During his apprenticeship, Liam is working in the manual turning and the deep hole boring department, learning specialised skills. He also produced a production plan for a selection piece that will be manufactured in the coming year. The plan included a great deal of detail, taking into account the health and safety involved in production. Richard Rhodes, Operations Manager for Energy Alloys, said: During his time in the turning cell he has proven that he has listened and learned by producing a piece of work which, in my opinion is first class for someone so new to engineering. I believe that by awarding him the apprentice of the month it will give a young man the encouragement to be a very successful player in this difficult industry. Liam has been an apprentice at the global provider since December 2012 and has excelled in his training thanks to the team. Liam said: My apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to push myself and conquer new challenges. The support available through the College and from the team is great and I really enjoy coming to work each day. What is an Apprenticeship? An apprentice is a great way to learn outside of the classroom, right in the heart of your dream career. Apprentices are employed by a business to do a specific job and be paid while you learn. Through working with the company and attending college, you will build up the experience, knowledge and skills that you can apply into your job while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. What is involved? You will be an employee of the company you are an apprentice with and will usually spend 4 days each week working in the business. The majority of training is done on the job with people who work in the industry, learning from experienced members of the team that can train you in all aspects of the practical work that you would require to do the job. You will also spent a further day in College where, through a structured programme, Rotherham College will provide you with further training to enhance your employability skills, such as English and maths. Rotherham College expect apprentices to be working in paid employment for a minimum of 30 hours per week. They will also earn a wage starting at the minimum of 2.68 per hour for year olds, but many apprentices do tend to earn more than this. What are the advantages of an Apprenticeship? You will learn on the job rather than being taught in a classroom You will be trained by people who do the job You will work with industry standard equipment and gain vital experience in the industry environment You will be paid while you learn You will get the real industry experience, working real working hours and learning the tricks of the trade After completing a Level 3 Apprenticeship, you could go onto Higher Education qualifications How long does it take? Apprenticeships vary, depending on the route the apprentice decides to take. Generally apprenticeships can take between one and two years to complete.
