1 Career options: ing Careers and Employment Service This degree program has a strong multidisciplinary focus and emphasises the development of innovative technologies, strategies and solutions to environmental issues to ensure a sustainable future. It deals with planning, design, implementation and management of the environmental engineering aspects involved with the quality of land, air and water. This broad- based program integrates many aspects of environmental sciences (eg natural, political, social and economic) with engineering principles and practices applicable to environmental issues, such as waste management, site rehabilitation, wastewater treatment and reuse, air quality control, environmental impact assessment, environmental monitoring, and environmental management systems. Communication skills are emphasised, enabling you to interact with a wide range of professional and community groups, government and non- government organisations, and industry. You will be trained to work in multidisciplinary teams. Environmental engineers from this program will have strong multidisciplinary skills and be able to: manage natural resources for a sustainable future; research and develop new technologies and techniques to improve the environmental acceptability of engineering projects and solve environmental problems; evaluate the environmental and social impacts of engineering projects in association with scientists and other professionals; design and operate processes to treat various wastes to exacting standards, acceptable for discharge/ recycling/reuse; work with other engineers and professionals to minimise the generation of wastes; work with occupational health experts to ensure a safe working environment; design and manage the rehabilitation of contaminated sites; and produce outcomes that are both sustainable and acceptable to society. In addition to knowledge and skills directly related to your program of study, you will also develop a range of other skills (e.g. teamwork, analytical, communication) through academic study, employment, voluntary work, sporting activities and life experience.
