Transforming Scotland Solar can no longer be ignored with Solar Future Business Opportunities Emerging Technologies & New Markets Ray Noble STA Solar PV Specialist National Solar Centre Associate Co-Chair of DECC Solar Strategy Group
Up until 2000 the UK were a Global leader in Solar and many demonstration projects What could have What we need to do? been? 2
Emerging PV What we need to do? Technologies Crystalline Solar continues to be developed and reduced in cost Rear Contact Cells (156mm) with 20% module efficiency on their way Dual Glass high voltage laminates Optimiser in Junction Box / AC modules Thin Film Solar CdTe and CIGS are in production Organic Thin Films appearing in the market Screen Printed Electronics being developed 3
Crystalline & What we need to do? Thin Film Crystalline is proven technology and accounts for over 90% of the Global Market Customers / Funders accept its 25 year 80% warranty Thin Film has a history of not quite making it, Amorphous Silicon has come and gone Challenge for new Thin Film Technologies is to give the necessary evidence that customers / funders require, proving it will work for 25 years Hanergy have just launched a scheme with IKEA which should help the TF market to develop 4
Solar Thermal What we need to do? Solar Thermal is about to get a Renewable Heat Incentive New market opportunities could lead to new product development 5
Solar What we need to do? Strategy The Solar Strategy Roadmap was launched earlier this month The full Strategy will be published in the Spring 2014 The Minister once again confirmed the ambition of 20GW by
What is the Solar What have we achieved recently? Strategy? Roadmap shows 7GW to 20GW by 2020 National Grid indicated 10GW can be accommodated on the Grid today but additional works will be required to connect 20GW unless storage becomes available Storage will occur within this period Storage and Smart Grids are being given Catapult status Deemed Planning for large roofs to be extended from 50kW to 5MW Registration processes by Ofgem to be speeded up 7
What have we achieved recently? The deployment of Solar is growing rapidly with over 2.7GW installed Domestic, Buildings and Fields expected to have equal shares of 20GW We are on program 2.7GW 8
Deployment Map What we need to do? (over 100kW) Majority of the larger projects are in the South and are Solar Fields 9
Solar What we need to do? Generation MCS Design Zone kwh/kwp The FIT claims are Zone 1 providing evidence Zone of the actual Zone generation Zone Zone 5W 950 Zone 5E 972 The MCS Design Zone Guide now Zone 7W 933 Zone 7E 866 published with Zone 8S 868 Zone 8E 880 increased values Zone 9S 906 Zone 9E 907 The figures for mid Zone Zone Scotland are Zone Zone similar to what was Zone Zone used previously in Zone Southern England Zone Zone kwh/kwp
Domestic Solar works New MCS Guide Market will continue to develop particularly with the continued rise in energy prices Social Housing will be a priority Will be a move from improved aesthetics and adopting integrated products 11
Commercial Solar works New MCS Guide Roofs Even lying modules at very shallow angles provides around 90% of optimum generation and in many cases modules are invisible 12
Car Park Solar works New MCS Guide Using surface car parks to generate electricity for use in buildings Charging Electric Vehicles Canopies 13
Solar Fields Solar works New MCS Guide Solar Fields still allow the land to be used for grazing sheep or providing biodiversity Market will continue to grow 14
National Solar Solar works New MCS Guide Centre The NSC was set up to provide independent, evidence based advice on Solar Based at the Eden Project in Cornwall it will link with the Universities and Customers across the UK DECC asked NSC to produce a Good Practice Guide for Large Fields (and many other reports) Performance testing of modules and systems will start in January
What have we achieved recently? Oil company now saying of Solar dominance as a Global electricity provider by 2100 It has started and we are now on a steep climb to 2100 Ex Chief Scientist, Sir David King, is now supporting a big push for Solar to provide 25% of the Worlds energy by 2025 Endless opportunities exist everywhere Nothing will stop Solar now 16
