JOB PURPOSE: The post is to lead and develop the new Fashion Design programme in the department of Art and Design. This will include the establishment of a programme delivery team, the identification of appropriate resources and the detail construction of the curriculum experience for the students. The role will include the teaching and assessment of students at undergraduate and postgraduate level as directed. This will involve preparation and delivery of teaching and learning material within the relevant modules/programmes and the formative and summative assessment of student work. The successful candidate will undertake pastoral duties in support of students as required. They will consolidate and develop external partnerships and professional/industrial relationships and engage with scholarship/ research/knowledge transfer/income generating projects as directed by the Head of Department. To provide a supportive learning environment for students to develop graduate level and subject specific skills.

2 To coordinate the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. To develop and implement teaching and learning initiatives. To contribute to postgraduate taught programmes and participate in research and research supervision. 7. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The department of Art and Design is dynamic and future-focussed, with excellent, energetic and caring staff, an innovative curriculum and diverse research interests. Our students are our central focus and they benefit enormously from the collective expertise in the department. Recent development has resulted in a new contemporary gallery / art space and staff office accommodation. There has also been significant investment in resources in book arts production, printmaking, animation and digital making technology. Work in Fine Art is long established at Chester, with Graphic Design and Photography launched in The department now offers single and combined honours in Fine Art and in Graphic Design and Photography. Currently in development is a significant expansion of provision in Fashion Design, Fashion Marketing and Communication, Animation, Product Design and Interior Design. The new provision will dramatically enhance the creative community in the department and on the Kingsway site that also supports Performing Arts and Media students studying Dance, Drama and Popular Music and Journalism. (The Media Department is otherwise based at our Warrington Campus and offers degrees in TV Production; Radio Production; Commercial Music Production; Advertising; Media Studies; Film Studies and Journalism.) The Art and Design department s postgraduate provision includes taught MA programmes in Fine Art and in Design. It has recently established an M Res in Art and Design and has four PhD students currently registered. There are currently 315 full time equivalent undergraduate and 16 postgraduates. We have 15 FTE academic staff supported by visiting lecturers, five technicians, studio mentors and an administrative staff team. The Faculty relocated in 2007 to the Kingsway site. Facilities are good and facilitate a wide range of traditional and contemporary visual arts practice. There is dedicated studio space, and technical workshop areas that include, photographic dark rooms, printmaking studio, workshop areas for wood, metal and textile making, animation and a new digital making lab. The site also includes performing arts provision and has shared facilities for video edit and sound recording and editing. Lecture Theatre and seminar spaces along with the Café and Gallery social spaces create a very lively creative environment. Library provision is good and is based on the main campus, which is a twenty minute walk away. The Department of Art and Design also oversees BA Honours and Foundation Degree provision at a number of partner FE Colleges. The Department does not itself offer Foundation Degrees. The department contributed to the recent Research Excellence Framework REF assessment of research outputs and was the highest scoring department in the university with 14% ranked at 4* and 33% of the return ranked at 3*. Some of the key contributors to this result are involved in research on narrative drawing and the department is in the process of establishing a Centre for Narrative Drawing research. This new development

3 will also support department connections made between, design, cultural economy and participatory practice and this is reflected in the public realm cultural economy research with augmented and virtual realty interests in design. Work in materiality and embodied knowledge further enhances the interdisciplinary opportunities offered. As a result the department research strategy is to: Build upon existing long standing research in cultural memory and materiality; Extend our interest to Visual Narrativity, Augmented / Virtual reality Develop Participatory Practice as an impact / dissemination tactic; Expand the number of active research staff; Develop public engagement and contribution to the cultural economy of the city and region. The means to achieve these objectives is to encourage clusters of research activity to form around Cultural Memory, Materiality, Narrative Drawing and Participatory Practice. Staff recruitment to the department supports the research strategy. The successful recruitment of Dr. Simon Grennan, Dr. Tom McGuirk, Dr. Tracy Piper-Wright, the high profile photographer Tom Wood who recently featured in BBC 4s What Artists Do All Day? Series, evidences this approach. Established research staff, are tasked to bring new and emerging researchers into research projects to build confidence and expand the range of possibilities. Dr. Grennan in collaboration with Dr. Julian Waite from Performing Arts has recently secured 200,000 AHRC funding for research into the work of Marie Duval looking at visual narrativity and performance. The success of this bid has been a catalyst for the development of the Narrative Drawing research centre proposal. Maxine Bristow s research is grounded in our relationship to textiles and she was one of 6 artists representing the UK in Cloth and Culture NOW. Particular concerns within this project included the way that textile operates as a silent witness to our repetitive routines providing an ambiguous boundary between self and not self and the importance of tactility and the continuity of touch in this relationship. Maxine s research will contribute to underlying debates around fashion, material, making, touch and cultural memory. The developments in research have been very positive and supported by a number of specific research development days. Specific attention has been given to aligning the demands of research with the developments of the teaching programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Chester Centre for Research in Arts and Media (CCRAM) is located in the Faculty of Arts and Media and forms an overarching support structure for the research activities of the faculty s three departments. By encouraging critical exploration of contemporary practice and its reception and interpretation, the Centre seeks to further the gathering body of knowledge in the areas of Art and Design, Media, and Performing Arts, and develop innovative models of best practice in the methodology and realisation of this knowledge. CCRAM is supported in the department through Maxine Bristow s role as Reader in Fine Art and her research subject panel experience. Colleagues exhibit and publish regionally, nationally and internationally, and engage in both traditional and practice based research. The department is currently engaged in a number of successful knowledge transfer and curatorial projects and has ambitions to expand this area of activity. The successful candidate will be fully committed to working in education and have a sound knowledge of the forms and practices of Fashion Design as both practical subject and academic discipline. They will be experienced as a practicing Photographer / Educator /

4 Researcher. They will have the flexibility to communicate effectively on the creation of fashion design and garments and its role in material culture. 8. WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS: 8.1 Communicating Effectively To facilitate students learning through lectures, tutorials and seminars at undergraduate, postgraduate and masters levels. To produce high quality teaching and learning material to support and develop student learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. To write and publish research papers. To contribute to the writing of course validation documents as required. To contribute to the cross-faculty development of curriculum and course materials. 8.2 Leadership and Working Collaboratively To exercise academic leadership, coordinating the efforts of colleagues to deliver module and programme objectives. Lead a new team in the development of the fashion provision. Contribute to the positive working atmosphere in the art and design department in general and the Fashion team in particular. Lead and or contribute to teams responding to external opportunities in respect of knowledge transfer/income generating initiatives. 8.3 Liaison and Networking To be an active member of relevant departmental committees. To initiate and lead short term internal networks for e.g. new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, co-ordinating teams of staff from university/department and external examiners; to oversee the development of new courses, write documentation, gain accreditation, and secure approval of new courses. To chair departmental working groups as required. Foster collaboration with external contacts, networks and partnerships including educational bodies, employers and professional bodies. Identify and develop research and/or knowledge transfer initiatives and where possible foster collaboration with external agencies and generate income as appropriate. 8.4 Delivering a High Quality Standard of Service To enhance the quality of taught and research programmes at under-graduate and/or postgraduate levels. To act upon peer observation feedback, student feedback, and external examiner feedback to maintain high quality in learning and teaching. 8.5 Effective Decision Making In the context of the role-holder s teaching duties, to make independent decisions on the content of individual learning activities and marking for student assessment purposes, and to provide advice to colleagues on such matters. To sit on student selection panels as required. To make collaborative decisions with programme teams on the content of taught and research programmes at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels. Provide advice on issues to other members of the department to influence operational decisions within the immediate work area.

5 8.6 Planning and Organising Self and Others To undertake elements of departmental leadership in areas such as organisation of staff development activities, programme leadership, assessment, students with specific learning needs, use of technology to support learning, or curriculum or student development roles. To act as module and programme leader as required, co-ordinating the work of module/ programme team to ensure modules are delivered to the standards required & co-ordinate the work of colleagues to identify & respond to students needs. To make significant and sustained contributions to the management of the subject area, including planning and resource allocation, policy development and improvement of procedures. To contribute to cross-faculty programme organisation, contributing to strategic decisions as required. To be responsible for the co-ordination of administrative duties in areas such as admissions, time-tabling, examinations, assessment of progress & student attendance. 8.7 Innovation and Improvement (Effective Problem Solving) To deal with problems e.g. a students academic progress and personal issues (e.g. responding to needs of students with learning difficulties through referral to the appropriate support departments within the University). To design new modules as required. To develop suites of new modules and contribute to overall programme design. Work with others to develop ideas for generating income and promoting the subject. 8.8 Analysis and Research To research teaching materials and to identify and utilise current best practice in the relevant subject area. 6 8.12 Team Development To undertake peer mentoring and review of colleagues. Support the learning of colleagues through coaching and mentoring Teaching and Learning Support To design inductions to modules and programmes for students, adapting delivery to suit learners needs. To design and deliver one off lectures or workshops as required, providing feedback on performance. Supervise students projects, fieldwork and placements at all levels. To develop and design course content and materials on a long term basis, ensuring compliance with the quality standards and regulations of the University and department. To conduct seminars and tutorials, introducing new methods of delivery where required, and to supervise students at all levels across the breadth and depth of the subject area. To assess students overall performance, through setting/ marking programme work, practical sessions, supervisions, fieldwork and examinations, providing appropriate feedback to students. Responsible for the overall quality auditing of course provision to identify areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement. To contribute to overall curriculum development and course design in specific area of curriculum Knowledge and Experience Qualifications Will be required to have, or achieve a Masters level qualification and membership of a relevant professional body (HEA). Will be required to obtain a doctoral level qualification or equivalent professional qualification/recognition within an agreed timescale. Experience Must have suitable expertise to deliver lectures in relevant subject area Previous teaching experience in higher education. Proven and sustained track record of contribution to the development of policy and practice in teaching and learning support. Skills/Attributes An ability to keep abreast of, and lead developments in, teaching and scholarship specific to the subject area, demonstrated through e.g. attendance at conferences, external contacts and, where appropriate, publication of research. 10 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER DEPARTMENT OF MEDIA SENIOR LECTURER IN FASHION SALARY SCALE TSR4, points 35 39, 36,309-40,847 per annum. CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT Permanent contracts will be offered to those candidates who possess both a higher degree/phd and a postgraduate HE teaching qualification/fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. A successful candidate who lacks either will be offered a fixed term contract, pending fulfilment of these conditions. RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT It is a requirement of this post that within 12 months of appointment, the post-holder should live within a 30 mile radius or within a one hour travelling time by public transport from the University. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 35 days per annum (pro-rata during the commencement and cessation years). Two extra statutory days during the Christmas period. MEDICAL EXAMINATION The successful candidate will be required to complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire and may also be required to undergo a medical examination.
