D OVE Workshop is a Community Education Centre based at the top of the Dulais Valley. We offer a wide variety of courses at all levels and opportunities for volunteering and work experience. We have excellent facilities at the centre including Wireless Internet Connection, a Computer Suite, Day Nursery, Café, a branch of the South Wales Miners Library and Catering and Conference facilities. 2 DOVE Workshop s inclusive learning programme Communities@Work is a first steps engagement programme. It has been designed to help those who need support to start a programme of learning. We believe that learning is a continuing aspect of everyday life and that it is important to provide accessible ways for people to take part, to share their skills and to develop new skills, experiences and understanding. Communities@Work is Open to all and provides support to people aged 16 and over. We particularly welcome those who are unemployed or economically inactive who want to take part, and gain new skills. If you would like to know more about this programme please come along and speak to one of our staff. Advice and Guidance If you are not sure which path to take in your learning or career come up and chat to our advisor who will also be happy to help with CV writing, interview skills, job search methods and other practical employability skills. We can arrange volunteering or work experience and find the right course for you. For more information or to book an appointment please ring Drop in IT Sessions Would you like help to send s? Would you like to learn more about using the WEB? We also offer support with CV writing, job search and applications. The Drop in IT sessions are FREE and are held every Tuesday morning from 9.30 am 1.00 pm. For more information please ring or Building Livelihoods and Strengthening Communities The Livelihoods Worker provides support to individuals, intensive support is provided in order for people to achieve a positive outcome in life. The Livelihoods Worker provides tailored support, working in partnership with people to identify their strengths and build on them. This service is FREE and available to anyone in the community.

It supports courses taught by the Department of Adult Continuing Education and is open to all. Banwen Library is open every Wednesday 9.30 am 3.00 pm or (South Wales Miners Library). Further details can be found at: P.C.Advisory Clinic Is at DOVE Workshop every Thursday run by a group of local volunteers for the benefit of our Communitys. Open Near You Open University in Wales Pathways Programme In partnership with DOVE Workshop the Open University in Wales will be running a series of FREE taster events over the coming year. This programme will give participants the opportunity to explore a range of subjects and find out more about what courses and support Open University in Wales has to offer. Dovecote Day Nursery We are a Care & Social Services Inspectorate for Wales registered bilingual Day Nursery for children aged birth five years old. The service is managed by fully qualified and experienced staff, who provide warm and consistent care in safe and stimulating surroundings. There is an outdoor play area, which is safe and secure. 4 Parenting Information Sessions These half day sessions will concentrate on topics relevant to family life and could include subjects such as: Paediatric First Aid, Nutrition and Vitamins, Prevention of Accidents in the Home/Fire Safety, Dental Health, Fussy Eaters, Child Development and Managing Difficult Behaviour. And more! Let us know your ideas. If transport and/or childcare are a problem we can help. Café Sarn Helen Café Sarn Helen is a modern and vibrant café that is open all year round. We have indoor seating for 64 people, and there is a large outdoor seating area and public garden. The café staff are friendly and welcoming and the food is excellent. We look forward to seeing you! Sarn Helen Preserves Café Sarn Helen now has a new range of preserves which are hand produced, full of flavour and made with fresh ingredients grown from our community garden (when in season). Learn how to operate the camera, connect it to a computer plus learn how to open Photoshop, import files, make basic adjustments and more.

Tai Chi (Level Entry,1,2,3) - 30 week course Day: Monday or Time: 6.00 pm 8.00 pm Tutor: Paul Baker Tuesday Tai Chi is an internal Chinese martial art practised for both its defence training and its health benefit. Entry Level: Anyone can join this course regardless of age or health conditions to help with aches and pains. It also helps to reduce stress levels and improve posture. Each module will require a completed piece of jewellery designed by you from start to finish. Pieces will be guided but you will have a choicer of beading, wirework, rope and knot work. Each week there will also be a taster session introducing you to enamelling, glasswork, hammering, soldering, fimo clay bead making and much more. Costs are covered for the taster sessions however you will be expected to fund the costs of your own personal projects.

Mosaics 10 week course Day: TBA Time: TBA Tutor: TBA Learn how to use a variety of materials, mosaic tiles, pebbles, slate, marble, glass, china etc. for making wall hangings, trivet stands, mirror frames, splash backs, paving slabs and more. Healthy Eating - 10 week course Day: TBA Time: TBA Tutor: TBA Would you like to learn more about healthy eating? This course incorporates information on nutrition whilst allowing you to make a healthy recipe every week. Food Safety 1 day Day: TBA Time: TBA Tutor: TBA The EDl Food Safety Award is an industry recognised qualification and has been developed with the Sector Skills Councils. Neath Port Talbot College Courses The FREE Return to Learn Service offers the chance to improve English and Maths Skills. The classes are taught in small friendly groups, where work is tailored to individual needs. Courses can range from the most basic level to full GCSE Level 2 equivalent. This course can act as a first stage back to into education, to improve employment prospects or simply to give parents the knowledge to support their children in school. 8 Workers Educational Association (WEA) Courses IT for the Terrified 8 week course Day: Monday Time: am 12 noon Tutor: Wayne Yare An introductory course on using computers. This beginners course focuses on using the Internet. The Internet has an immeasurable amount of resources that can be fun and very useful, we can save money in lots of ways from paying our bills on-line to shopping for best prices. This is a relaxed course that will help you improve your computer skills. You will not be terrified for very long! Introduction to Gardening 8 week course Day: Monday Time: am 12 noon Tutor: Graham Morris A course that is primarily aimed at those with little or no gardening skills, delivered in an informal and supportive environment. The course consists of a mixture of classroom sessions and some practical activities. Creative Gardening 8 week course Day: Monday Time: 1.00 pm 3.00 pm Tutor: Graham Morris This course will help you learn more about garden design. Find out how to make the best use of the space in your garden and where to find inspiration for your design. Understand about different garden styles and what to consider in creating planting scheme. Learn about the use of landscaping and garden accessories. Produce a basic plan and design brief for your garden. Rag Art Recycling 8 week course Day: TBA Time: TBA Tutor: TBA Create something out of old clothes and glue, recycle your rags into new rugs and bags. * This course is held in Crynant Community Centre *Art - 24 week course Day Wednesday Time: 1.30 pm 3.30 pm Tutor: Harriett Chapman This is an introductory course to painting and drawing, suitable for complete beginners as well as those with existing skills. You will learn how to use a wide variety of media. The course covers all aspects of drawing and painting in different mediums, etc

10 Swansea University BA (Hons) Humanities Part-time Degree Scheme (DACE) The part-time degree scheme offers an opportunity for those who would like to return to education. You can study for a BA Honours Degree in Humanities, and for those over 21 years of age, no formal qualifications are normally needed. Level One Courses Introduction to Psychology (2) 24 week course Day: Wednesday Time: 9.45 am am Lecturer: Rhian Worth This is an introduction to the subject of Psychology. This module will cover the history of and the major perspectives used in the field, e.g. the behavioural and biological perspectives. The module will examine the scientific nature of the subject and how psychology is used to explain topics such as attitudes, memories, language and thought. The Crusades 24 week course Day: Wednesday Time: pm 2.45 pm Lecturer: Colin James The module will study the causes and consequences of the Crusades from the end of the eleventh century to the close of the thirteenth century, and it will examine the state of the Latin, Greek and Muslim worlds in the period before the call for the First Crusade. The Crusades themselves will be studied together with a consideration of the religious, political, moral, financial and practical influences involved, and how the identity of the Crusade became altered from a military campaign with religious intention to a political method of dealing with matters that upset the Latin Church s conscionable comfort. Level Two and Three Courses Poverty, Charity and the Workhouse 24 week course Day: Wednesday Time: 9.45 am am Lecturer: Terry Davies This course examines the history of poverty and pauperism from the latesixteenth century to the emergence of the welfare state. It looks particularly at how central and local government and private individuals sought to ameliorate the worst effects of poverty. It also explores how the solutions arrived at were often based on contemporary perceptions of the deserving and the underserving poor. Key areas of discussion will be the deterrent role of the workhouse and the influence of the Charity Organisation Society on philanthropy in Britain.

11 Criminal Psychology 24 week course Day: Wednesday Time; pm 2.30 pm Lecturer: Carole Butler Over recent years the study of crime and the causes of crime has become increasingly significant within our society. This module examines crime from a psychological perspective and enables students to gain an insight into the fascinating field of Criminological Psychology. The syllabus consists of an examination of the causes of crime and criminal behaviour. It will investigate the relationship between psychology and the field of law enforcement, and will raise the question of whether crime can be predicted and prevented. Swansea University (DACE) Courses Foundation Certificate in IT (Beginners Level) 2 year course Day: Thursday Time: 9.30 am 2.00 pm Tutor: Simon Francis A unique one-day a week course that combines a high level of IT training with personal development, that encourages students to plan their future and the steps necessary to get there. Targeted at the unemployed and part time employed, the course fits in with school hours and there is a day nursery available at the centre. The course is suitable for beginners and will familiarise you with office software, i.e. Word Processing, Spreadsheets, File Management, PowerPoint Presentation, Internet and . A new module on establishing an e-presence, via Facebook or other social media will give you the skills to handle the marketing of a project or business idea. A personal development module will focus you on the job market, making sure you know how to use the available resources to good effect, send a good CV and consider all the available job options. Eligible students may qualify for funding over the 2 years of the course. H.E. Certificate (Level 1) Year 1 30 week course Day: Wednesday Time: 9.30 am 2.00 pm Tutor: Suzanne Russell Students need a good basic level of IT, familiarity with office software especially file management, to be able to move files from one location to another. Starting from Photo Editing the course builds skills in Video, Web Design, Communication and E-marketing. Teamwork is developed throughout giving you the practical skills and entrepreneurial mind set, to work creatively for an employer or yourself. Eligible students may qualify for funding over the 2 years of the course. H.E. Certificate (Level 1) Year 2 30 week course Day: Thursday Time: 2.30 pm 6.30 pm Tutor: Suzanne Russell Following on from Photo Editing the course builds skills in Planning and

12 Creating of Video, Introduction to Web Design and Publishing, employing industry standard software, Introduction to On-line Marketing including Social Media and Joomla the open source web design editor. Briefly looking at what makes people think and behave in the ways that they do. It will further explore two specific areas in more depth: Child Psychology and Criminal Psychology. 13 Sylfaen Dwys 2 (Foundation Level Welsh Course year 2) 30 week course Day: Wednesday Time: 1.00 pm 3.00 pm Tutor: Helen Evans Students on this course have already completed the Entry Level Welsh Course plus 30 Units of the Foundation Level Welsh Course. New members, who already have some basic knowledge of Welsh, are welcome to join us to complete the final 30 units. Amongst the topics covered are family, work and hobbies. Take the A 4109 to Onllwyn, go straight through the traffic lights at Glynneath and follow the mountain road until you come to a crossroads, which is signposted to DOVE Workshop. Turn left into Dyffryn Cellwen. Carry on straight through Roman Road and take the second turning on the left between the row of terraced houses. DOVE Workshop is the single storey building immediately in front of you. From Ammanford Direction Take the A 4068 from Brynamman, then the A4067 to Abercraf. Turn right for the A 4221 to Dyffryn Cellwen. Turn right at the second crossroads into Dyffryn Cellwen, which is signposted to DOVE Workshop. Carry on straight through Roman Road and take the second turning on the left between the row of terraced houses. DOVE Workshop is the single storey building immediately in front of you.
