1 Kenmare Adult Education Centre Business, Administration and Marketing ( ) Major Award (FETAC Level 6)
2 INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THIS COURSE? There are a total of 8 subjects in this course and all are business related. (I credit per subject with a total of 8 credits required for the major award) You will find a brief description of each subject in this pack. A few of the subjects have short exams; assessed work to be done both at home and in class. (This might include exam revision and/or research to complete an assignment) We do realise that many people will have other commitments in their lives outside of this course, but we need to have an 80% minimum attendance rate for every subject. If you have to miss a class, you must inform your tutors and arrange to catch up with what you have missed. Tutors in turn will make every effort to stick to the timetable that is set at the start, and if they are unable to be there, will arrange for another tutor to take their class. HOW DO I APPLY? There are a limited number of places available on this course (maximum 15), and as it is expensive to run in terms of resources and finances for the Centre it is important that we get people that really want to complete the course. Selection is by means of an Interview to be held on Tuesday 24 th July 2012 at the Kenmare Adult Education Centre (we will let you know whether you were successful within 1 week of the interview) Postal Address; Kenmare Adult Education centre, Bell Height, Kenmare, Co. Kerry. We need an up to date C.V. plus a completed application form. (included in pack) ENTRY REQUIREMENTS? AS this is a FETAC Level 6 programme it is important that anybody considering doing the course is aware of the standard at which it is delivered. Therefore, FETAC Level 5, the Leaving Certificate (or its equilivant) is the preferred entry requirement. However, for those who do not have the preferred entry level qualification but can demonstrate their abilities and interest, in the application process will also be accepted. (We are looking to people to demonstrate their ability to successfully complete the course; an IT skills assessment will be required where people cannot immediately demonstrate good IT skills)
3 HOW IS THE COURSE STRUCTURED? The course will begin on Tuesday 18 th September 2012 and finish on the 17 th May (subject to sufficient numbers) Classes will start at 9.30 am and finish at 1.45 pm, with a short 15 minute tea break and will be from Monday to Thursday (there may be study support sessions if needed at a time/day to be arranged) As far as possible we will not have classes during school holidays, mid-term breaks etc but just occasionally we might need to. All classes will take place in the Centre. IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT OF WORK WILL THERE BE ANY FUN? There is a lot of work in this course. However, Tutors will work as a team to make sure that all students are managing their work well. If support is needed it will be possible to put some Study Support system in place. We will keep you up to date at all times with what is happening on the course and in the Centre and want you to feel that this is your course. WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS? This course is designed as a stepping stone to Higher Education as well as giving people the opportunity to attain high level business skills. We have included in this pack some information on the progression routes to the various Higher Education establishments. If you have any questions about this do let us know. Kerry Education Service has an Education Guidance Service for students should they require information on a specific programme/course. WHAT IF I AM CLAIMING SOCIAL WELFARE BENEFITS? We understand from the Department of Social Protection that doing this course will not affect peoples current benefits. However, we do advise you to check this out yourself before you commit to the course. On the Application Form we ask you to let us know if you are currently in receipt of any form of payment as this is a key target criteria for the Department of Education and Skills. This programme is being run under the Department of Education and Skills Back to Education Initiative Programme (BTEI) which means that it will be free to those in receipt of any form of payment from the Department of Social Protection, those that have a Medical Card or those that have not completed their Leaving Certificate (or equilivant). Those that are in Employment and have their Leaving Certificate may have to pay (it is important, however, to contact the centre if you are not sure whether, or not, you may have to pay as each person s circumstance differ) All students who will be doing the course will be asked to pay 50 to cover the cost of tea/coffee, printing, folders etc.
