14 Public Holidays in Spain Did you know? Los Sanfermines, the bullfighting fiesta. The city of Pamplona is world famous thanks to its San Fermín fiestas. Thousands of people come every year to experience the risk and excitement of the popular running of the bulls, immortalised by Ernest Hemingway in his novel Fiesta. San Fermín starts on 6th July at midday. At that moment the chupinazo is launched from the balcony of the town hall. It is a rocket that marks the official start of the fiesta, causing an outburst of joy amidst the crowd gathered in the square. The first running of the bulls is held the following day: at 8am the doors of the Santo Domingo corral are opened, and hundreds of people run in front of the bulls on their route through the old town to the bullring. One of the most exciting moments happens a few minutes before the start of the running of the bulls, when runners entrust themselves to San Fermín, singing three times in front of a small statue on Cuesta de Santo Domingo Street. For nine days, Pamplona residents and visitors, dressed typically in red and white, get carried away by the continuous festive spirit that invades the streets. Furthermore, every morning during the fiestas there is a parade of giants and big-heads through the centre of the city, for the children to enjoy. The festive programme also includes open-air celebrations, concerts, dance exhibitions and, of course, bullfights. San Fermín finishes on 14th July at midnight, when the crowds make their way to the Town Hall Square and, with candles alight, sing Pobre de mí, to bid farewell to the fiesta until the following year. 16 Seville Airport Moorish heritage and business city Gastronomy Gastronomy in Seville is as rich as it is diverse: old recipes that has been passing through generations, mixing traditional and modern cooking. In Seville there are excellent national and international food restaurants, but it is the tapeo the real brand mark of Seville s gastronomy. If the visitor wants to really get to know this brand mark, he or she will need to taste the wide variety of tapas available in bars and taverns. Fried fish, here known as pescaíto frito, is almost an obligation, specially anchovies, puntillitas, and marinated dogfish. The Tapeo is not limited to eating and drinking, but it is more of a social activity, which protocol has been strictly described by the experts: you need to harmonize Gastronomy Seville April Fair the different flavors into an intensity scale and during a certain period of time. Flamenco Flamenco is the most pure expression of the Andalusian soul. Its origins, still unknown, are related to the gypsies arrival to Seville and Cadiz fields in the 15th century. Among other theories, it is believed that they came from a North Indian region called Sid, actually part of Pakistan, from where left due to from some wars or maybe foreign invasions. In the middle of the 19th century, it became popular through the cafes known as cafés cantantes. The first one opened in Seville around Flamenco is a complex concept, with several variables and difficult to attach to a unique social or ethnic group. In Seville, visitors can enjoy daily flamenco shows thanks to the direct heirs of the cafés cantantes : the tablaos flamencos. There are shows in the different old neighborhoods and in small town festivals. Exhibition Zurbarán Female Saints From May 3 to July 31, 2013 the Espacio Santa Clara is hosting the exhibition Zurbarán Female Saints, devotion and Page persuasion. This exhibition tries to make the best of both, the meaning and the function of the Zurbarán work during the 17th century, and the latest work of the leading Spanish fashion designers who has been influenced by Zurbarán or even consider Zurbarán the first Spanish designer. It is aimed to create a new format combining dance, music and theatre with arts performed in two times. Guadalquivir river [Source: Tourspain and Turismo Sevilla] 16
