched with appropriate technical units based upon the individual s interests and skills. Placements are in the Washington, DC headquarters or one of the PAHO country offices or scientific centers in the Region of the Americas and the Caribbean. OBJECTIVES In September 2005, the 46th Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) approved the Regional Plan of Action for Transfusion Safety , whose purpose is to contribute to the reduction of mortality and to the improvement of patient care in Latin America and the Caribbean by making safe blood for transfusion available in a timely manner for all patients who need it. The Regional Plan has the following objectives: a) Assure appropriate collection and preparation of blood components in sufficient quantities to treat the patients who need blood transfusions; b) Assure timely access to blood components for the patients who need blood transfusions; c) Assure the highest level of safety of blood products to avoid the transmission of infectious diseases and other untoward effects associated with transfusions d) Promote the appropriate clinical use of blood e) Improve the efficiency of national resources In order to achieve its objectives, the Regional Plan adopted the following four strategies: 1. Planning and management of the national blood network system 2. Promotion of voluntary blood donation 3. Quality assurance 4. Appropriate use of blood and blood components PAHO published a document that summarizes the situation of national blood programs from 2006 to 2009, using the updated data furnished to PAHO by the national health authorities. This document was used as an input for the evaluation of the implementation of the Regional Plan of Action for Transfusion Safety Adhering to the criteria of the PAHO Strategic Plan , 37 countries or territories are considered, including the British Overseas Territories and the Dutch Overseas Caribbean Territories. In order to have all the inputs required to help us for the elaboration of the new Regional Plan of Action for the 4 or 5 coming years; we need the data of blood services for the years 2010 and INTERNS RESPONSIBILITIES
2 Taking into consideration the previous information, the objectives of the internship are: 1. To recollect and analyze the data for the Blood Services in the countries of the Region: i. To follow up with the countries to send the requested data; ii. To elaborate a data base (excel or other program) that permits the analysis of the variables by country, sub region and a consolidated region; iii. Comparative analysis between countries at regional level, sub regional level and between sub regions. 2. To elaborate tables and graphics with the information of the exhaustive analyses of the data 3. Narrative analytic report REQUIREMENTS - Graduate degree student in Public Health and/or Epidemiology - Graduate degree student in Public Health and good knowledge on data bases and statistics - Minimum of 20 years of age - Fluent in English and working knowledge of Spanish - Strong writing, research, and organizational skills - Strong knowledge of information technology - Self-motivated, resourceful, a team player DURATION - 4 or 6 months HOW TO APPLY? 3 PAHO INTERNSHIP PROGRAM HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT/TEMPORARY STAFFING The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recognizes the importance of a new generation of public health leaders who have an understanding of global health issues and the role of international organizations in achieving the MDGs and other health issues. In this regard, the PAHO Internship Program trains young and energetic individuals entering the public health field and interested in providing services to the Organization on a voluntary basis, also known as internships/practicums. Placements are in the Washington, DC headquarters or one of the PAHO country offices or scientific centers in the Region of the Americas and the Caribbean OVERALL DESCRIPTION OF WORK Under the supervision of the direct supervision of the HRM Specialist, the intern s technical assistance will mainly focus on the following action items: THE INTERNSHIP AND PRACTICUM PROGRAM M AR K E T ING: Promote the program at academic institutions and others. Design promotional items to be distributed to PAHO staff, universities and other institutions. C OMMUNICATION: Work with PAHO staff to collect Terms of Reference and to put together information so that it is cohesive. Develop information packages that will inform the interns and PAHO managers of expectations, upcoming deadlines, and other information that is necessary. C OORDINATION: Be the focal point for interns activities and visits to international organizations. Assist the team with the implementation of the program at the Country level more specifically French speaking counties. L E AR N AND USE W EBSITE UPDATING TOOLS: Gain skills in expanding existing websites, and work with team to recommend and assist with installing the content. P R OCE SS DEVELOPMENT O PE R AT IONS: Systematize the process of updating the sites so that other staff and interns may follow a schedule and process that is clear and straightforward. SPECIAL PROJECTS DATA C OL L ECTION: Work closely with HRM team member to collect, review and analyze processes used in HRM. STANDARDIZATION OF PROCEDURES: After analyzing all procedures, record the most efficient and effective ones and standardize them. W RITING: Assist with writing of reports and articles. QUALIFICATIONS: Strong planning and organizing skills Excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and Spanish Creative and Technical Writing skills Proficiency in computer software Microsoft Office and Database Marketing skills Ability to multi-task Effective problem-solving

In this regard, the PAHO Internship Program trains young and energetic individuals entering the public health field and interested in providing services to the Organization on a voluntary basis, also known as internships/practicums. PAHO interns are trainees matched with appropriate technical units based upon the individual s interests and skills. Placements are in the Washington, DC headquarters or one of the PAHO country offices or scientific centers in the Region. OBJECTIVE: PAHO s Office of Gender, Diversity and Human Rights (GDR) provides technical cooperation and assistance to PAHO s technical areas, country offices, and Member States to promote gender and ethnic equality, human rights, and bioethics, as well as the participation of stakeholders in the development and monitoring of health policies and programs. GDR seeks to identify and reduce the inequities between women and men of all ethnic groups with regard to health status and its determinants, and to promote ethical standards and the right to health, including access to quality health care, and to decision-making. Under the supervision of the Specialist, Gender Mainstreaming and Cultural Diversity, the intern will undertake the following tasks: TASKS: 1. Develop factsheets or briefs of the finalist and winning experiences of the Best Practices in Gender and Health competition, in Spanish. 2. Assist with the activities related to Virtual Courses on Gender and Health, as needed. 3. Draft translations from English to Spanish (or vice versa) of short documents or s. 4. Assist with other program activities related to GDR, as needed. REQUIREMENTS: Enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate program concentrating in a field relevant to PAHO s work (public health, public administration, social sciences) Experience or knowledge of gender, ethnicity and human rights issues an asset. Minimum of 20 years old Fluent in Spanish and working knowledge of English Excellent writing and research skills, with an ability to synthesize complex information Strong interpersonal skills, a team player Self-motivated, organized, resourceful Evidence of health insurance coverage Note: Interns must commit to a minimum of 8 weeks (maximum of 6 months) with a minimum of 20 hours/week. 7 PAHO INTERNSHIP PROGRAM KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND COMMUNICATIONS INTERNAL COMMUNICATION The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recognizes the importance of a new generation of public health leaders who have an understanding of global health issues and the role of international organizations in achieving the MDGs and other health issues. In this regard, the PAHO Internship Program trains young and energetic individuals entering the public health field and interested in providing services to the Organization on a voluntary basis, also known as internships/practicums. OBJECTIVE: The Knowledge Management and Communications (KMC) area of PAHO establishes the principles and practice of knowledge management and communication as fundamental to public health and a key component of technical cooperation and capacity building. Within KMC, the intern will provide support to Internal Communications. This makes this internship a unique opportunity. It will provide the privilege to meet and interview leaders and decision makers in the area of public health in the Americas. He/she will be exposed to a variety of actors, initiatives and approaches that will surely mark and advance her/his professional development. INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Gather, write and edit content for internal communication use, acting as a reporter, interviewer, script writer, videographer and photographer, through contacts with staff, analysis of documents and participation in meetings and events. 2. Produce news items, features, and occasionally photos and videos, among other formats, and review these materials for content, accuracy, and consistency in terminology and style. 3. Answer internal communication inquiries of PAHO HQ, country offices and centers by arranging interviews, researching specific issues, and contacting technical officials. 4. Work concurrently English and Spanish, without the need for translation, interpretation or special language editing. 5. Advise KMC on changes and/or new resources for new PAHO Intranet enhancement; 6. Contribute to the overall implementation of KMC media and communication strategies. 7. Perform other related duties as assigned.
8 REQUIREMENTS: Bachelors or master degree in communication, journalism, literature, Latin American studies, international relations, public health or related area. Excellent writing skills. Native of near-native English and Spanish competency (in both languages); Experience in news media or corporate communication is a plus. Self-motivated, resourceful, a team player.
