1 Human Resources Manager Job Description Salary (FTE) Location Type of position Start date Reporting to: 35,000-40,000 full-time equivalent depending on experience Edgbaston, Birmingham Full-time, permanent As soon as possible The Bursar King Edward s School and King Edward VI High School for Girls are two of the best independent day schools in the country, sharing a leafy campus in Edgbaston, next to the University of Birmingham. Both Schools are part of the King Edward VI Foundation and have high academic standards and a rich and varied extra-curricular programme. A Overview of the role The HR Manger will provide HR advice for all employees working at both schools on the Edgbaston Campus and will work closely with the Head of HR and Payroll Services of the King Edward s Foundation, which is co-located on the Edgbaston Campus. Currently there are 320 employees on the Edgbaston Campus and the schools have 1,400 pupils on the school roll at present. The HR Manager role is a newly created role and will report to the Bursar, who is also a joint employee. The principal duties of the post will be: 1 Provision of HR advice The HR Manager will work closely with the Head of HR and Payroll Services of the King Edward s Foundation to provide HR advice to the senior teams at both Schools on their policies and procedures in general and also in specific cases. This will include: Ensuring that all members of staff have appropriate and legally compliant employment contracts Development of and regular review of employee policies and procedures (including appropriate staff conduct policy, disciplinary policy and capability policy) whilst ensuring that all staff are made aware of their statutory rights as dictated by employment legislation Regular review of pay scales and benchmarking for annual pay review Assisting managers with arrangements for the discipline, dismissal or suspension of staff in accordance with the Schools procedures Providing advice on all employment legislation to ensure that the Schools meets their legal obligations to their employees

2 2 Recruitment The HR Manager will assist and advise senior teams and their support staff at both Schools on recruitment for teaching and support staff to ensure that Safer Recruitment standards are met. This will require the HR Manager to undertake the following, in conjunction with the current team that comprises the senior team at each School and their PAs: Review all advertisements, job descriptions and person specifications prior to publication Obtain and review references Oversee process of review of application forms and references by interview team Draft letters of employment for successful candidates and work with support staff to ensure all pre-employment checks are completed and documented Co-ordinate the induction process for all new joiners in conjunction with the relevant line managers Follow up with relevant line manager to review performance prior to the end of the probationary period and confirm employment in writing once completed as appropriate Where staff who are already on the payroll increase their hours or take on additional responsibility, prepare relevant letters, notify payroll and confirm changes 3 Single Central Register of Appointments The HR Manager is responsible for ensuring that the Schools maintain a Single Central Register of Appointments that complies with current legislation. They should review the register and check the supporting records held at each location at least monthly and the week after the beginning of each school term. This will require the HR Manager to develop robust processes to monitor all joiners, leavers, volunteers and temporary workers and ensure that all staff understand their role in Safer Recruitment procedures. 4 Staff welfare The HR Manager will fulfil a key role in providing support to all staff working on the campus with respect to their welfare. This encompasses a wide range of responsibility but will include the following activities as a starter: Ensure that reliable records are maintained, including records of employee attendance, absence and sickness to identify emerging HR issues and ensure annual leave is taken Refer colleagues to Occupational Health services, School Doctor or counsellors and maintain links with providers Attend Health & Safety Committee meetings, working with the Facilities Manager and the Safety Officer, ensure that matters related to staff safety are brought to the Committees across the campus and resolved satisfactorily. Work with other senior staff both academic and support to develop and implement a programme promoting staff resilience and well-being Ensure all staff receive appropriate professional advice on HR policy and practice throughout the two Independent Schools

3 5 Staff appraisal and training The HR Manager will support Senior Management in both schools with responsibility for Professional Development and Staff Training. Specific responsibilities will include: Ensuring that an effective system of performance review occurs and that appropriate documentation is retained Assisting with the identification of training needs and booking of training courses on general topics (eg first aid, safer recruitment, manual handling, etc.) Ensuring that accurate training records are maintained for all staff 6 General The following additional duties are also required: Undertaking such training and study as required in order to stay abreast of legislation and developments relevant to the post Contributing and being responsible for relevant sections of Risk Register Attending School events as required, involving some weekend and evening working The post holder will also be expected to carry out any other duties as reasonably requested by the Bursar For an appropriately qualified and experienced individual it may be possible to agree a more flexible, or part-time, employment basis.

4 B The qualities and skills required This new post of Human Resources Manager has been created to provide the specialist knowledge and support to senior staff at both Schools in the areas of people management, recruitment, retention and welfare of all staff, both teaching and support. The post holder will be fully immersed in all areas of school life, from the cricket square to the physics laboratory, via the library, first aid, classrooms and the Dining Hall and all points in between. The ideal candidate will be an experienced, pragmatic HR generalist with a detailed understanding of current employment law and practice. The ability to think strategically and engage at senior levels in an academic environment yet act operationally is essential. The ideal candidate will be expected to show evidence of many of the following skills and qualities and this list describes the criteria that will be used in the selection process for interview. Detailed Person Specification Experience and Qualifications Essential: Strong generalist HR experience in a relevant setting ideally in a service industry Experience of developing, introducing and administering HR policies, systems and procedures Sound knowledge of relevant legislation and guidance affected the recruitment and employment of employees CIPD or other relevant Human Resources Management qualification Strong educational record Desirable: An honours degree, or equivalent competence gained through qualifications or relevant experience Experience of HR management in the education sector Personal Qualities Empathy with the aims and values of independent education An enthusiastic team player with a strong customer focus and flexible attitude Excellent command of the English language, and strong oral and written communication skills IT literate and Numerate Tough-minded but friendly, with excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with a wide range of people and as part of the Schools management team The ability to act with tact and diplomacy and discretion and to deal appropriately with confidential and sensitive information Self-starting and with strong practical problem-solving skills An efficient worker with the ability to prioritise effectively and focus on the essential whilst maintaining strong attention to detail and high levels of accuracy

5 C Terms and conditions Salary circa 35,000-40,000 Eligible to join a Contributory Group Pension Scheme 22 days holiday per year plus 8 bank holidays and 4 Governors days Eligible for discount on school fees for pupils at both King Edward s School and King Edward VI High School for Girls (subject to normal admissions procedures) Working hours: 8.30 am to 4.30 p.m. Monday to Friday with one hour lunch break. A flexible approach to working hours is essential as the post holder will be required to work the hours required to properly fulfil the duties outlined above effectively. Contractual hours may be exceeded. The Schools are both committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
