12 A career in something that will never go out of style! Grossing over 26bn in income and employing around 800,000 people in the UK alone last year, the Fashion Industry is seen as a fast-paced sector, renowned for its glitz and glamour. If you are one of those cool creative types, a dedicated designer working on your own concepts, a future Cara Delevingne, David Gandy or Jourdan Dunn treading the catwalk or see yourself in the next five years buying apparel for a major retail outlet or maybe even working as a journalist spotting the latest trends that everyone will want to wear, then a course in Fashion at Selby College is the ideal choice for you. You will already be interested in what all the celebrities are wearing, no doubt describe yourself as a shopaholic and have an eye for what s in and what s definitely out! If you are the kind of person who likes to choose different outfits for yourself, your friends and family, if you love being creative and are passionate about fashion, then we will help develop your interest into a possible career, giving you the chance to work with different fabrics, colours and shapes. You will be able to produce your own design ideas and use mood boards and cloth swatches to determine the best material for your design. We will show you how to make your design, teaching you how to cut patterns and sew; eventually creating your design into something that can be modelled on the catwalk, at the college s annual Fashion show. If your love of Fashion comes only second to designing your own look, then this course will be the best choice you ever made... 10

36 WE FOUND OUR FUTURE AT THE SOAPBOX DERBY 34 For many young people there s no way they would consider getting involved in something educational outside of school hours, but one group of talented school pupils discovered that this can actually be quite fun. The Selby College Young Engineers Club was created to challenge pupils aged with an interest in Engineering, Science or Technology. It is an entirely voluntary group, so you don t have to attend if you don t want to. Students learn a variety of different skills from highly experienced Powerskills UK staff. Skills that this year, thanks to a sponsorship deal with local food manufacturer Greencore, saw them enter the Humber Bridge Soapbox Derby with their self-designed and built gravity racer. Selby College is celebrating the success of the club, who came 2nd in the Under-16 category. This was a great achievement for the youngsters, especially considering the fact that they had a crash situation on their hands during the second of their three runs! There were hundreds of spectators at the race and many were keen to find out how staff and students at Selby College had got involved in the event and also to ask questions about Powerskills and our range of Engineering courses. It was the second time that Lecturer Steve Cook had entered a college team, last year taking two junior teams who came away with 2nd and 3rd place in their group. Given the result the students got this year, no doubt the Soapbox Derby will become a regular fixture on the Powerskills calendar! FIND YOUR FUTURE AT SELBY COLLEGE Celebrating Success with Selby College Young Engineers Club Class of: 2015 Studied: Engineering Doing What? Fine-tuning gravity racers and entering more soapbox events
