5 The world s 1st solar thermal power station in Egypt Each collector was 62 x 4 m and was fitted with a mechanical tracker which kept it automatically tilted to appropriately absorb the sun. It was used to produce steam to power a series of large water pumps. Together they produced the equivalent of 55 horsepower and were capable of pumping an astonishing 1,600 m3 of water per minute. He planned to build more than 51,200 square Km of these solar reflectors in the Sahara but was forced to shelve the idea due to the outbreak of World War I. Frank Shuman parabolic solar collectors, Maadi 1912.

13 Polices of Implementing RE Strategy Five policies has been approved to foster the increasing of RE energy contribution as following: Public Competitive Bidding Third party access (TPA) Feed in Tariff (FIT) Net Metering Quota system Issuing tenders internationally requesting private sector to supply power from RE energy projects. Investors are allowed to build & operate RE power plants to satisfy their electricity needs or to sell electricity to other consumers though the national grid In Sep. 2014, ministry of electricity approved to apply FIT with attractive prices to encourage the private sector to invest. Also, the land will be giving with just 2% of the total power generated revenue from the plant. As well as, the customs will be 2% of the total items cost. In January 2013, EgyptERA adopted a net-metering policy that allows small-scale renewable energy projects to feed in electricity to the grid. Generated surplus electricity will be discounted from the balance through the net-metering process. heavy industries consumption will be obliged to use a percentage of its electricity consumption from RE sources. 31 WIND ENERGY Egypt enjoys excellent wind regimes, particularly in the Suez Gulf where the average wind speed reaches 10.5 m/sec. The wind energy resources are available in large regions of the Eastern & Western Deserts of the River Nile and parts of Sinai with average annual wind speed from 7 to 8 m/s. Egypt is able to have MW of capacity within wind farms, this is not far short of the electric capacity already in place ( MW in 2012) [UbiFrance, summary sheet "Renewable Energy Sector in Egypt", 2009] Source: NREA, 2011/2012
