2 2 Applied Engineering Graduates with real opportunities Challenger Institute s engineering training capitalises on its close liaison with industry to deliver a range of traineeships, apprenticeships, pre-apprenticeships, award courses and short-term courses. Working closely with key employers in the resources sector and design industry, Challenger ensures the skills and knowledge gained through these qualifications meet current engineering practice and workplace demands. Students qualify with sound theoretical knowledge and extensive practical experience to prepare them for jobs, both locally and throughout the world. Why us? Challenger s campuses boast some of the most comprehensive facilities for training in WA, with extensive workshops, sophisticated training equipment and highly experienced and qualified lecturing staff. Challenger s approach to para-professional engineering training has been hailed by the Engineers Australia Accreditation Board (EAAB) as innovative and of significant importance in helping to counter national skills shortages. In an Australian first, the Advanced Diploma of Engineering (Mechanical) has recently achieved full accreditation from Engineers Australia as a base qualification to practice in the occupational category of Engineering Associate. This is the first example of a para-professional training program, offered in Australia and implemented in accordance with the requirements of a national training package, to have achieved professional accreditation by Engineers Australia. Engineering training Competency is proven by completing practical assessments in the workplace, as well as by demonstrating an understanding of the relevant theory in a classroom and a simulated environment. Key features of engineering training include: Design and development of prototype equipment PLC technology material testing laboratory thermo dynamics laboratory fluid mechanics laboratory utilisation of industry software development of an engineering culture staff with industry and engineering backgrounds. Pathways to university On completion of a certificate IV or diploma, graduates can use their qualification to apply for entry to a wide range of courses at university. Qualifications at the diploma level or advanced diploma level may also provide credit of up to one year advanced standing in a three or four year degree. This can shorten university studies significantly and save students money. Challenger Institute has a diverse range of advanced standing agreements with both Curtin and Murdoch universities. 12 Eduardo University student treads his own path Mechanical engineering student Eduardo Walmsley knows there are several ways to get from A to B. Eduardo is a university student who spends his time finding varied pathways around mechanical problems, but even his educational pathway is testimony to this fact. Eduardo found that having passed high school maths and English, he was eligible to study a diploma of engineering, followed by an advanced diploma, at Challenger Institute. He could have used the qualification to become a para-professional in the industry but like a quarter of all Challenger Institute engineering students, he used it as a springboard into university. Curtin University not only allowed him to study engineering but also put him straight into second year in recognition of his Challenger credentials. The move means the formerly directionless high school student is now on track for a lucrative and prestigious career as a mechanical engineer. I d worked a series of odd jobs, from truck driving to labouring, before I determined that I wanted to study and achieve something more in my life, said Eduardo. Since starting at Challenger, I ve never looked back. Eduardo was Challenger s 2011 Student Achievement Award winner in Mechanical Engineering. THE WEST AUSTRALIAN Jessica Scholarships advance women s career paths A highly successful program to bolster the number of women entering the resources industry with rewarding careers has been expanded to embrace diploma and advanced diploma scholarships. The Women in Engineering program is delivered in partnership with industry sponsor Chevron Australia. The students receive scholarships that enable them to conduct their studies at Challenger Institute of Technology s worldclass oil and gas simulated plant facility at ACEPT. A key focus of the course is to provide the women with an insight into engineering from a female perspective and to address barriers that might discourage women from entering an engineering career. The entry-level six month Certificate III in Engineering (Technical) has been specifically designed to provide female candidates with skills and employment prospects through a supportive learning program. Previous course participants have come from a diverse range of ages and backgrounds. I was making progress in an Advanced Diploma in Contemporary Music when a relative alerted me to the course being offered at Challenger. I d entertained the idea of studying engineering at high school but it had seemed out of reach, explained Jessica Duchesne, who has progressed to the diploma course. But the fact engineering offers such fantastic employment possibilities, I decided to take up the challenge. Eventually I would like to enhance my qualifications by finishing an engineering degree.
