1 POSITION DESCRIPTION: SECTION A: Position purpose Position title Senior Lecturer in Clinical Technologies Position Number Classification Organisational Unit Department Academic Level C Higher Education Faculty of Health, Arts and Design School of Health Sciences Department of Health and Medical Sciences Effective date March 2016 POSITION PURPOSE: The primary focus of the Senior Lecturer in Clinical Technologies is to lead a strand of research in a specialist area of Biomedical Science, convene and teach undergraduate and/or postgraduate units, coordinate academic programs and supervise research students. The incumbent will be responsible for contributing to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching effort of the Faculty in the School of Health Sciences. This may involve a range of delivery modes; - Online facilitation of units - Extensive blended delivery of lectures and tutorials for on campus students The incumbent will be expected to carry out educational and curriculum development of both online and on campus learning materials and assessments. In addition, the appointee will facilitate the overall coordination of units, and majors within degree programs, including teaching and marking assessments. The incumbent will be actively involved in the supervision of honours and postgraduate research students. The incumbent will be expected to function as a member of both discipline-based and interdisciplinary teams in order to help the faculty to achieve its objectives. The incumbent will be expected to carry out appropriate activities that will maintain and develop their scholarly, research and/or professional expertise. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION The Faculty of Health, Arts and Design will drive Swinburne s 2020 aspirations to increase the University s teaching and research activities in health and education. These sectors are recognised growth areas in Victoria and Swinburne has a strategic imperative to connect with this growth through this new faculty. The Faculty also encompasses well-established scholarship, teaching and highly renowned research in the fields of Psychology, Social Sciences, Design, Media and Communication. The alignment between health, arts and design builds on existing links between these disciplines to enable development of exciting, new programs in Allied Health and Education areas. The faculty will focus on key areas such as psychological sciences, statistics, biomedical and health science, film and animation, media, education, communication, digital media design, interior architecture and industrial design. The faculty comprises of three schools: The School of Health Sciences; The School of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities; and The School of Design. In addition, the faculty houses the Brain and Psychological Sciences Centre, the Centre for Human Psychopharmacology, the Swinburne Institute for Social Research and the Swinburne Design Factory. School of Health Sciences The School of Health Sciences currently employs approximately 90 tenured and fixed term academic and research staff. It currently educates close to 4000 students in undergraduate (on campus and online), postgraduate and PhD programs. Our research is interdisciplinary working with fields such as design, forensic behavioural science, clinical medicine, neuroscience, business, social sciences, aged care, public policy, sports science, environmental health and radiation science. The School is expanding its undergraduate and postgraduate courses across different disciplines, including in the Health Professions such as Occupational Therapy and Nursing. PARTICIPATION ON COMMITTEES: The participant will attend the Department meetings and participate at other meetings and committees as required. 3 LOCATION: This position is currently located at the Hawthorn campus but the incumbent may be required to undertake duties at any of the University's campuses. Thus the incumbent must be willing to travel between campuses and work at a range of locations. SECTION B: Key responsibility areas The key responsibility areas (KRAs) are the major outputs for which the position is responsible, not a comprehensive statement of the position activities. Key responsibility areas 1. LEARNING AND TEACHING Independently contribute to the development and implementation of effective learning and teaching practices within the University at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Preparation and delivery of tutorials, lectures and seminars, project coordination, marking, assessment and consultation with students. Adopt and develop unit/ course material. Contribute to course/degree design and coordination. Maintain the quality of the programs through program review and to meet industry/organisational needs, educational requirements and quality standards. Investigate and develop alternative teaching methods and the initiation and development of new material. Co-ordinate the timely delivery of programs. Provide academic counselling and advice to students. Develop a network of contacts to support and contribute to the delivery and development of the programs. Actively participate in the further development, coordination and delivery of units and courses conducted by the discipline. 2. RESEARCH Initiate, lead and contribute to the research activities and output of the Faculty, both individually and as a member of a team: Prepare or contribute to the preparation of refereed journal publications, conference and seminar papers arising from the research. Write papers; develop funding applications and proposals as appropriate. 3. STUDENT SUPERVISION 4. STUDENT SUPPORT & WELFARE Provide advice to and supervise honours and postgraduate research students in the appointee s area of expertise. Promote and support all aspects of student welfare and support initiatives to improve completion rates and student outcomes. 5. ADMINISTRATION Undertake administrative tasks/assignments using business and communication technologies: Maintain, develop and update administrative tools and resources to assist in/ and or coordinate the delivery of courses, programs and research, and to contribute to the effective management of units. Record and provide information to associated staff, students and stakeholders in accordance with policy and procedure. Prioritise work to achieve faculty s objectives as allocated in work planning processes.

Assist with the management of sessional teaching staff. Contribute to the achievement of project outcomes: Assist in the development of strategies to coordinate and implement projects Assist in the development of high quality submissions, proposals, tenders or expressions of interest to secure project funding. Coordinate projects, including the development of project plans, project completion and the implementation of project outcomes. Assist in the identification, negotiation and management of project resource requirements. Undertake research, analysis, report writing and publishing. 8. OHS Promote a safety culture by complying with all occupational health and safety instructions, policies and procedures including departmental safety manuals Complete the online OH&S induction including biennial refresher Report hazards/incidents to manager/supervisor and take action to avoid, eliminate or minimise hazards Seek information or advice where necessary before carrying out new or unfamiliar work Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures and comply with instructions given by emergency response personnel 9. Qualifications: Include all educational and training qualifications, licences, and professional registration or accreditation, criminal record checks etc. required for the position. 1. A doctoral qualification in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, applied physics or a related discipline. / 2. Membership of an appropriate professional body 3. Tertiary teaching qualification or equivalent. Experience/Knowledge/Attributes: Required by the incumbent to successfully perform the positions key responsibilities. 4. Advanced knowledge in one or more areas of clinical or medical technologies, including medical/health technology and data acquisition, instrumentation, biomedical electronics (e.g. smart and nano devices) and ultrasound and other medical imaging technologies. /
5 5. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain links with hospitals, business, community and industry (medical equipment/development). 6. Demonstrated high standard of interpersonal and communication skills including resourcefulness, initiative and the ability to meet tight deadlines, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment. 7. Demonstrated experience in tertiary teaching including a record of co-ordination, teaching and curriculum development. 8. Demonstrated experience in the design and manufacture of monitoring devices. 9. Demonstrated capacity to contribute to management of course and program delivery. 10. A track record of publications in clinical or medical technologies, a capacity to communicate research outcomes, and a demonstrated commitment to ongoing research activities within the field. 11. Ability to plan and conduct research within a broader overall team environment, to identify complementary expertise and initiate appropriate collaborations. 12. Demonstrated capacity to supervise research postgraduate students. 13. A high degree of organisational and administrative skills. 14. Demonstrated creation of leading edge/best practice education, including flexible delivery formats and/or simulations in the learning environment.
