1 Edmonton Catholic Schools is now accepting applications for the position of PAINTER (Lead Hand) (Existing position) Edmonton Catholic Schools is a large urban school district whose mission is to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another. The District is comprised of over 39,000 students and 3,500 employees in 89 schools and other sites. Facilities requires a Lead Hand Painter to supervise a crew of Painters performing a wide-range of work including preparing surfaces and painting materials and performing brush, roller and spray painting for the maintenance, decoration and construction projects. The job ensures employees achieve smooth-work flow by delegating assignments, explaining procedures and assessing work. The job performs a variety of complex duties with minimal supervision. Assignments vary considerably depending on the unit served. The work requires the incumbent to hold a journeyman s ticket and demonstrate considerable expertise and working knowledge in their unit. The job requires understanding of other trades and the department activities. Work may involve procedures of a technical nature and the use of hand and power tools. This is a permanent, full-time position (40 hrs. /week) with a salary of $ /month. Position to commence as soon as possible. Job Responsibilities: Determine efficient work procedures and techniques for assigned staff to ensure timely completion of painting projects, and ensure safety standards and procedures are followed; Develop work schedules and crew assignments; inspect work areas to insure job is being completed as agreed; evaluate staff performance; Train, coach and ensure staff have necessary tools, equipment and materials to perform assignments; Assist in the inspection of painting work performed by outside contractors; Utilize brushes, rollers, and spray guns to apply the required number of coats of paints, enamels, varnishes, lacquers, or other protective or decorative materials on a wide variety of surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, plaster, brick, stucco, cement, and wallboard; Provide supervisor and project teams with technical input on painting work concerning planned construction and work projects in progress. Qualifications: High school diploma, plus a current Alberta Journeyman Painter certificate; Extensive directly related experience including overseeing the work of a crew; Thorough knowledge of paints and their properties, blending techniques and painting equipment; Knowledge of supervisory techniques, Collective Agreements, inventory control and project management techniques; Knowledge of blueprints, work layout and general knowledge of repair work; Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and Legislation, regulations governing Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and Transportation of Dangerous Goods; A valid class 5 driver s license and the ability to travel to various sites within Edmonton; Possession of a full kit of recognized basic hand tools; Ability to handle the physical demands of the job using appropriate lifting tools and techniques (constantly lifting up to 30 kilograms). The job supervises a crew of Painters in performing a wide-range of work including preparing surfaces and painting materials and performing brush, roller and spray painting for the maintenance, decoration and construction projects. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES: Normally a job has four to eight core responsibilities, each of which shows what the job is accountable for, within what framework, and what the added value is. List the core responsibilities in ascending order of importance. 1. Review project plans and blueprints and design jobs with individuals requesting work; estimates time, material, equipment and supplies needed; maintains records of operation; monitors inventories and requests supplies and equipment; 2. Determine efficient work procedures and techniques for assigned staff to ensure timely completion of painting projects, and ensure safety standards and procedures are followed 3. Develop work schedules and crew assignments; inspect work areas to insure job is being completed as agreed; evaluate staff performance; complete time sheets, accident reports, and work orders; train staff in related work assignments; 4. Utilize brushes, rollers, and spray guns to apply the required number of coats of paints, enamels, varnishes, lacquers, or other protective or decorative materials on a wide variety of surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, plaster, brick, stucco, cement, and wallboard. 5. Scrap, sand, fill, and otherwise prepare surfaces and perform complex painting work on both interior and exterior surfaces. 6. Mix colors in oil or vinyl based paints and other paint finishes to match, blend, harmonize and contrast specified colors and consistencies. 7. Provide supervisor and project teams with technical input on painting work concerning planned construction and work projects in progress. 8. Assist in the inspection of facilities for painting maintenance work and safety problems related to painting materials. 9. Assist in the inspection of painting work performed by outside contractors. 10. Record and maintain information related to materials, estimates and work orders. 11. Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards 12. Participate in project planning activities and unit meetings 1
3 JOB QUALIFICATIONS - KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, ABILITIES and SKILLS: Provide a list of the most important knowledge factors, skills and abilities including knowledge about practical procedures, specialized techniques, etc.; analytical and conceptual skills and abilities; and skills needed for direct interaction with others, not only diplomas and degrees. Specific training if it is an occupational certification/registration required for the job. Knowledge and Experience High school, plus a current Alberta journeyman Painter certificate Extensive experience including overseeing the work of a crew Knowledge of supervisory techniques, Collective Agreements, inventory control and project management techniques Knowledge of blueprints, work layout and general knowledge of repair work. Knowledge of Microsoft programs including Outlook, and Excel, maintenance management and electronic attendance systems. Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations and Legislation, regulations governing Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG). Knowledge of department and unit policies procedures, business and operations Abilities and Skills Strong leadership skills and the ability to train, coach and mentor staff Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently. Strong communication skills with the ability to relate well with other trades, school principals, teachers and general public. Fluency in the English Language with the ability to communicate verbally and in writing Good organizational skills and the ability to manage several projects Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and lift up to 30 kilograms A valid class 5 driver s license and the ability to travel to various sites within Edmonton. Ability to provide the school board with a clean driver s abstract upon hire and as requested. Possession of a full kit of recognized basic hand tools. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Describe the direction the job receives to perform the work and the type of review completed by the supervisor both during and upon completion of the task. The job works with minimal supervision once a project has been assigned.
