2 SIS40512 CERTIFICATE IV IN SPORT COACHING DESCRIPTION This qualification reflects the role of individuals who apply the skills and knowledge to pursue a career as a coach. Likely functions for someone with this qualification include observing the performance of athletes to determine the required level of instruction, and planning, conducting and evaluating individualised and team training programs. Those with this qualification would supervise training and provide in competition assistance to athletes including supporting their psychological preparation and conducting post competition analysis of both performance and strategy. They would also be responsible for athlete support needs in conjunction with other personnel. Those with this qualification may also be responsible for the output of others and undertake broader business functions including long and short term planning. 4 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Academic Level: First Aid Qualification and CPR certificate Minimum age of 16. Language Proficiency: English proficiency is essential and IELTS score may not be required if applicant possesses GCE N or O Level from a recognised institution where English was the sole medium of instruction. GCE N LEVEL ENGLISH = Applicant must obtain a minimum of at least 50% and above. GCE O LEVEL ENGLISH - Applicant must obtain at least a minimum Grade of D7. Students that don t possess GCE N or O Level from a recognised institution, will require a minimum score of IELTS 4.0 in both speaking and writing components. 6 UNITS DESCRIPTIONS BSBRSK401A Identify risk and apply risk management processes This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify risks and to apply established risk management processes to a subset of an organisation or project's operations that are within the person's own work responsibilities and area of operation. BSBWOR404B Develop work priorities This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to plan one's own work schedules, to monitor and to obtain feedback on work performance and development. It also addresses the requirement to take responsibility for one's own career planning and professional development. SISSSCO303 Plan and deliver coaching programs This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop and deliver sports coaching programs. The unit focuses on the application of planning and organisational skills to determine developmental activities and delivery methods according to sports participants needs. This unit applies to those conducting coaching activities in a variety of sport contexts including schools and clubs. SISSSCO304 Customise coaching for athletes with specific needs This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to customise coaching practices for athletes with specific needs. This unit applies to those operating as a coach from regional, to international level working with athletes with particular needs such as those from culturally linguistic and diverse backgrounds, elite juniors or mature aged athletes. This also covers athletes with a disability. SISSSCO306 Provide drugs in sport information This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to provide information about performance enhancing and prohibited drugs to athletes and implement strategies to assist athletes to effectively address those issues according to legislative and sport-specific regulations. This unit applies to those working autonomously and within supervisory roles in a sport and recreation environment. It applies to personnel who are responsible for coaching athletes in a sport-specific training or competition setting. This includes providing in competition assistance to athletes and supporting their psychological preparation. It also applies to those in roles such as sport development officers and competition managers or coordinators. SISSSCO307 Provide nutrition information to athletes This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to enable coaches to provide information to support their athletes to apply the principles and practices of nutrition to achieve peak performance in the relevant sporting activity. This unit applies to those working autonomously and within supervisory roles in a sport and recreation environment. It applies to personnel who are responsible for coaching athletes in a sport-specific training or competition setting. 5

7 SISSSCO308 Support athletes to adopt principles of sport psychology This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to enable coaches to support their athletes to apply the principles of sports psychology to their specific sporting activity. It focuses on assisting athletes to implement and evaluate psychological approaches to optimise their sporting performance. This unit applies to those working autonomously and within supervisory roles in a sport and recreation environment. It applies to personnel who are responsible for coaching athletes in a sport-specific training or competition setting. SISSSCO409 Work collaboratively with support personnel This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to consult with others to develop and maintain an effective working relationship in relation to sporting activities or competition. This unit applies to personnel who coach or train athletes in a sport-specific training or competition setting at an intermediate level. SISXCCS402A Coordinate client service activities This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to coordinate client service activities. The unit focuses on the application of service standards to maintain and improve the level of service activities provided to clients. Coordinators may have staff (paid or volunteer) involved in delivering customer service and are responsible for the quality of their work. This unit applies to personnel working in a range of roles in community recreation, fitness, outdoor recreation and sport. It applies to individuals working in customer-service roles in gyms, aquatic centres, community centres or indoor activity centres, as well as to those working as instructors, trainers or guides and volunteers in indoor and outdoor settings with a range of client groups. SISXCCS404A Address client needs This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage ongoing and sometimes complex relationships with clients. The unit focuses on exploring with the client which possible outcomes best promote client satisfaction. The unit requires the learner to be familiar with service-provision options that can be negotiated with the client and customised to meet the client s needs. This unit applies to those working in a client service-delivery role in sport, recreation or fitness sectors, such as community recreation, outdoor recreation and sport. It applies to those working in roles such as program developers and coordinators, competition organisers, trip leaders, after-school or holiday-care coordinators, logistics coordinators and sports trainers in work environments such as community recreation centres, fitness venues, aquatics centres and camps. The unit requires the learner to be familiar with service-provision options that can be negotiated with the client and customised to meet the client s needs. 6

8 SISXIND405A Conduct projects This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to prepare for and conduct projects in specific activity areas, It also involves undertaking contingency planning to enable the achievement of project outcomes. This unit applies to those working autonomously and within supervisory roles in a sport, fitness and recreation environment, including those in roles such as recreation officers, program managers, logistics coordinators, sports trainers, coaches, development officers, personal trainers and outdoor leaders. These roles may be performed in a wide range of sport, fitness and recreation environments. The unit focuses on the application of project management skills and the requirement to meet time lines, quality standards, legislative obligations, budgetary limits and other requirements set for the project. SISXIND408 Select and use technology for sport, fitness and recreation This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assess, use and evaluate technology relevant to work in the sport, fitness and recreation industry. The unit focuses on the ability to source and comprehend technical information and acquire skills in technology use. This unit applies to a range of individuals working in the sport, fitness and recreation industry who require an essential and broad knowledge of technology to support their activities. This unit applies to individuals working within any sector, in any location and for any sport, fitness and recreation organisation, but is of particular relevance to those with a focus on performance enhancement. SISXIND410 Coordinate sport, fitness or recreation work teams or groups This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to coordinate work teams or groups in a sport, fitness and recreation environment. It involves monitoring and organising staffing levels, informing team or group members of expected standards of work, motivating the team and maintaining staffing records. Group or team members may be paid employees or volunteers. This unit requires the team or group coordinator to consistently and responsibly apply organisational policy and procedures and local statutory requirements in regard to the induction, rostering, coordination, coaching and motivation of work teams or groups. It requires strong interpersonal communication skills. Those with managerial or supervisory responsibility undertake this role. SISXWHS402 Implement and monitor work health and safety policies This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to implement work health and safety policies, procedures and programs within the context of an established organisational work health and safety system. This unit applies to employees in a sport, fitness and recreation environment with supervisory responsibilities, in roles such as team leaders, coordinators, supervisors, program and facility managers. These job roles may be undertaken in a range of environments such as leisure centres, sporting venues, fitness centres, and indoor activity centres or as part of outdoor recreation activities. 7

9 SITXCOM401 Manage conflict This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to resolve complex or escalated complaints and disputes with internal and external customers and colleagues. It requires the ability to use effective conflict resolution techniques and communication skills to manage conflict and develop solutions. It does not cover formal negotiation, counselling or mediation. SISSSWM302A Plan a program for a competitive swimmer This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to plan a training program for a competitive swimmer. It focuses on the skills needed to develop a program which meets the needs of individual or groups of swimmers and involves planning for competitive swimming situations. This unit applies to coaches and or performance development officers working with individuals or teams of competitive swimmers. This includes planning individualised programs to improve the performance of swimmers while maintaining their wellbeing. SISFFIT305A Apply anatomy and physiology principles in a fitness context This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply an understanding of human body structure and systems and terminology as they relate to exercise instruction. It applies to fitness professionals who may operate with some level of autonomy or under limited supervision and incorporates the self directed application of knowledge and skills. This unit requires the exercise instructor to demonstrate during exercise delivery the application of an understanding of body structure and systems and terminology as they apply to identifying and analysing client needs, exercise selection and modification. SISSSCO101 Develop and update knowledge of coaching practices This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop and update information on coaching, including the legal and ethical issues that must be considered by coaches. The unit focuses on the ability to source and comprehend general principles of coaching as well as National Sporting Organisation (NSO) sport specific requirements and covers the initial and ongoing development of a person's required knowledge base. It does not cover the technical requirements related to coaching in particular sport, these skills are covered in other units. This information underpins effective performance as a coach. This unit describes a key function for all people who require an essential knowledge of coaching general principles to support work activities. This unit applies to individuals who undertake entry level coaching roles in any sport in any location. It is particularly relevant for those wishing to operate as a community coach. 8

10 SISSSCO410 Implement a talent identification program This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge to implement and evaluate a talent identification system for athletes. It focuses on identifying and developing potential athletes to perform at elite competition level in the relevant sport. This unit applies to those working in a coaching role in a specific training and or competition setting at from regional to international level and whose role would include identifying and developing athletes in specific sports. SISSSCO513 Plan and implement high performance training and recovery programs This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to apply sportspecific knowledge to implement a high-performance training program designed to refine the skills and performance of individuals participating at a high level. This unit applies to coaches working with individuals or teams at a minimum of state representative level. SISSSPT303A Conduct basic warm-up and cool-down programs This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge to implement basic warm up and cool down programs incorporating stretching to assist athletes to prepare for activity and also aid in post activity recovery. This unit applies to those working in a sport and recreation environment at a local, state or national level. It applies to personnel providing sports trainer support in a sport setting such as on the playing field, court, change rooms, open or enclosed areas at sporting events, accommodation venues or in transit, with a responsibility for providing programs to assist with pre-activity preparation and post-activity recovery for athletes. SISSSTC402A Develop strength and conditioning programs This unit describes the performance outcomes, knowledge and skills required to develop, implement and evaluate a strength and conditioning program. It focuses on the skills needed to develop a program which meets the needs of individual athletes or groups of athletes according to their sport-specific needs or those undertaking fitness programs to achieve personal fitness goals. This unit applies to coaches working with individuals or teams. It also applies to fitness instructors who provide a range of fitness programs and services to individuals or groups. The unit is applicable to those working with sporting groups, in fitness centres, gyms or autonomously in the fitness industry. 9

11 DELIVERY METHODS Training for the course will be delivered using one or more of the following methods: Classroom: - Theory - Practical ASSESSMENT METHODS Assessment methods can include one or more of the following: Questions and answers Panel of workplace presenters/personal trainers Simulation Role plays Written and/or oral examinations Projects and case studies Observation Third party report Practical demonstration and assessment CREDIT TRANSFER The organisation recognises Australian Qualification framework qualifications and statements of attainment which are issued by any other Registered Training Organisation. Students may be entitled to a credit transfer in the following circumstances: Completed units of competency from a relevant National Training Package. Approved units of competency from a National Training Product. Successful RPL application RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL is a process where a candidate may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience and/or formal training.
