National Energy Research Center in Syria 2 NERC has been created by law No.8 for 2003 connected to the Minister of Electricity. To be responsible for the main following tasks: Conducting studies and scientific researches with respect to RE&EE. Implementing experimental pilot projects with respect to RE&EE. 2
National Energy Research Center in Syria 3 Developing policies and adopting suitable strategies to achieve optimum utilization of available energy sources especially Renewable Energies. Drafting needed legislations and law related to EE&RE. Developing and executing Energy Efficiency Projects in all sectors. Creating needed testing facilities regarding to EE&RE applications. 3
Solar Energy Potential in Syria The average solar radiant in Syria is about 5.1 kwh/m2/day. Less than 60 cloudy day/year. 4 In 1994, the Meteorological Department and Scientific Studies & Research Centre (SSRC) completed an assessment of solar energy in Syria and issued the Solar Atlas for Syria 4
Mean Annual Daily Radiation on Horizontal Surface Wh/m2 The average global horizontal solar radiant flux in Syria is approximately 5 kwh/m2/day 5 5
Daily solar radiation 6 6
Solar Energy in Syria Today's Figures There is more than (0.3) million solar heater systems installed. There is about (2) MWp PV off and on grid systems. There are several local manufacturers of solar heater systems. 7 7
Ministry Of Electricity Plan Till Year 2030 Ministry Of Electricity plan to increase the rate of sharing renewable energies to reach (10%) of total demand of energy carriers in 2030 Ministry of Electricity plan to install: 2000 M/W PV modules or producing electric energy M/W CSP for producing electric energy. 4.5 million solar heater for heating water (3.5 million domestic solar water heating system and(1) million industrial solar water heating system). 8 8
The execution of these projects is connected basically with its feasibility study, where the necessary investments for the above mentioned projects are estimated in about (13)billion EUR. The most important achievement in this area is the establishment of Syrian Ukrainian Joint Company for producing PV modules and its supplements. The production capacity of the company is about (15.9) M/W PV modules per year. The company s production of PV modules shall be installed in different locations in Syria through establishing grid connected PV plants with different capacities 9 9
Pilot projects executed by NERC 1.Solar Energy for hot water applications 2.Solar thermal applications 3.Solar PV applications 10 10
NERC Activities: Solar Energy for hot water applications: Efforts has been done to obtain government approval to establish a special governmental fund as a law for DSWHS, this law is prepared by the NERC, and it is expected to be issued soon. Implementing the first pilot project of (SWHS) for Ebn- alwaleed hospital in Homs which is belong to the Ministry of Health
Implementing SWHS for Elmouasat s hospital which is belong to the Ministry of High Education with capacity of 32 m³/day. In this project two systems flat plates and vacuum tubes have been used. To make researches and compare the performance of these systems
NERC Activities: Solar thermal applications: Coordinating with both Ministry of Health and Ministry of High Education to generalise implementing SWHS in their facilities. SWHS s have been installed in all Substations and all dormitories in the Power Plants owned by Ministry of Electricity. Working on establishing SWH System lab
Solar PV applications - solar PV water pumping filed Implemented: Systems have been installed to pump water from 3 wells in the Syrian desert, namely( wady alahmar, altleleh, abou alfawares well ) On going : To increase the awareness in the solar PV systems filed by the governmental side, NERC Prepares for (10) Solar PV Water pumping systems for Irrigation purposes in the Syrian eastern aria as a pilot projects to spread that kind of technology
- Solar PV street lighting Implemented: 50 street lighting Systems have been installed in alkolayleh forest in Latakia On going: among the japanese- syrian cooperation, (JICA) Japan international cooperation agency will illuminate part of the road Damascus-Jordanian Border in length 1.7 km using 236 solar PV street lighting systems
- Solar on grid PV systems Implemented: About (70) kw PV system have been installed on the roof of Ministry of Electricity building. On going: (6)MWp Grid Connected PV Power Plant will be carried out in Southern of Damascus (DerAli) area.( 1 MWp Experimental PV Station consist of five systems each system 200 KWp, with German Company (Sunset) ) During 2011, NERC will announce Call for Tender to install Solar PV test facility according to the International Standards
