1 EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Branch Librarian The Town of Georgina has an immediate opening for a Permanent, Full-Time Branch Librarian. Responsible for the general management and operations of the Sutton Library Branch, including assigned specific components of eservices functions. For full details on this position please see the job description which follows. Qualified candidates will have a Masters of Library and Information Science or equivalent from an ALA accredited library faculty, with specialized courses/experience in computer programming/applications; two years related experience in a supervisory capacity, preferably in a public library environment; thorough working knowledge of library procedures and practices, electronic databases, ebooks/readers, MSOffice applications, web maintenance tools and integrated library systems. Excellent communication, customer service, problem solving, planning, interpersonal, presentation and public speaking skills round out your qualifications. You have the flexibility to work on weekends and evenings as required, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel to other locations. Preference will be given to applicants with website development experience. This is a permanent, full-time position with 35 hours per week and an annual salary of $64,607 - $76,008. 2 JOB DESCRIPTION Title: Branch Librarian Position #: NU36 Department: Library Services Division: Date Created: April 2007 Revision March 2015 Date: Reports To: Director of Library Services/CEO Job Grade: 5 Direct Reports: Library Assistants, Library Clerks, Technician(s), Students, Circulation Coordinator (KE only) Indirect None Reports: Employee Management Group: (CUPE CUPE ; GPFFA; Non-Union; Management; Seasonal; Sessional; Temporary; Student) Position Summary Responsible for the general management and operations of the Library branch, including assigned specific components of eservices functions. Responsibilities Oversees the day to day operations of the library branch and programs including all eservices (i.e. website, OPAC, databases, other on-line services, other new technologies.) Supervises, oversees and/or directs the activities of branch staff including training, performance evaluation review, staff scheduling, health and safety, and provides recommendations on hiring/promotion/transfer and discipline/termination decisions. Provides training and support to staff on the use of the website, catalogue, other electronic services and new technologies. Informs all levels of staff of changes to the website, catalogue, and electronic services. Develops and delivers public training/awareness on Library electronic services. Provides Director of Library Services/CEO with written proposals and recommendations on programming/services, including digital programming/public training and new on-line resources and services initiatives. When approved, schedules and advertises the program(s), liaises with participants and other staff, sets up rooms/equipment as required, and evaluates the success of the program within the community. Responsible for initial troubleshooting on all library branch computers, working with computer & software vendors and/or IT support services as necessary; installs library software, including upgrades, as required; provides technical support pertaining to library projects to library staff and Town partners. Reviews catalogues, professional journals and other media and monitors usage for the selection and removal of materials in relevant subject areas, for the approval of the

3 Director of Library Services/CEO, and in compliance with the Board policy for Collection Development. Tracks, records and compiles branch, programming and computer-related statistics and reports monthly to the Director of Library Services/CEO. Creates pathfinders, displays and other promotional materials to support the library s services and relevant programming. Responds to general and reference enquiries and/or resolves complaints from the public, staff, Members of Council and Library Board. Attends circulation desk for the checking in and out of materials as necessary. Requisitions supplies, materials and equipment as necessary and makes recommendations to the Director of Library Services/CEO as required. Attends meetings, workshops, conferences and courses as required. Travels to other branches and outreach destinations (i.e. schools, Club 55, community partners) as required. Branch Librarians share responsibilities for eservices as assigned by the Director/CEO, including: o Providing leadership and/or training to staff in the regular maintenance and development of the Library s website/catalogue and implementation of transformative technologies such as IM, podcasting, wikis, blogs; o In conjunction with the Town s ITS division: maintaining inventory of library computers and equipment; developing hardware, software and networking budget; providing ongoing troubleshooting of library technology; o Software, including: public computer reservation/print management software; the ILS; OPAC; patron requests software; o Hardware, including: Self-check machines; 3-D printer; children s early literacy stations; projectors and peripherals; o Collection development and maintenance, including: ebooks/eaudio/evideos; database subscriptions; collection maintenance and evaluation software; o Website (development, maintenance); o Statistics; o Promotion, including: enewsletters; social media; o Other eservices tasks that may develop Ensures compliance of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable legislation as follows: o Implements best practice initiatives. o Takes every precaution reasonable for the protection of workers and property. o Recognizes, assesses and controls workplace hazards; implements and evaluates corrective actions; conducts risk assessments to minimize risk and liability. o Complies with the Town s Health and Safety Program and policies. o Provides ongoing health and safety training to staff and continually evaluates to

4 ensure due diligence. o Participates in ongoing training and development and ensures all training requirements are met and maintained. o Incorporates health and safety information into regularly scheduled staff meetings. o Researches and develops written standard operating procedures to advise workers of hazards and measures to be taken to protect workers as applicable. o Performs workplace inspections following the Corporation s schedule. o Conducts incident investigations and provides assistance and co-operation to the Joint Health and Safety Committee to carry out any of their functions as required. o Participates in the early and safe return to work process for both occupational and non-occupational claims. o Maintains current knowledge related to health and safety, industry practices, legislative changes and Ministry of Labour activities. o Commends worker health and safety performance. o Prepares reports and documents all health and safety activities and maintains records. o Appoints competent supervision. o Acts as a positive role model for health and safety in the workplace. Minimum Qualifications Education and Training: Masters of Library and Information Science or equivalent from an ALA accredited library faculty, with specialized courses/experience in computer programming/applications; Experience: Two years related experience in a supervisory capacity, preferably in a public library environment; One (1) year on the job for the period of adjustment, orientation, and adaptation. Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of library procedures and practices, electronic databases, ebooks/readers, MSOffice applications, web design development tools, and integrated library systems.
