2 2 Earn while you learn Have you considered studying for a degree on a part-time basis? Why not gain valuable experience by volunteering or working part-time in an educational setting? The Department of Childhood Studies at Canterbury Christ Church University offers a range of part-time study opportunities for people who want to gain a qualification whilst continuing to work. Tuition fees for part-time programmes are half the cost of a full-time degree and student loans are available to cover these costs. 4 4 University Diploma Supporting Children s Learning The University Diploma has been designed as a professional qualification and consists of 60 credits at Level 4. You can apply for a part time student loan from for this programme (Fees: 2250) Who is the programme suitable for? This programme is suitable for any adult working in an educational or child care setting; we attract students from a variety of different social and cultural backgrounds and many are people who may never have considered doing a degree course at University. Some of our students are volunteers in schools; some are making a career change, whilst others have come straight from school. This programme therefore provides an opportunity for those who are engaged in work with children and young people to enhance their professional understanding and knowledge through academic study and professional reflection on experience. The programme you will follow is based on an integrated work and study pattern which combines academic and vocational learning. Whatever the education experience, the University can support you through your studies and progression opportunities are available. Once you have achieved 60 credits at Level 4, you can progress to the Foundation degree in Childhood Studies. Alternatively, we can advise you about your future career and employability prospects. Start date, location and duration There are flexible start dates and locations according to employer choice. Duration is a minimum of 6 months or a maximum of 12months. A viable cohort of 18 students is required.

5 What will be studied? Three Level 4 modules (20 credits each) will be chosen for you by an employer from a wide selection of modules. Some example modules are: Growth and Development Language Development and its Place in Learning Practical Mathematics Practical Science and Technology Behaviour for Learning Understanding Education and Childcare Independent Project Mentoring in the Workplace The Emotional Experience of Learning Introduction to Research Methods Accessing Higher Education at Canterbury Christ Church University The Evolving Role of the Teaching Assistant Additional Educational Needs. Entry Requirements The entry requirements for this programme are: GCSE at grade C (or equivalent) in English Language; A level (or equivalent) or be expected to obtain this qualification prior to the start of the programme; You should be employed (paid or voluntary capacity) working with children or young people in an educational setting for at least 10 hours per week Experience of working for 6 months (or an equivalent time) either in a paid or in a voluntary capacity, prior to entry, with children or young people in an educational setting Have active support of an employer, who must sign the application form and the learning agreement. What if students do not meet the entry requirements? If students do not meet the A level or equivalent qualification, but have the appropriate work experience, they may be offered an opportunity to join the programme, subject to the agreement of their employer. In this case they will be required to take and pass the Orientation Course. This is a 20 hour programme held during a school holiday and assessed on a pass/ fail basis. If students do not have a qualification equivalent to a GCSE in English they will be required to take and pass the University s Equivalency Test. This consists of a 2 hour written paper. 6 6 Foundation Degree Childhood Studies The Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies consists of 120 credits at Level 4 and 120 credits at Level 5. You can apply for a part time student loan from for this programme (Fees: 4500) Who is the programme suitable for? This part-time foundation degree is an innovative two year, work-based programme which enables you to gain a qualification whilst continuing to work. It has been specifically designed for people who are working as an unqualified teacher, a learning support assistant or an adult other than a teacher in a school or similar educational setting. Start date, location and duration Courses are delivered at a range of locations, including: Canterbury, Broadstairs, Medway, Maidstone (with Mid Kent College) and Upminster. The next main intakes of cohorts will be in September 2014 What will be studied? You will study 12 modules (6 each year). Each module consists of five teaching days or the equivalent number of hours delivered in twilight and occasional Saturday sessions and is supported by work-based tasks. In each year there is a core module that all students will study and the remaining modules relate to one of the specialist pathways: Year 1 Introduction to Childhood Studies (Core) Growth and Development Language Development and its Place in Learning Behaviour for Learning Practical Science and Technology Practical Mathematics.

7 Year 2 Theories of Learning (Core) Language and Literacy Learning Mathematics Independent Study Creative, Cultural and Social Development Children, Science, Technology and Society. Specialist pathways Generic Programme English as an Additional Language (EAL) Mathematics Modern Foreign Languages Special Educational Needs (SEN). I truly never believed that I would be attending a University and enjoying a degree course. So many people I knew said that I would not be able to cope with working and being a single parent of 4 along with studying. It has not only been easy, but with the amazing encouragement, support and help from the tutors, I am nearly at the end of the course. 8 8 Foundation Degree Physical Education and Physical Activity The Foundation Degree in Physical Education and Physical Activity consists of 120 credits at Level 4 and 120 credits at Level 5. You can apply for a part time student loan from for this programme (Fees: 4500) Who is the programme suitable for? This part-time foundation degree (FD PEPA) is an innovative work-based programme which enables students to gain a qualification whilst continuing to work. It has been specifically designed for teaching assistants and people who are, or would like to be, involved with physical education, physical activity, sports and coaching in mainstream or special schools, afterschool clubs, holiday schemes and clubs for children and young people or similar settings. Start date, location and duration Courses start in September and January each year (subject to a viable cohort) and run during term time (Sept-July). The FD PEPA is offered at our Canterbury Campus and other locations in Kent and London. The course lasts two years and on successful completion, progression to a one year part-time BA programme is available. What will be studied? You will study 12 modules (6 each year). You will attend 30 day sessions at your course venue per academic year; and you will be expected to spend 10 hours at the workplace during the university term time. Typically, each module consists of 10 sessions and during your day session at university you will study one module in the morning and another in the afternoon session. You will study the following six modules in each year: Year 1 Introduction to Physical Education and Physical Activity Teaching and Coaching across the Curriculum Fundamental Movement and Activity for Physical Development Learning in Physical Education and School Sport

9 Foundations of Sport and Physical Activity for Health Leading and Managing Physical Education and School Sport Year 2 Pedagogical Models for Games Pedagogical Models for Physical Activity and Health Assessment in Physical Education and School Sport Inclusion and Adapted Physical Activities Coaching in School and the Community Physical Education and School Sport Project The course includes practical performance across a series of modules. The award of the ASA Certificate for Teaching School Swimming KS1-2 is embedded in one of the modules and you will also have access to many other teaching and coaching awards. Entry Requirements The entry requirements for this programme are: GCSE at grade C (or equivalent) in English Language; A level 3 qualification (e.g. A Level, BTEC National or equivalent) or be expected to obtain this qualification prior to the start of the programme; As this is a work-based programme, you need to be employed (paid or voluntary capacity) in a school, club or a similar setting for a minimum of 10 hours per week. The learning agreement is part of the Fd PEPA application and needs to be signed by the head of school, head coach, director or manager; Experience of working for 6 months (or an equivalent time) either in a paid or in a voluntary capacity, prior to entry, in a physical education, physical activity or sports setting. What if students do not meet the entry requirements? If students do not meet the level 3 qualification (A level, BTEC National or equivalent), but have the appropriate work experience, they may be offered an opportunity to join the programme, subject to the agreement of their employer. In this case they will be required to take and pass the Orientation Course. This is a 20 hour programme usually offered during the Kent mid-term and other school holidays and is assessed on a pass/fail basis. If students do not have a qualification equivalent to a GCSE in English they will be required to take and pass the University s Equivalency Test. This consists of a 2 hour written paper Find out more and apply: Progression opportunities after the Foundation Degree There are currently two progression routes offered by the Department of Childhood Studies: BA (Hons) Childhood Studies BA (Hons) Learning and Teaching These programmes allow students who have successfully achieved the Foundation Degree to achieve a full honours degree. Both routes are offered as part-time day release or twilight evening attendance. The BA Learning and Teaching is also offered as a full-time route. Both top-up routes are offered at Medway and Canterbury. You can apply for a part time student loan from for these programmes. (Fees: 4500) Studying on the courses Both programmes offer participants an opportunity to reflect on a range of issues that affect the development of children and young people. There is an emphasis on the role of research and its impact on aspects of children and young people s lives. Both routes offer the opportunity to engage in practical research. A range of assessment tools (including essays, presentations and poster presentations) are employed. There is no formal examination on either programme. 10 10 BA (Hons) Childhood Studies Who is the programme suitable for? Those who have achieved 240 credits from the Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies or a similar programme. Those students who study the SEN specialism are able to continue to a BA in this specialism. Start date, location and duration This programme normally follows the end of the Foundation Degree and is offered at Canterbury, Broadstairs and Medway. It is normally completed in one calendar year and on successful completion, progression is available to a variety of postgraduate routes. What will be studied? You will study 5 modules over the course of one year. Each module consists of five teaching days or the equivalent number of hours delivered in twilight and occasional Saturday sessions and is supported by work-based tasks. The five modules are: Work-based Enquiry Methods Research Informed Practice Contemporary Childhood Issues Factors Affecting Learners & Learning Independent Enquiry (40 credits) Entry Requirements In addition to relevant credits at Foundation Degree level, students will need to be employed or volunteer in a child/youth related setting for 10 hours or more per week and have the agreement of the setting to participate in the programme. 11 BA (Hons) Learning and Teaching Who is the programme suitable for? This programme has no employment requirement and would suit anybody with 240 relevant credits who wishes to follow an academic route to a full honours degree. Start date, location and duration This programme follows the end of the Foundation Degree and is offered at Canterbury, Broadstairs and Medway. It is normally completed in one calendar year and on successful completion, progression is available to a variety of postgraduate routes. The full-time option involves one day per week attendance at university and the part-time route is evening attendance one day per week and the occasional Saturday. For both the full-time and part-time routes there is a requirement to attend a writing workshop during the February half term. What will be studied? You will study 3 modules over the course of one year: Enquiry Methods in Learning and Teaching Contexts (40 Credits) Contemporary Issues in Learning and Teaching (40 Credits) Independent Enquiry Project (40 credits) Entry Requirements Relevant credits at HE Levels 4 and 5.
