1 Registered Apprenticeship Programs Health Internship Program Pharmacy Assistant Program Green Certificate Discovery Program OFF-CAMPUS EDUCATION PROGRAMS Off-Campus Education Programs-Year Round Education Opportunities Off-campus education provides opportunities for high school students to explore and expand their career interests, skills and knowledge related to work and other life roles. Students work in paid jobs or unpaid (volunteer) jobs, where work-related activities take place outside the school classroom environment, subject to worksite approval by an Off Campus Teacher. Students can earn credits year round during weekends, after school, in the summer and during school breaks (i.e. semester breaks and exam periods, Christmas and Easter breaks). All students in any off-campus education program must complete HCS 3000, a workplace safety course and sign a work experience contract. Only hours worked between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm may be counted for credit. All worksites must be approved by an Off Campus Teacher and meet CSSD Standards. Registered Apprenticeship Programs (Summer and Year Round) Registered Apprenticeship is on-the-job training under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson who is a journeyman. Trades are regulated by the province of Alberta and there are over 50 compulsory and optional trade certifications. Alberta Trade Secrets has the complete list of all trades available and the steps required to become an apprentice. Students and employers report that apprenticeship has a number of advantages including: Hands-on, up-to-date training. Opportunities to earn while you learn. The promise of a good career. Students work in many areas and hold many apprentice positions such as cook, welder, mechanic, auto body technician, painter, electrician, refrigeration technician or plumber. There are over 40 trades where a student can start an apprenticeship. To enter the Registered Apprenticeship program: Students may arrange their own job and enter the RAP program immediately.

2 Students who cannot arrange a job may apply to Careers Next Generation where a placement may be found. Applications for RAP are taken year round and are available through your Off Campus Teacher. Careers Next Generation website is This program is promoted in the Spring of each school year. Meet with the off campus teacher-room B115. Register and complete HCS Students, parents, employers and the School Board sign a work experience contract. Student must register with the Alberta Apprenticeship Board and employer must consent to training the student as an apprentice. Hand in signed time sheets on a weekly basis. Eligible for up to 75 Credits, 35 Work Experience Credits and 40 RAP Credits. 40 RAP Credits can be used towards fulfilling your Alberta Diploma requirements. 20 WE credits can be used towards fulfilling your Alberta Diploma requirements. Registered Apprenticeship Credits Students can register in up to eight RAP courses in a trade. Alberta Education has assigned each trade a specific course number. A detailed listing of each trade credit is available at Each RAP course involves 125 hours of on-the-job learning and is worth 5 credits. A RAP student can earn as many as 1000-hours RAP credits (40 high school credits) toward an apprenticeship while still in school. These hours will count towards a student s time requirement for the apprenticeship board. Evaluation of Off Campus Students The Off-Campus Work Experience Teacher will visit the work site regularly to establish communication between all parties and monitor student progress. Evaluation is done by the Employer and the Work Experience Teacher. The number of evaluations will depend on the number of credits earned. Formal evaluations are usually completed after 125 working hours. Student Responsibilities A. Job Etiquette It is critical that the employer receive as much notice as possible about absences.
