2 ABOUT SEDA SEDA is an education provider that exists to engage, educate and empower young people as they transition from school to employment or further study. The program was established in 2006 to meet the needs of young people whose education preference is for an applied and context relevant learning experience. SEDA is registered with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) as a non-school senior secondary provider. SEDA engages students in their education by connecting their passion with a hands-on learning environment. Students complete their senior secondary qualification and gain nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications. SEDA works with the strengths of each young person to develop their self-confidence and self-worth through positive learning experiences. This provides all students with the opportunity to develop key life skills, including organisation, independence and teamwork, which see them prepared for the real world. The result is mature, resilient and capable young men and women who, on completing their secondary education, are empowered with a range of pathway choices, be it further study or employment. Over 2000 students are currently completing their education with SEDA in Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. MISSION: SEDA exists to engage, educate and empower young people. ABOUT BUILDERS ACADEMY AUSTRALIA Builders Academy Australia (National Provider Number: 21583) is a Registered Training Organisation that delivers nationally recognised qualifications at more than 30 locations across Melbourne and regional Victoria. An initiative of the Simonds Group, Builders Academy Australia was originally intended as a means to train Simonds staff. It was founded on the theory that better qualified staff will lead to better quality homes. This proved correct and today Simonds is Australia s second largest domestic home builder and the largest in Victoria. The opportunities offered to Simonds employees through Builders Academy Australia are now available to everyone, especially young people looking to begin a career in building and construction. Courses currently offered at Builders Academy Australia are focused on but not limited to building and construction and construction pathways in the areas of bricklaying, carpentry, painting and decorating, wall and floor tiling, solid plastering and stonemasonry. EDUCATIONAL PATHWAY The Simonds Building and Trade Program curriculum is designed to fit within the framework of the Victorian education system. Students enrol in nationally recognised qualifications through Builders Academy Australia. The curriculum is designed to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and qualities they will need to succeed in an increasingly competitive job market. The overarching theme across the program is 5 Star Apprentices for 5 Star Employers. SEDA and Builders Academy Australia will harness their collective capability and bring together their industry and community partners, in a sharing of knowledge, resources and expertise. Trade-specific and industry-wise Structured Work Placements, site visits and guest speakers are part of a curriculum which develops students knowledge and understanding of work and the apprenticeship system. DOING THE HARD YARDS (HEALTH LITERACY) This module fosters young peoples capacity to perform at work through the development of habits that build the health, well-being and physical capacity necessary to support a happy, healthy and productive personal and work life. Students will have the opportunity to develop a fitness and gym program and participate in practical exercise and sport sessions as they prepare to be physically fit for physical work. 4

4 PROGRAM OVERVIEW DESIGN AND BUILD (TRADE LITERACY) Design and build is a significant aspect of the curriculum. Students will build something for themselves, make items for others in the community and complete a building structure using a range of trade skills including carpentry, wall and floor tiling, plastering and bricklaying. 21st century thinking about sustainable building and design is fundamental to the curriculum. This includes an examination of five-star rating systems and sustainability issues in the building and construction industry more generally. BUDGET OR BUST (FINANCIAL LITERACY) This area of study design provides opportunities for students to develop money management skills, understand borrowing and credit and learn how to structure a personal budget. The Budget or Bust area of study is a job retention strategy with a focus on long-term financial goals and aspirations, designed to inspire young people to build a prosperous future. THAT S A SMART BUSINESS (BUSINESS LITERACY) This module focuses on the workings of business including starting and running a small business. Students will work through scenarios and think about business issues and problems from the employers perspective. The relationship between time, money, productivity and profitability will be explored. OUT AND ABOUT (SOCIAL LITERACY) Out and About is an important module for growing and developing students as local and global citizens, providing opportunities for personal growth and development particularly in the areas of communication, problem solving and managing challenges. Students will be involved in community and school partnerships undertaking activities such as: building, making or repairing work, running donation campaigns such as Full Tank Breakfast and Lunch Project, Tool Box Project, Flat-Pack Recycle and Bookshelf Project. 6
