The technology industry is one of the world s largest, dynamic and ever growing business sectors. It provides some of the most rewarding challenges and opportunities for an individual throughout their career. Furthermore, there is an increasing demand for technology professionals who are trained to the highest levels and who can work with businesses to implement technological solutions to create competitive advantage. Taking this programme will put you at the forefront of developments in the local technology industry. The Foundation degree has been designed in partnership with Plymouth University and leaders in the technology industry in Jersey. The programme will focus on; establishing critical understanding of technology strategies for business, developing industry recognised knowledge and skills to implement new technology solutions for business, producing a culture of innovation and creativity that exploits technology for competitive advantage. The programme will encourage learning and development in a way that is practical and applied, using the experience and expertise of local IT professionals. This approach provides an underpinning theoretical understanding of the subject and the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills within a business environment. During the Foundation degree, students will spend a significant period of time working for an organisation performing a technology related role. As part of the initial work placement phase, students will be given the opportunity to apply for a range of roles offered by supporting organisations and will need to secure a work placement through a formal interview process. BSc (Hons) Information Technology for Business This one year programme has been designed in partnership with Plymouth University and leaders in the technology industry in Jersey. It builds on the knowledge and skills gained during the Foundation degree and provides students with a pathway to achieving a full BSc (Hons) degree in technology. It is a challenging and informative programme of study that develops a sound knowledge of key aspects of the technology industry. It has a strong emphasis on research, analysis and problem solving and will provide students with the opportunity to explore theory and apply skills to technology challenges within a business context. The BSc (Hons) degree sets out to prepare graduates for a successful career in the technology industry, enabling them to make a significant contribution to the long-term development and success of their organisations and fully contribute to society at large. 2

In the Plymouth University Partner Colleges Undergraduate Student Perception survey, 100% of first year students stated that they found staff are good at explaining things ; 100% of students were satisfied with the quality of the course, and over 90% agreed that the course has helped me to present myself with confidence. Our core team are all experienced teachers with over 40 years experience between them. We also draw on a pool of experienced visiting lecturers from the Island s technology industry. Crucially, we insist that anyone delivering a module on any of our courses has a nationally recognised teaching qualification, ensuring the highest standards of achievement and academic integrity. Ongoing support We recognise that at higher education level, students are on a journey toward full independence and this is reflected in the large amount of support which is delivered in the first year, gradually being reduced as students develop their skills as independent learners. We believe in small class sizes, prioritising quality over the sheep-dip approach favoured by some institutions. Students also have the support of a personal tutor, a work-based learning tutor and, of course, their mentor in the placement organisation. Varied teaching methods Teaching is via a variety of methods from traditional lectures and seminars to small group challenges, including participation in organised events to apply theory to practice. Teaching and assessment is linked to the work placement, allowing students to apply and embed what they have learned in the classroom. Higher education students have access to their own study space as well as the college library and Learning Resources Centre. Students also have access to electronic resources and learning support material through Plymouth University s web-based student portal. 3

4 The University Centre at Highlands Experienced mentors You will be allocated an experienced work mentor who will guide you through your work placement whilst out in industry. The role of the mentor is to ensure that you are provided with guidance, support and feedback to enable you to develop and apply theory learned in the classroom within a real-life business environment. For the BSc (Hons) Information Technology for Business programme you will engage and liaise with clients in the technology sector through a consultancy module and the honours project. Creative assessment tools Recognising that learners are all different, we assess students using a range of methods from business reports and academic essays, to group and individual presentations and practical case studies. This helps students to develop their academic skills, as well as developing the soft skills that our partner organisations tell us that they expect when hiring graduates. Importantly, the learning log that students keep during their extensive work placement forms a critical part of the overall assessment. Students are encouraged to engage in dialogue, with their mentor and those around them at work, to reflect on and learn from this unrivalled experience. Practical assessments A distinctive feature of the Information Technology for Business degrees is the emphasis on developing knowledge and skills central to the role of the aspiring IT professional. All modules have embedded practical assessments to complement the strong vocational focus of the degree programmes and to give the student the opportunity to deal with real-life issues and projects, including regular work placements. 4

5 FdSc Syllabus Professional Practice This module is designed to prepare students for studying at degree level and develop the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment within the technology industry. Systems, Services and Support Students explore the importance of technology as a strategic organisational resource and the best practices used to align technology solutions to meet businesses objectives. Fundamentals of Networks This module investigates the core concepts and technologies that enable the operation of networking technologies within a business environment. Software Development Students apply the core concepts and techniques relating to good software development practice. Business Information Systems This module develops an understanding of the uses of information within a business environment. It explores how businesses operate and how they deploy technology to support their business objectives. Business Relationship Management Students examine how a business manages the range of internal and external relationships to achieve competitive advantage. Network Management This module explores the core concepts and techniques for managing network services. Students learn how to manage users and technology resources as well as how to evaluate appropriate security measures and implement solutions to maintain an operational business environment. Business Analysis and Design Students analyse the opportunities, limitations and major issues surrounding modern business information systems and learn how good information systems design can aid the realisation of business objectives. Network Applications Deployment This module examines how businesses manage the implementation and running of the systems and processes which underpin their operations. Students cover the concepts, tools and approaches needed to implement technology solutions to solve business problems. IT Project Management Students learn how to specify, plan, manage, test and review the implementation of technology projects within a business environment. Web Applications Students investigate the development of web technologies, understand their impact upon business environments and apply techniques for developing web applications. BSc (Hons) Syllabus Honours Project The IT Honours project enables students to undertake a major project with the aim of solving a significant technology related business problem and to apply a wide range of the theoretical and practical topics covered within the programme. Consultancy & Professionalism Students investigate the importance of professionalism within the technology sector and consider the ethical and legal responsibilities that an IT professional faces within their practice. They will explore the approaches needed to build effective relationships with a client, understand the contractual frameworks in which consultants operate and the methods and techniques used to provide effective consultancy services to business. Strategic Information Management This module explores information management strategies within the technology sector; examining the role of technology in the strategic planning process and how technology can create competitive advantage through effective implementation. Leading People: Achieving Objectives in the Technology Sector The role of leadership is examined in relation to the social, cultural and psychological processes at the individual, team and organisational level, with a focus on the approaches that have been applied in the technology sector. Information Security Management This module examines the threats and vulnerabilities to information systems and identifies how, through effective information security management, they can be removed or at least minimised. 5

Primary objectives Underpinning this strategy are five primary objectives: To maintain the University s position as the Island s leading institution for student employability. To improve the overall quality of graduates first employment destinations as evidenced by our success in relation to students gaining jobs with their placement provider. To incorporate employability-related skills and training activities across all academic disciplines and other relevant areas. To establish and maintain high quality, fully coordinated links with leading local graduate recruiters. The University aims to achieve these objectives by:- Continuing to embed higher-level, subject-specific, intellectual and transferable skills within the academic curriculum. Increasing and enhancing opportunities for workrelated learning. Preparing students for employment in a global economy. Recording personal development. Developing employability attributes A set of core attributes are routinely outlined by employers as indicators of their needs and as ciphers of graduateness. These relate to world of work behavioural practices, such as reliability, good timekeeping, confidence and complex problemsolving, and, no less importantly, to soft skills such as communication, teamworking ability, the capacity to operate independently and to demonstrate contextual sensitivity, including intercultural awareness. Recognition of the value of these attributes, and of their pertinence to HE learning within and outside the curriculum, underpins the ambitions of the University s Employability Strategy. We have a proven track record in students securing employment in a related job role on graduation. 6

7 Application Process Admissions The minimum entry requirement is 160 UCAS points from two A Levels or equivalent (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma) or 27 International Baccalaureate points plus GCSE Maths and English at grade C. At least one A level should be a STEM subject (e.g. Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths). Other Level 3 qualifications will be considered and mature applicants with relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis. All candidates will need to have a successful interview. You will also need to demonstrate a clean police record check for your work placement. Cost 6,500 (these are subject to change each academic year). How to apply All applicants are required to complete an application form and submit a personal statement. A specific task relevant to the course applied for will also be set which will be discussed at the interview stage.
